John Nevin “Poppy” Masteller, 89, son of the late Ray and Emma Masteller of Bloomsburg, passed to his eternal reward Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, at Sandpiper Rehab/Nursing Center in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

Born May 8, 1925, in Bloomsburg, he is survived by his sister, Gloria Pollitt of Hamilton Square, N.J.; two daughters: Bonnie Rothrock (Lynn) of Indian Land, S.C., and Vicky Becker (Robert) of Johns Island, S.C.; his son Brad Masteller (Marjorie) of Johns Island, S.C., and his niece, Linda O’Reilly (Patrick) of Kensington, Md. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Dr. Heather Dowlin (Alex) of Charlotte, N.C.; Marissa Marx (John) of Chester Springs, Pa.; Adam Becker and Amanda Rone (Nick), both of Johns Island, S.C. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren: Reese and Kinley Dowlin, Tessa Marx and Taylor Rone; and great-nieces Emma and Megan O’Reilly. In addition, he is survived by many dear extended family members.

John was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife Audrey, whom he affectionately called “Spunky.”

Upon graduation from Bloomsburg High School in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps (radio gunner), serving from 1943 to 1946, and saw extensive duty in the European theater during World War II. After returning from the war, he enrolled at Temple University, graduating with a degree in Business Administration, and married Audrey Jean Vincent of Danville on Sept. 11, 1948.

After a long career in personnel management, John and Audrey retired to South Carolina to be closer to their children. He and Audrey supported various animal charities and gave a loving home to a number of stray/abandoned cats over the years.

A huge sports fan, John played basketball in high school, the armed forces and at Temple University. He was also an avid fan of all Penn State sports.

There will be no public visitation. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to God’s Grace Canine Rescue, 3128 Eastwood Drive, Charlotte, NC 28205, c/o Michalle Caylor, or to a no-kill animal shelter of your choice.
