Roots: John Tompson, gentleman. Will dated 6 Nov. 1626, probated 11 April
1627. (The bapts. of children of Alice (Freeman) Tompson and John Tompson are
      recorded at Preston Capes).
History of the Town of Stonington by Wheeler: "John Thompson (sic), in the
year 1626, was living in 'Little Preston,' in the Parish of Preston Capes,
Northamptonshire, England, with his wife Alice, and children. On the sixth day of November in that year, 1626, John Thompson made his will, signing his name to that form; both forms of spelling, with and without the 'h' are, however, used indiscriminately in the body of the will, and on the parish register. When the eleventh of April 1627, came around, John Tompson was dead, and at that date his will was probated in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. Alice was probably the second wife of John Thompson. The son Thomas, who is mentioned in his will, was, doubtless, a child of the first wife, and the eldest son, by reason of a better inheritance than the others received. Thomas probably remained in England. We do not know what date the widow and her children came to America, but previous to 1640 she was living at Roxbury, Mass."
Source: The marriage of John Thompson and Alice Freeman also appears in an
extensive pedigree prepared and authenticated by a professional genealogist,
Richard E. Coe. It was prepared for P. Glenn Smith, at the time governor of the Society of Mayflower Descendants for the state of California.
This genealogy agrees with the same material gathered previously from other sources, effective 7 Feb. 1992, but 7th edition of of Ancestral Roots cuts this line off with Joan de Harley (Roots 29A, 33).
Roberts/Reitwiesner: John Thompson, gentleman, of Little Preston,
Northamptonshire. Died London 6 Nov. 1626. Married before 1 May 1616, Alice
      Freeman, as her first husband.
"Topographical Dictionary of 2885 English Emigrants to New England" notes a John Thompson of Preston Parva Parish, Northamptonshire, went to Stonington. Itcites the Charles E. Banks Mssg. A relative? Son?
Am. Genealogist, 13/8: John Tompson, gentleman, died in Little Preston, a
hamlet in the parish of Preston Capes, Northamptonshire. Will 6 Nov. 1626,
proved 11 April 1627. Will mentions wife Alice Tompson and son Thomas Tompson, not yet 12 years old. Speaks of "all my children" but does not name them. Directs brothers-in-law William Spencer, a minister, and Henry Freeman to sell certain properties, proceeds to be distributed among children other than Thomas when they reached age 21. Wife Alice and brother-in-law Thomas Freeman were made executors of his estate. Parish records list baptisms of six children, with five surnames spelled Thompson and one Tompson. Preston Capes Parish records do not mention burial of John. He may have been buried elsewhere.
Am. Genealogist, 14/145 and 146: John Tomson, married Alice Freeman before 1 April 1616. Died 6 Nov. 1626 in London. His will bears the same date, which is evidence that it was made very shortly before his death. Since no record of his burial at Little Preston was found, he may have been buried in London.
Migration: John Thompson of Preston, Northamptonshire.
Witter Family: John Thompson, born about 1580-1590. Will dated 6 Nov. 1626
and proved 11 April 1627 at Little Preston, Preston Capes, Northamptonshire,
England. "Gentleman"; apparently had land at manor of Saxby, Leicestershire.
      Married Alice Freeman about 1615.
Sureties: John Tompson, gentleman, of Little Preston, Preston Capes. Born
about 1580/90, son of Thomas Tompson. Died London, 6 Nov. 1626.
      Carolingian: John Tompson.
