  1. 1.  Hiram Randolph Achenbach was born on 05 Dec 1844 in Clearfield County, PA (son of George A. Achenbach and Catharine Kleckner); died on 29 Aug 1934 in Wichita, Sedgwick County, KS; was buried in Topeka Cemetery, Topeka, Shawnee County, KS.

    Notes:

    H. R. ACHENBACH, R. R. Agent and Postmaster, Farmington; one of the most genial and popular gentlemen on the line of the Central Branch. He is a native of Pennsylvania, and was born in Clinton County, December 5, 1844. He was reared and educated in his native State, graduating from the People's Commercial College at Reading. After leaving this college, he clerked in the Prothonotary and Register and Recorder's office at Lock Haven, Clinton Co., Pa. Then he went to Williamsport, where he was engaged in the confectionery and bakery business with his brother. His father, Hon. George A. Achenbach, is one of the leading citizens of Clinton County, and for a number of years has been prominently identified officially. We clip from the sketch-book of legislatures of Pennsylvania, in 1876, the following: "George A. Achenbach, Representative from Clinton County, is a gentleman of reputation on the Democratic side of the House. He was born in Columbia County, October 22, 1815, before the birth of the common schools, consequently was educated in the subscription schools, which were in vogue at that day. At twelve years of age he became a clerk in a store. In 1836, he moved to Sugar Valley, then in Center, but now in Clinton County, where he engaged in managing the mercantile interests of a furnace company. In 1860, he was elected to the Legislature from Clinton and Lycoming Counties, serving his constituents so satisfactorily that he was returned by a large majority. He was a Delegate to the Constitutional Convention, serving on some important committees. Mr. A. is very unassuming at his post of duty, and is emphatically a business legislator. He is a man stout built, but not corpulent, with gray hair, large head, and closely shaven face, his countenance indicating good nature. " H. R. resided in Pennsylvania until 1877, when he came West, arriving in Atchison County, July 6. He at once engaged in merchandising. In that capacity he was identified until the summer of 1881. During that time he took up the study of telegraphy, and was appointed railroad agent October 27, 1880. He had received his appointment as Postmaster, October 24, 1877. In both capacities he is eminently qualified, and without the radiant countenance of "Auchy," at the station, Farmington would have but few attractions. He was married June 24, 1869, to Miss Annie F. Ayers, a native of Chester County, Pa., an estimable lady. They have had four children - Mary E., Preston A., Harry S., and James P. Mr. A. is an Odd-Fellow, and in 1876 was District Deputy of Clinton County, Pa., organizing Salona Lodge, No. 937, June 24, 1876. He is also Master Mason.

    Notes:

From Family Memorial of John Phillip Achenbach and Descendants in the United States, by Sarah Jane Kline Houtz,
Biography of John Achenbach by A. Houtz, Pastor.
John Achenbach was born in Plainfield Township, Northampton County, Pa., on the 15th day of April, 1784, and was the third son of John Phillip Achenbach. On the 15th day of May, 1805 he and Miss Elizabeth Fehr were united in holy wedlock. This union was blessed with twelve children.
About 1812 Mr. Achenbach and his brother Philip, with their families and their widowed mother moved to Briar Creek Township, Columbia County. Here he was engaged for a number of years in farming. While residing in the valley his aged mother died and was buried in the Briar Creek graveyard. About the year 1850 Mr. Achenbach disposed of his farm and moved to Orangeville. During a brief period of about two years he was associated in the village with Mr. C. S. Rickets in the mercantile business. He then purchased a farm near Orangeville, located on Fishing Creek, and again resumed the peaceful occupation of a tiller of the soil. Becoming aged, he quit this occupation in 1863 and subsequently lived a retired life at Orangeville.
Mr. Achenbach was a man of medium size and was stout. He walked with a firm step and was soldierly and dignified in his bearing. He inherited from his father, who was evidently a merchant, good business qualities. He was considered a good accountant, a good manager and a reliable man. When he made an engagement of any kind, he could be depended upon. He maintained the reputation of being a man of his word.
The social qualities of father Achenbach were good. Being naturally sociable, he had many friends. The hospitality of his home was known near and far, and was shared by many. Much credit should also be given to his amiable wife and to "Aunt Sara," who always tried to make it pleasant to those who tarried under their domestic roof. The latch-string always handing out, many, perhaps too many, took advantage of the kind invitation. As kind words and deeds cannot die, so the kindness of this generous man and his family shall live in the memory of those who shared their hospitality.
Early in youth he received catechetical instruction and was received by confirmation into full membership of the Reformed Church at Plainfield. He was loyal to his church and became an active worker in it. He served on various committees of church work and for years filled the offices of deacon and elder. He was also sent several times as a delegate to the annual meeting of classes. The pastor always found in father Achenbach a good counselor and a hearty supporter in all worthy church enterprises.
In the year 1863 it was his privilege and pleasure to attend the centennial of the Plainfield congregation. In attending this joyous celebration he was accompanied by his two daughters, Mrs. Rebecca Kline and Miss Sara Achenbach. He was one of a very few who survived its early history, and we can well imagine what mingled joy and sorrow flooded his soul as he called up the memories of the past.
Mr. Achenbach was a man of strong religious conviction. He firmly stood by his church, and was unshaken in his confidence in God and his Savior.
Being possessed with a sound body and mind, he lived to a good old age and was gathered to his people. He lived a life of usefulness; he generously ministered to the necessities of others, and with a calm and trustful heart he waited the coming of his Lord. He, too, is now sharing the hospitality of our Father's Heaven. Farewell, departed sire. We hope to meet thee in the fellowship of Heaven.

    Notes:

    By Mary Elizabeth Kline Moyer
Elizabeth F. Fehr Achenbach, wife of John Achenbach, was the daughter of John and Eva Geist Fehr, and was born at Tinicum, Bucks County, Pa., and was one of nine children. Her brothers were Peter, George, John and Michael. Her sisters were Polly Bowman, Catherine Wright, Eva Yohe and Eliza Mohn. How the memory of Grandmother Achenbach, as she was familiarly called by everyone, clings to us, and how pleasant the recollections. It seemed to us, her grandchildren, as we so often visited her in her home, that her purity and gentleness were unequalled, and how often we have wished her mantel like Elijah of old could have fallen upon us, and that we could wear it with the same dignity and grace. She was the mother of twelve children, two of whom still live. Truly they could “rise up and call her blessed.” Her kindly greetings and smiling face, combined with her wit and humor, which was so ready, made her a friend to all within reach.
Man dies and the world moves on, and although appearances indicate the dead as forgotten, it is nevertheless, not the case of her who shared the toils and cares of her husband in pioneer times, and lived to the good old age of 88 years.
