    Retired Farmer Succumbs to Year's Illness; Funeral Will Be Tomorrow.
    Joy, Ill., Aug. 15 - (Argus News Service) - Edward P. Gritton, age 81, died at his home yesterday afternoon. He had been in failing health for a year.
    Mr. Gritton was born April 20, 1858, in Marion, Iowa, a son of Levi and Elizabeth Gritton. He married Sarah Caroline Minteer in Aledo, Sept. 13, 1883.
    They have lived in Joy for 17 years following their retirement from a Mercer farm. Mr. Gritton was a member of the Modern Woodmen.
    Surviving are the widow; four sons, Glenn and Elmer of Aledo, Lewis of Muscatine, Iowa, and Joseph of New Boston; two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Dorsett of Joy and Mrs. Pearl Norton of New Boston; a brother, Norman of Tipton, Iowa, and a sister, Mrs. Clara Boyles of Joy. A daughter, Nellie and son, Clarence, preceded him in death.
    The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Joy Methodist church, with Elder Vanderwood of the Latter Day Saints church, Rock Island, officiating, assisted by the Rev. A.H. Dickinson, pastor of the Joy Methodist church. Burial will be in the Millersburg cemetery.

    Aledo - Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Dorsett, 85, of Elmhurst, Ill., formerly of Joy and Eliza, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Reiser Chapel, Aledo. Elder Clyde McKee of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Rock Island will officiate. Burial will be in the Millersburg cemetery.
    Visitation will be held after 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at Reiser Chapel.
    Mr. Dorsett died Monday morning at the Americana Nursing Home at Naperville.
    A daughter of Edward and Sarah Minteer Gritton, she was born April 22, 1884 at Petersville, Ill.
    The former Bertha Gritton married James E. Dorsett April 12, 1919 at Lamoni, Iowa. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; and had been a Gray Lady of the Red Cross 12 years, having been cited for her services.
    Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. George (Lillian) Wamsley of Elmhurst, Ill., with whom she had made her home; three brothers, Joe and Elmer Gritton of Aledo and Lewis Gritton of Muscatine; one sister, Mrs. Wesley (Earl) Norton of Joy; also three grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister and two brothers.

    Mr. Gritton, who lived at 109 North Ash, Aledo, was a resident here since 1914. A son of Ed and Sarah Minteer Gritton, he was born Jan. 19, 1886, in Eliza township. He was educated in the Eliza schools. His marriage to Iona Baker took place Dec. 20, 1911, at Aledo. They farmed near Millersburg until moving here. A retired carpenter, he was a former member of the Modern Woodmen of America.
    Surviving are his wife; four daughters, Mrs. Leta Churchill, Freeport, La., Mrs. Lillian Meyers, Buffalo Prairie, Mrs. Alice McMullen, New Windsor, and Mrs. Helen Elliott, Rock Island; three brothers, Louis, Muscatine, Elmer, Aledo, and Joe, Eliza; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Dorsett, Rock Island, and Mrs. Pearl Norton, Joy; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. One brother, one sister and his parents preceded him in death.

    Reynolds, Ill., Feb. 26. - (Argus News Service) - Funeral services for Clarence Gritton, Edgington township resident who died of pneumonia in his home at 4:30 o'clock Sunday morning, were conducted yesterday afternoon in the Freytag mortuary, Reynolds.
    The Rev. Hugh Robinson of the Edgington Presbyterian church and the Rev. C.B. Larson of the Illinois City Methodist church, officiated. Burial was in the Edginton cemetery and pallbearers were Laurence Rommell, Earl Boultinghouse, James Sackville, Ben Berr, George Carlson and John Stropes.
    Mr. Gritton was born Marsh 2, 1888, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gritton, who now reside in Joy. He married Ethel Robbins a number of years ago.
    Surviving are the widow; the parents; four sons, Lonnie and Bert Gritton of Milan and Eldon and Warren Gritton, at home; a daughter, Ruth Gritton, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Dorsitt of Joy and Mrs. Pearl Norton of New Boston, and four brothers, Glenn Gritton of Aledo, Joseph and Elmer Gritton of Aledo and Louis Gritton of Muscatine.

    Mr. Gritton was born Jan. 5, 1891, in Eliza Township, a son of Edward and Sarah Minteer Gritton.
    He worked on the assembly line at International Harvester East Moline Works for many years until his retirement in 1955. Prior to that he was employed at the Rock Island Arsenal and engaged in farming.
    He was a veteran of World War I.
    He is survived by his wife.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

    Mr. Gritton was a member of the First Christian Church. A former member of the Muscatine Board of Health, he was a retired employee of the International Harvester Co.
    Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Anna Gritton at home; three sons, Dr. Charlie L. Gritton of Henderson, Ky., Paul Gritton of Fort Dodge, Robert E. Gritton of Russellville, Ark.; four daughters, Mrs. Edwin (Evelyn) Elliott, Mrs. Carl (Vivian) Irvin, Mrs. Vernon (Margaret) Webb and Mrs. Clifford (Marjorie) Hintermeister, all of Muscatine; two brothers, Elmer and Joseph Gritton, both of Aledo; one sister, Mrs. Wesley (Pearl) Norton of Joy, 21 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren.

    Mr. Gritton was born April 18, 1896, in Duncan Township, Mercer County, a son of Edward and Sarah Minteer Gritton. He attended the schools in Eliza.
    On Feb. 15, 1922, he married Vivian Pearson. The couple farmed in Eliza Township until 1963 when they retired and moved to Aledo.
    Mr. Gritton was of Protestant faith, and a member of the Mercer County Farm Bureau.
    Surviving are the widow; a son, George of Aledo; a daughter, Mrs. Wayne Smith of New Boston; a granddaughter, and a sister, Mrs. Wesley Norton of Joy.
    He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sister.

    Della Chasteen Succumbs Today To Long Illness
    Mrs. Della Chasteen, 48, who resided near Bolsa, died at an Orange hospital today following an extended illness. She had lived in Orange county for the past 13 years and was born in Kansas.
    Her husband, Harry Chasteen, and the following children survive: Mrs. F.C. Barnheart, of Washington; Mrs. W.E. Hudgens, of New London, Connecticut; Mrs. W.J. Kolb, of Willowcreek, California; Lillian, Harry James and Maxine Chasteen, all of Bolsa. Her mother, Mrs. Lillian Peters, of Iowa, also survived.
    Funeral services will be announced later by the Harrell and Brown Funeral home.

    SERVICES FOR G. EVELYN ELLIOTT will be Friday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Mrs. Elliott, 74, 143 Sherman St, died Tuesday evening at her home, Rev. Roger Miller of the First Christian Church will officiate and burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be today at the funeral home. Memorials may be left to the First Christian Church, the Muscatine Hospice and Community Nursing Services.
    She was born March 17, 1915 at New Boston, Ill, and had lived in Muscatine since 1928. She married Edwin L. "Ted" Elliott on August 28, 1937 in Muscatine. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the Rebecca CWF Circle. Mrs. Elliott was employed by the Muscatine County Abstract Co., J.B. Mark and Sons Insurance, Muscatine Lighting, Stanley Consultants, and did the accounting for the family business of Elliott Brothers. She also worked for many years for the Driver's License Division of the Iowa Highway Patrol. She retired in 1984 as an office employee of Louis Rich and taught evening classes in ABC Shorthand and typing at Muscatine Community College before retiring from teaching in 1987.
    Survivors include one son Thomas Elliott, and one foster child, Steve Harfst, Muscatine, three daughters, Mrs. Sandra Carpenter, Moscow, Mrs. Jerry (Barbara) Musgrove and Mrs. Juanita Sheese both of Muscatine, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, Dr. Charlie Gritton, Henderson, Ky., Paul Gritton, Fort Dodge, and Robert Gritton, Russelville, Ark., and three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Vivian) Irwin, Mrs. Margaret Webb and Mrs. Clifford (Marjorie) Hintermeister, all of Muscatine. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband in 1964.

    Dr. Charlie Leroy Gritton, 86, of Henderson, Ky., died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2003 at Western Kentucky Veterans Center in Hanson, Ky.
    Graveside services 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Millersburg Cemetery.
    Dennison Funeral Home in Aledo is handling arrangements.
    Charlie was born Jan. 4, 1917 in New Boston, the son of Lewis and Eunice Matthews Gritton. He married his wife of 64 years, Virginia Hyett. She died Feb. 19, 2003.
    Charlie was a 1948 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.
    He was a Henderson Chiropractor for over 50 years.
    Charlie was a Kentucky Colonel in World War II U.S. Army veteran - founding member of the Henderson Disabled American Veterans.
    He was a Seventh Street P.T. A. President - United Commercial Travelers - served as Indiana State Treasurer.
    Survivors include three daughters: Myrna Taylor of Franklin, Ky.; Marcia Littlefield of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and Joy Gritton of Morehead, Ky.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters: Vivian Irwin, Margaret Travis, and Marjorie Hintermeister, all of Muscatine, Iowa; one brother: Robert Gritton of Russellville, Ark.; nieces and nephews; and a special neighbor: Donald Steele of Henderson, Ky.
    He was preceded in death by his wife; one daughter: Kahla Bowling; his parents; one sister: Evelyn Elliott; and one brother: Paul Gritton.

    Paul Gritton, FORT DODGE, Iowa #45;- Paul I. Gritton, 79, Fort Dodge, formerly of Muscatine, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at Trinity Regional Medical Center, Fort Dodge. Graveside services were Monday at the Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island, Ill., with military rites. Mr. Gritton was born on Feb. 13, 1923, in New Boston, Ill., the son of Lewis and Eunice Mathews Gritton. He married Cleo Carver on Oct. 17, 1941 in Kahoka, Mo. He graduated from Muscatine High School in 1941. He moved to Fort Dodge in 1952. He was manager of the Des Moines Register Agency for 32 years, retiring in 1984. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Fort Dodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1856 and Northwest Iowa boat club.
