Notes - DECATUR - Ruth Ellen Roegner, 87, formerly of Decatur, IL, died May 27th of heart problems while visiting family in Crystal Lake, IL. Mrs. Roegner a lifelong teacher began her teaching career at a one room schoolhouse, in Indiana. While living in Decatur, she taught several years at St. Patrick's Elementary before teaching 1st grade for 25 years for the Mt. Zion Schools. In retirement in Florida, Mrs. Roegner established the adult literacy program in both St. Augustine, Florida and the Sumptner County Florida Area. She continued to serve as a volunteer tutor in schools until her death. Her service to education earned her the "Jefferson Award" in 2005. Mrs. Roegner's lifetime interests were diverse. As an avid card player, she accumulated Master points in Bridge, she was long time President of the Decatur Business and professional women's club, Square Dancer, RVer, gardener, host for the International Hostel Program, and for many years served as a campground host in state and national parks. Mrs. Roegner is survived by her daughter, Norma Wacaser of Crystal Lake, IL, and 4 sons, Carl Roegner of Bonham, TX, Terry Roegner, of Alexandria, VA, Jerry Roegner, of Woodbridge,VA., and Jack Roegner of Richmond, IN. She has 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Mrs. Roegner was preceded in death by a son, George, and husband, Russell Roegner. Memorial service is at Lakeside-Barrick Funeral Chapel, Danville, IL 2pm June 5th followed by Burial at Spring Hill Cemetery. Obituary written by family members.
