204 | Bynum C. Fletcher Bynum C. Fletcher, 71, former manager of the New Main theater here, died in Veterans hospital, Indianapolis, at 8 p.m. Wednesday. He had been hospitalized several times, the last time a month. He lived here at 805 South street. Born at Indianapolis, he was manager of the New Main theater 14 years before his retirement three years ago. He came to Lafayette from Kokomo where he was a theater manager. 205 | C. Umbanhowar, former B 4 chairman dies. Indianapolis, Ind. - C. E. Umbanhowar, Big Four general chairman from 1922 to 1942, died here Nov. 28. Vice-President W.E.B. Chase represented President W. F. Kennedy at the funeral Dec 1. In a wire of condolence to Mrs. Umbanhowar at the family resident, 1929 Pennsylvania Ave. North Indianapolis, President W. P. Kennedy said: "As a friend of Brother Umbanhowar of long standing, I share your sorrow in your bereavement. On behalf of all officers and members of the BRT whom he served so long and faithfully, I extend sincere sympathy." Umbanhowar, a former president of Lodge 699, joined the BRT in 1913, and held membership in Lodges 374 and 289 before transferring to Lodge 699, of which he was a member at the time of his death. He held a 40-year membership pin. He served as deputy president at various times since 1947, and was a delegate to the BRT Convention of 1950. 209 | Carol A. Young Gritten, 67, of Williamsport, died at 9:05 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, in the Seton Specialty Hospital, Lafayette. She had been ill since January. Born in Attica on May 20, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Lewis M. Jr. and Pauline M. Karlson Young. She was raised in Attica, graduated from Attica High School in 1958 and had lived in Williamsport for several years. She married Laban E. "Jim" Gritten on Dec. 18, 1959, in Williamsport. He died June 1, 2003. Mrs. Gritten was a homemaker and formerly attended the Baptist Church in Attica. She enjoyed riding four-wheelers and fishing. She was a sports fan and followed Indiana University basketball and the Indianapolis Colts. Surviving are a son, Randy Lee Gritten of Williamsport; a stepson, Sam Gritten (wife: Sharon) of Attica; three sisters, Patricia Young of Williamsport, Joni Baker (husband: Randy) of Attica and Betty Jo Young of Brazil, Ind.; three brothers, John Young and James Young (wife: Janet), both of Attica, and Richard Young (wife: Goyita) of Crawfordsville. 210 | Carol Mae DeMoss, 75, of Princeton and formerly of Danville, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2015, at Liberty Village in Princeton, Illinois. Carol was born on Dec. 6, 1939 in Boston, Massachusetts to Roger and Phyllis (Easton) Feldman. She grew up in Boston, and her family then moved to California where she finished high school. Carol met the love of her life, William DeMoss in Norwalk, California and the two were married on Aug. 2, 1957. They later moved back to Danville where they would raise their family. Carol leaves behind her four children, Don (Susan) DeMoss, Edward “Ed” (Cindy) DeMoss, Roger (Cindy) DeMoss and Jennie Dale; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and her brother, Bill Feldman. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; a son, Michael DeMoss; a brother, Roger Feldman and a sister, Janet Foley. Carol was a homemaker, and enjoyed raising her four children and cooking. She was well known for her fudge and homemade dinner rolls. She also was a great quilter. After losing William in 1987, Carol returned to school and graduated from Eastern with a bachelor’s degree in library science and a minor in psychology. Carolyn was born on Nov. 21, 1935 in Catlin to Charles and Mable (Hopkins) Decker. Carolyn married Glenn "Stumpy" Hall on Oct. 23, 1954 and the two shared 50 wonderful years together before his death in 2005. Carolyn leaves behind her two daughters, Juanita (Rick) McCoy and Glenda (Carl) Smith; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded by her parents and her siblings, Art Decker, Richard Decker, Ernie Decker, Elizabeth McLaughlin and Charlene Sencel. 213 | Carrier Decatur - Jac R. Carrier, 79, of Forsyth, died Sunday (November 27, 2005) at 9:07 a.m. in Decatur Memorial Hospital. A private family burial will be at Cerro Gordo Cemetery, with a public memorial service being held Saturday, December 3, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. in the Crestview Christian Church, Decatur, with Pastor Stacey Brohard and Pastor Robert Low officiating. He loved and served his Lord, always thinking of how he could help others. He and his famiiy were charter member of Crestview Christian Church in Decatur. Jac was born April 28, 1926, in Peoria, IL, the son of Virgil and Vivian (Conner) Carrier. He married Esther Gritton on November 18, 1945, in Central Christian Church, Decatur, IL. He farmed for Howard Culp for several years, and then worked at Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. before retiring in 1990. Wondering what he would do with his time, he was confronted by John Henry Cain to join with other in working with Habitat for Humanity. Jac jumped at the chance to help build homes for needy people and enjoyed every minute. The camaraderie of that group was a joy to him as they worked together for others. Jac, an avid sports fan, (Especially the Cubs) faithfully supported his children's, grandchildren's, and great-grandchildren's activities. He was a long0-time member of the MFHS Chain Gang and the "Duncanville" grounds crew. He had a love for the outside, mowing and trimming his yard and church grounds were among his most loved activities. His favorite task was tending his vegetable garden, especially growing tomatoes and sharing them with the ladies who live nearby. He is survived by his wife; and daughters: Patricia (Charles) Ohlemeyer of Maroa; and Paula (Randy) Armstrong of Forsyth; son-in-law Richard Kaufman of Clinton; half-brothers, Dan Carrier of Arkansas; four grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 6 step great-grandchildren, as well as many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their gratitude to all Doctors, Nurses and Staff of DMH who diligently supported Jac and his family during his illness. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Elizabeth (Snelling) McCarty. She was a life resident of Jackson Township community. She was a graduate of Jackson Township High School and was a member of the 1949 graduating class of Home Hospital School of Nursing in Lafayette. Catherine was a homemaker. Catherine was a member of Jackson Heights United Methodist Church and a member of Shawnee Chapter # 523 Order of the Eastern Star. On September 25, 1949, Catherine married Charles E. Stafford in the Jackson Heights United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on March 14, 1991. Catherine leaves behind her six children, Dean Stafford, West Point; Russell Stafford, Romney; Bruce (Barbara) Stafford, Lafayette; Jim Stafford, Romney; twins, Kathy (Kevin) Coomey, Romney and Karen (Daniel) Slagel, Dubuque, IA; nine grandchildren, Joseph, Kevin, Kristy and Sean Stafford; Katie and Kyle Coomey; Lauren, Clare and Isaac Slagel; four great-grandchildren, Maddox, Jack, Elliot Catherine and Nora Stafford. Smith died this morning at 1:00 o'clock at the home of his father, Hiram Smith, five miles southeast of town, after a sickness of several weeks with typhoid fever and serious complications. He had been bedfast for twelve days. Mr. Smith has a wife and a son but did not live with them. He was still a young man. 225 | Chanute Newspaper ..Jerry Willard Turner, 61, died Thursday, June 27, 2002 at the Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center. ..He was born April 18, 1941 at Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of Willard M. Turner and Dorothy Smith Turner. He graduated from Uniontown High School, Uniontown, Kansas in 1959. ..He was the under sheriff for Bourbon County for two and one-half years and then became a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper in Neosho County, Kansas in 1973. In June of 1993 he was promoted to Master Trooper and specialized in the Breath Alcohol Unit. He retired from the Highway Patrol in 1996. He was currently the Safety Director at Consolidated Oil Well Services in Chanute. ..His happiest times were spent at home with his family and attending his children's activities. He could always be found riding his Harley Davidson, sitting on the deck or at the pond, working in the yard, or cooking on the grill. ..He was a member of the Chanute Church of the Nazarene; was a former Troop-Director and Troop-Representative for the Kansas State Trooper's Association. ..On June 26, 1998 he married Karen Kimble at their home in Chanute, Kansas. Charlie was born September 19, 1930 in Danville, Illinois to Burford P. & Madge L. Pyle Taylor. Charlie married Helen M. Cline December 4, 1965 in Danville, Illinois. Helen passed away August 13, 2006. Survivors include: 2 sons: Steve (Vickie Holecz) Talbert & Jed Taylor both of Danville, Illinois; Three daughters: LuAnn (Norland) Kinney, Kathy (Mark Koch) Stitt, Cheryl (Warren) Buck all of Danville, Illinois; 22 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; and sister-in-law: Betty Taylor. He was preceded in death by one son: Jim Talbert; one son-in-law: Kenny Stitt; one brother: Jack Taylor; 2 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Charlie worked for 20 years in the warehouse of Paxton Wholesale and as a security guard for 33 years at First National Bank in Danville. He also worked in maintenance at Blue Cross in Danville for 13 years. He enjoyed being assistant Scout Master of Troop 23 Boy Scouts and founded Ellsworth Panthers Football team in the 1960's. He was manager of little league & pony league baseball as well. He held membership in both Illinois & Indiana Basket & Baseball Officials Association. 228 | Charles F. McGee, 94, of Catlin, passed away at 8:40 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, while in the Palliative Care Unit at the VA Illiana Health Care System in Danville. He was born April 10, 1919 in Batestown, the son of Charles E. and Nellie Byerly McGee. He married Mary Hawkins on Feb. 17, 1943 in Hernando, Mississippi. She preceded him in death on Jan. 12, 2001. He also was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Marjorie Jones and one brother, Robert McGee. Surviving are his three children, C. Michael (Linda) McGee, David A. (Kathryn) McGee and Jeanie (Scott) Church; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, JoAnn Fetters; three nieces, Luanne Kees, Janice Hawkins and Jackie Land; three nephews, Curt McGee, Bobby McGee and Steve Hadley and special friend, Glenda Eaton. He was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He received a Purple Heart after being wounded at Guadalcanal. After serving his country, he returned home to Catlin where he farmed for over 40 years. He was the first recipient of the Outstanding Young Farmer Award in Vermilion County. He had been released from Cameron Hospital, Bryan, last week after a few days stay. He was born Aug. 18. 1872, in Vermilion County, Ill., a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Knight. He married Bessie Jackson, Danville, Ill., in March 1900. He operated a rest home in Edgerton for four years and moved to Hicksville in 1946. In 1952 he moved to Kunkle. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Dairy Eisele, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a nephew, Dale Tolbert, Danville, Ill., and a niece, Mrs. Ruth Keiser, Toledo. Born in Penfield, Ill., he lived at Reynold before moving to Remington in 1971. He was operator of Sinclair service station at Reynold for several years, retiring in 1971. Prior to that he was a mechanic at Jack Loy Chevrolet Garage at Monon for many years. In 1940 he was married to Betty Davis, who survives. 234 | Charles Randall, age 91, of San Diego, passed away on June 5, 2017. Charles was born December 12, 1925 in Danville, Illinois, son of the late Harold and Lucille (Wilson) Randall. He retired as a machinist with the L&N Railroad and then, established Printers Mark print shop in Louisville, Kentucky with his late wife, Millie. Charles was a WWII Navy veteran serving on the USS Logan where he fought in the historic battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Moore, a daughter of Fleming Russell Moore and Angelina Good Walters. They were married on April 25, 1894 in Milford (Iroquois County), Illinois. They had no children. Gritton was held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock from the Methodist Episcopal church, the pastor, Rev. T. Lee Knotts, conducting the service. Burial took place in the Odell cemetery. A quartette composed of Mrs. Arthur Marland, Mrs. M.C. Fonger, J.. Van Ness and Charles Norse rendered two selections. The Pallbearers were J.E. Pfingston, P.H. Foley, John Moore, W.D. Silvers, of Le Roy, and Mrs. Ida Brown, of Dwight. Mr. Gritton was born at Fairmount, Ill, March 5, 1864, where he grew to young manhood. He was united in marriage with Miss Myrtle E. Silvers at Fairmount, in the year 1887. They resided there a few years and later moved to Meadville, Mo. To this union four children were born, Lawrence, Grace, Floyd, and one child died in infancy. One son, Floyd, preceded his father in death in the year 1916, and his wife also passed away while living at Meadville. On July 27, 1916 he united in marriage with Mrs. Hattie Donbier, of Odell, who is left with his son, Lawrence Gritton, of Waukeshaw, Wis., the daughter of Mrs. Edward Bennet of Armon, Wis., and one step-son, Joseph Donbier of Joliet. He is also survived by six grandchildren, one step-grandson, one sister, Mrs. George Hedges, of Fairmount and one brother, Louis Gritton of Danville. Mr. Gritton had been in failing health for the past several months, and the past few weeks had been confined to his home his death occurring Monday morning at 8:30 o'clock. For the past several years Mr. Gritton was engaged in the grocery and meat market business here, and had a wide circle of friends.
