    James "Don" Brandon, 90, of Hot Springs Village died on Wednesday January 15, 2014 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Don was born September 26, 1923 to the late Howard and Mattie Gritton Brandon in Augusta, Kansas.
    Don served in both the United States Navy and Coast Guard. He was a master pilot flying jets, helicopters, seaplanes and even gliders, both private and commercial. His flying skills have allowed many unforgettable adventures for him and his family.
    Don was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers; Howard T. Jr and Robert Brandon. He is survived by his loving wife of Sixty-Three years; one son and daughter-in-law of Tulsa, OK; two daughters and sons-in-law of OK; and four grandchildren.
    Funeral Services were held at Good Samaritan Chapel on Saturday, Jan 18, 2014, Pastor Jim Burns officiated, Burial followed at CedarVale Cemetery.
    In Lieu of flowers, you may make donations in his honor to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research at Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, New York, New York, 10163-4777.

    Services Held Tuesday For Howard T. Brandon
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the Fisher funeral home in Dallas City, for Howard Taylor Brandon, 70, of Niota, who died at 9:25 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, 1966, at the Veterans Administration hospital, Iowa City, Ia., where he had been a patient for two weeks. He had been in failing health for 12 years.
    Miss Mary Hutson, lay pastor of the Nauvoo Presbyterian church, officiated, and burial was in the Industry, Ill. cemetery.
    Anita Gerhadt, organist, accompanied Connie Ferrill and Shirley Ferrill, who sang "In the Garden" and "Wonderful Place."
    Pallbearers were Joh, Melvin, Jack and Glen Rea, Richard Brandon and William Boyer.
    Mr. Brandon, son of William H. and Jessie Taylor Brandon, was born in McDonough county, Ill., on July 19, 1896. He was a veteran of World War I, serving as a private in the 475th Aero Squadron, Company 7, 163rd DB. He entered the service Aug. 13, 1917, at Billings, Mont., and received his discharge at Des Moines, Ia., on Dec. 27, 1918.
    He was a machine operator by trade. He was married in June 1919, at Madison, Mo., to Mattie Gritton, who died in 1931.
    He is survived by the following children: Robert; James, Midwest City, Okla; Howard Jr., New York City, N.Y.: Brady, Houston, Tex.; Pfc. Connie, U.W. Army, Ft. Hood, Tex.; Gary, Galesburg, Ill.; and Mrs. Joyce Zahn, Chicago; two brothers, Earl Brandon of Ferris, Ill, and Valasco Brandon, Dallas City; two sisters, Mrs. Forrest Greeling, Macomb, Ill., and Mrs. Helen Rea, Niota; and nine grandchildren.

    Charles Gritton Dead.
    Chas. Gritton, aged 57 years, two months and 15 days, died at his home near Tulip Saturday, October 12th and was laid to rest in the cemetery at that place October 14th. Mr. Gritton had been in poor health for some time and the end was not unexpected. He was a good man and a fine neighbor and his loss will be keenly felt by his neighbors and his large circle of friends. The family have our sincere sympathy in their great loss.

    Mrs. Charles Gritton Died Wednesday
    Mrs. Charles Gritton, life-long resident of this community, died Wednesday morning, July 24, at 6:40 o'clock, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Larry McBride of north of Centralia, after a few days' illness. She was 83 years of age.
    Mr. Gritton was born Georgie Dry in Monroe County, north of Centralia, April 21, 1846, and spent her entire life in that vicinity. She was married to Charles Gritton, who preceded her in death by several years.
    Surviving relatives are three sons and four daughter and they are Finn Gritton of Oklahoma, Mrs. Tom Akers of Long Beach, Calif., Earl Gritton of Centralia, Frank Gritton of Madison, Mrs. Larry McBride, Mrs. Ernest Ball, and Mrs. Homer Alexander of north of Centralia. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. I.G. Noel of Centralia and Mrs. Aaron Hulen of Slater.
    Mrs. Gritton was a member of the church at Tulip and was known by her many friends as a fine Christian mother.
    Funeral rites will be conducted Friday afternoon at 1:30 at Tulip Church by Elder Egan Herndon. Burial will be made in the city cemetery.

    Several researchers give Merritt's parents as William Gritton and Jane Lipsey. However, William Gritton (husband of Jane Lipsey) died in 1823, and there is no record of a second marriage for her. And those same researchers give Merrit's birth date as 8 Jan 1828. There is obviously a problem with those dates.
