- John Shumate (VII). He was born probably about 1759 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia, and is believed to have died in 1822 in Harrison County, Kentucky. Apparently, he did not serve in the militia during the Revolutionary War since no record of his service can be found. His name appears close to that of his father and later separately in the Personal Property Tax Lists of Fauquier County, Virginia, from 1782 through 1795. On 28 January 1788, he married Sarah (Sally) Preston in Fauquier County. He is believed to have followed his brother Stephen Spencer (I) to Kentucky in the 1790s, and hi is believed to have settled initially in Mercer County, Kentucky, before moving to Harrison County about 1805. His name appears in the Personal Property Tax Lists of Harrison County, Kentucky from 1805 until his death in 1822. A copy of his Estate Settlement appears on page H 51, Appendix H. His widow Sally’s name appears in the Personal Property Tax Lists from 1823 through 1829 (See extracts, pages H-19 and H-19, Appendix H).
The identification and listing of the issue of John (VII) and his wife Sarah (Preston) Shumate remain somewhat speculative, because insufficient documentary evidence has been found to confirm whether all of the individuals as listed below were really their children and thereby members of the Fifth Generation. Consequently, the writer has selected the names that appear below from county records of the time and conclusions based on analytical logic.
