Mrs. J. R. SLEDGE
Mrs. Annie Sledge, 76, died at 10:20 a.m. Monday at her home, 829 Texas St., following an illness of many months.
Mrs. Sledge, daughter of the late D. C. [sic] and Jane Bateman, was born June 5, 1877, in Fort Worth, Texas. She received her education in Texas. She was married to J. R. Sledge, who survives her, on March 2, 1901, in Fort Worth. For the past 12 years Mrs. Sledge had made her home in Pine Bluff.
Mrs. Sledge was a member of the South Side Baptist church, a member of the Lydia Bible Class, the W.M.U. and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, J. R. Sledge, two daughters, Mrs. E. A. Reinhardt, Emporia, Virginia, and Mrs. J. D. Williams, Pine Bluff, Ark., one son, C. E. Melton, Sr., of Alexandria, La., one brother, D. C. Bateman, Fort Worth, Tex., eleven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Lloyd Sparkman, pastor of the South Side Baptist church, and Rev. Spencer Johnson, were held at 2 o'clock today from the South Side Baptist church. Burial was in Graceland cemetery, South Funeral Home in charge.
Active pall bearers were: W. D. Merritt, Bill Kaufman, B. C. McGehee, Buster Eavins, W. C. Brassell, Garland Vaughn, Mike Sann, V. A. Norwood and A. L. Dodgers. [1]
