    Ref: History of Champaign Co., OH, 1881, - David Yeazell, farmer; PO Mechanicsburg; an early settler of Goshen Township; was born in June, 1804, near Yellow Springs, Greene Co., OH, and raised in Clark Co., till the fall of 1826, when he came to the place where he now resides, locating the 15th of December, in the house in which he now lives; he is the son of Abraham and Mary (Curl) Yeazell, the former a native of KY and the latter of VA. Abraham was among the early pioneers of Greene Co, whence he moved to Clark Co, when our subject was quite young; he dwelt on the same farm the remainder of his life; he was a farmer by occupation, and reared nine sons and five daughters, all of whom grew to maturity and were married. Our subject was the sixth of the family, and his early life was that of a pioneer farmer. Since 1826, he has plied his industry as a farmer in Goshen Township, taking a creditable part in the improvement of the country for over half a century. He married Esther Bumgartner, born in Greene and raised in Clark Co, OH. Of the two sons and two daughters born to this union, one daughter has died.

    JOHN A. YEAZEL, who was one of Moorefield's leading citizens for many years, was born on the old Jacob Yeazel farm, in Moorefield Township, October 10, 1837, and died August 3, 1907. He was a son of Jacob and Ellen (Foley) Yeazel.
    Jacob Yeazel was born November 10, 1809, near Todd's Fork, Clinton County, Ohio, and was a son of Abraham and Mary (Curl) Yeazel. He married Ellen Foley, who was born January 14, 1810, a daughter of John and Jane (Reiser) Foley. The Foleys were very early settlers of Moorefield Township, locating here when the country was a wilderness and Indians were numerous. The paternal grandfather of John A. Yeazel, Abraham Yeazel, was born in Virginia, April 29, 1774, and in October, 1794, was married to Mary Curl, who was born October 30, 1776. It will be seen that this family can be easily traced for several generations, and its members have always been people of high character and useful lives.
    The late John A. Yeazel followed agri cultural pursuits, a large portion of his life having been spent in Moorefield Township. After his first marriage he settled in Madison County, Ohio, but after the death of his wife, several years later, he sold his farm in Madison County and re- turned to Moorefield Township, where he lived for the remainder of his life with the exception of about four years spent in Harmony Township. There he owned 283 acres.
    John A. Yeazel was married (first) to Mary A. Baird, who died in Madison County, leaving three children, namely: Sarah, who is the wife of Joseph W. Page ; Walter D., who married Lura Snaufer; and Fannie, who married Henry Otstot. Mr. Yeazel was married (second) to Angeline Hodge, March 14, 1872. Mrs. Yeazel was born and reared in Pleasant Township, Clark County, Ohio, and is a daughter of Samuel E. and Sevina (Spencer) Hodge. Samuel E. Hodge was born in Virginia and was a son of Andrew Hodge, who was the pioneer who came at an early date to Clark County and settled on the farm which has never since been owned by other than a Hodge, it now being the property of Matthew Hodge, the brother of Mrs. Yeazel. When the grandfather came to this section of country and selected the land he wished to enter, he started back to Virginia to bring his money in order to make a payment. He placed the wallet in his saddle-bags, on the back of his trusty horse. When he reached the Ohio River it was in a swollen condition and when Mr. Hodge attempted to swim his horse across, the rapidly flowing current overturned the saddle-bags and the heavy wallet went to the bottom. Many experiences had be- fore this tested the traveler's bravery and ingenuity, and without the loss of a moment he was equal to this call on his powers, and diving to the bottom he se- cured the precious purse which represented, probably, the savings of years.
    Mr. and Mrs. Yeazel had one child, Claret B., who married Walter Snaufer. Mr. and Mrs. Snaufer have six children, namely : Blanche B., Ruth E., Sevina E., Edith M., Carl D. and Hazel M.
    Sevina (Spencer) Hodge, the mother of Mrs. Yeazel, was a daughter of Matthew Spencer, who was a native of New York. He came with his family to Clark County before any divisions of land had been made and settled before the building o the old National Turnpike road. Mrs. Hodge remembers it being constructed when she was a girl.

    Died near Homer, January 13, about 10 o'clock p.m., James Yeazel, aged 70 years, 10 months and 12 days. "Uncle Jim,' as he was familiarly known, was born near Springfield, Ohio. He was married to Mary Maria Spencer, Sept. 7, 1837. They lived happy together until March 9, 1867, when she was called to meet her Savior. In their 30 years to wedded life, twelve children came to bless their union, seven of whom survive, viz: John and William, who live near East Lynn; Abraham and Inez, who reside in Nebraska; and Abigal, Alice and Mathew, who reside in and near Home, all of whom are married. "Uncle Jim" was one of the oldest pioneers. He came to Illinois 48 years ago, locating one and a quarter miles west of Homer, on the family on which he lived until his death. He was quite successful in the accumulation of this world's goods, and has long been considered one of Homer's wealthiest farmers and stock raisers. His residence, a substantial two-story brick, is one of the best in the county. Two brothers, Jacob and David Yeazel, and two sisters, Sidney Crabell and Sally Smith, survive him, the first named sister having reached the advanced age of 90 years and the second 73 years. The two brothers have also reached a ripe age. James Yeazel was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Babb, in May, 1871; two children was the result of this union. He was not a member of any church. His funeral was preached at the family residence by Rev. J.H. Colwell, at 10 o'clock Saturday, and his remains were laid to rest in the Old Homer cemetery. Thus another old pioneer of Champaign county, from the few who remain, has been called to meet his reward.

    Among the business interests which contribute to the prosperity and commercial activity in New Moorefield is that conducted by Mr Yeazell, dealer in flour, grain, coal and feed. He has labored earnestly to secure a good trade and his business methods have ever been such as would bear the closest investigation and scrutiny for he has strict regard for commercial ethics.
    He was born in the township of Moorefield October 14, 1836, and is a son of George and Elizabeth (Jones) Yeazell. Upon the home farm his boyhood days here passed in the usual manner of lads of the period and in the district schools he mastered the branches of learning usually taught in such institutions. He had passed his twenty-first birthday when he started out in life upon his own account, by operating rented land. He had been married on the l0th of November 1857 in Pleasant township, Clark county, to Miss Sarah T Ferguson. a daughter of Joseph and Jane (Neer) Ferguson, who lived in Pleasant township until 1890.
    In 1870 Mr Yeazell purchased land becoming a the owner of a farm of one hundred and fifty acres in Pleasant township and there he continued to live until 1890, during which time he erected two barns upon his place and remodeled the house. He still owns the farm, which is a good one of the county. In the year mentioned, he purchased the mill prroperty at New Moorefield. It was then equipped with the old fashioned burrs but he at once put in a roller process and has developed a paving business. In 1901 he further remodeled the plant, putting in a sifter system in place of the reel system. The mill is operated by water power and has a capacity of fifty barrels per day. Mr Yeazell has a large sale for the Royal flower which he manufactures and he also deals in grain, coal and feed having a liberal patronage.
    Unto our subject and his wife have been born four children, but two of the number died in infancy. Charles born in September, 1858, passed away, in September, 1893. He was married in Missouri to Miss Emma Miller studied law in Springfield and was achy fitted to the bar. He was so ambitious that while pursuing his studies he did not take the needed time for rest and recreation, his health became impaired and he lived but a few months after he became a practicing lawyer. He left two children, Leona and Edwin, the latter being now a partner with his uncle at Columbia, Missouri in a shoe store there. Lena G born June 16, 1875, is at home with her parents.
    Mr Yeazell cast his first presidential vote in 1860 for Bell. He had been reared in the Whig faith and after his first vote was cast he became a Republican and has since voted with the party. For nine years he has filled the office of justice of the peace discharging his duties with fairness promptness and impartiality. Although he has tried many cases none have ever been appealed. He has been a trustee of Pleasant township for a few years, but is not a politician in the sense of office seeking, his business claiming the greater part of his time. Formerly he was connected with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Catawba.
    It will be interesting in this connection to note something of the family history of Mr Yeazell. His father was George Yeazell, who was born in Virginia and was fourteen years of age when in 1811 he came to Ohio with his parents Abraham and Rachel (Curl) Yeazell, who were also natives of the Old Dominion. The grandfather became the owner of a large tract of land and died in this state at the age of fifty-five years. George Yeazell also had extensive realty holdings comprising four hundred acres of valuable land. He died at the age of sixty-eight years, respected by all who knew him because his life had been an honorable and upright one. He left nine children, of whom our subject was the fifth in order of 'birth, while five are still living. George, who was a farmer and died in Catawba left eight children. Mary Ann was married and is now deceased. Jeremiah died in Harmony township leaving one child. Eliza became the wife of Dr Grower and died in Moorefield township, leaving one. John W was the next of the family. Isaac is a carpenter living in Springfield and has three children, Caroline is the widow of Martin Mahar, by whom she had five children, and her home is in Catawba. Angeline is the wife of John Waltman by whom she has two children, their home being Pleasant township. Francis M lives in Springfield and has five children. Jeremiah was a lieutenant in the Seventeenth Ohio Volunteer Battery and losing his health in the service was therefore obliged to resign. Francis M served as a private of the Sixteenth Ohio Battery.

    HOMER, Nov. 28. – Funeral services for James P. Yeazel, 81 years of age, will be held at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon in First Presbyterian church, with Rev. J. M. Bean, pastor of Presbyterian church of Allerton, officiating. Burial will be made in Homer G. A. R. cemetery. Mr. Yeazel died Tuesday afternoon in his home one mile west of town from complication of disease brought on by infirmities of age. He was born Feb. 14, 1847 in Old Homer and was married to Miss Lucy Taylor on December 11, 1878. They would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary if he had lived to that date this year. Mr. Yeazel was a member of First Presbyterian church, and has been an active worker in the church. He was a member of the Homer Masonic lodge, the Consistory of Masonic lodge, Danville and the Homer M. W. A. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Lucy Yeazel; one daughter, Mrs. Barton Parrish of Allerton; two grandchildren, and one great grandchild; and a brother, Wallace Yeazel of Homer.     Retired Farmer Had Spent Entire Life In Homer Community

    Thursday, August 31, 1939

    Matthew L. Yeazel, a life-long and esteemed resident of Homer community, died at his home on West First street at 6:30 p. m. Sunday, Aug. 27. His illness and death resulted from complications due to his advanced age of 81 years. For many months he had been forced to be in bed for several days at a time, but rallied from each attack enough to care for his home and to take an occasional trip to town.
    The body lay in state at the Presbyterian church Wednesday morning and until the hour for the funeral services, which were conducted from the church by the pastor, Rev. W. I. Toussaint. Interment, with a short graveside service by the Odd Fellows lodge, was in G. A. R. cemetery. Scott funeral service was in charge of arrangements.
    Serving as pall bearers were his nephews: J. T. and Charles A. Yeazel, William H. and Ralph O’Neil and J. C. Robert and Roy Hall.
    Flowers were carried by Mrs. H. V. Lacey, Mrs. Roy Lee, Mrs. Arthur Ford, Mrs. Clarence Ellis, Mrs. J. E. Miles, Mrs. Walter Wood, Mrs. H. P. Morrison, Mrs. George Porter and Miss Lillian Conkey. Funeral hymns were sung by Mrs. Miles, Mrs. Porter, Mrs. Morrison and Mrs. Howard Hess.
    Mr. Yeazel was born June 12, 1858, in a log house one mile west of here and about one-fourth mile north of the farm residence where the Irvin Wakefield family now lives. He was the son of James and Maria Spencer Yeazel. In 1879 he was married to Julia Smith (one line not readable) death in March, 1925. He later married Della Agnew, who survives him.
    Mr. Yeazel was engaged in farming most of his life, retiring and coming to Homer about 18 years ago. He was a member of Homer Presbyterian church and of the local I. O. O. F. lodge, and for years was a member of the K. of P. order. He was a charter member of a social organization of friends who were young people in the 1870’s who called themselves “Boys and Girls of the 70’s”. He served as treasurer of the group since its organization and derived much pleasure from the meetings of the group of old friends.
    Surviving besides his wife are three daughters by his first marriage: Mrs. Nell Davis, Sheridan, Wyo.; Mrs. Lelia Johnston, Valparaiso, Ind., and Mrs. Estella Havard, Homer. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a half-brother, Milton J. Yeazel, Danville. Ralph O’Neil, Homer, is a nephew.

    John H. Gower, a general farmer who owns fifty acres in Harmony and Springfield Townships, belongs to a family that was established in Clark County in 1850. Mr. Gower was born in Pleasant Township, Clark County, Ohio, May 23, 1852, and is a son of James Z. and Eliza C. (Yeazel) Gower.
    James Z. Gower was born in Maryland and was a son of George Gower. In 1850 he came to Clark County and taught school and studied medicine, remaining until after the birth of his son, when he moved to Michigan, where he lived one year, and from there to Indiana, where he continued to practice medicine until his death, October 9, 1875, at the age of forty-five years. He married Eliza C. Yeazel, who was born in Moorefield Township, Clark County, April 24, 1834. They had two children: John H. and Elizabeth. The latter died in infancy.
    John H. Gower has lived in Clark County almost all his life, and has followed agricultural pursuits. In 1878 he purchased his present farm, on which he has continued to make excellent improvements. He carries on general farming and handles thorough-bred stock. For about twenty years he dealt in imported stallions. On February 16, 1871, he was married in Clark County, to Mary E. McClellan, and they had the following children: Maurice H., Lottie A., Orrie L., Richard, Stuart M., Mary A., and James L. Maurice H., born October 26, 1873, married (first Lillian E. Poffenberger, and they had three children: John M., Isabel and Harriet. He married (second) Ella Eaton and they reside at Springfield. Lottie A., born October 11, 1875, married John L. Tuttle, and they have two children, John H. and Helen, and they live at Mansfield, Ohio. Richard, born April 1, 1883, died December 6, 1888. Orrie was born May 5, 1877. Stuart M., born December 12, 1884, married Emma Burkhardt, and they have one child, John Ernest, and they reside on the homestead. Mary A., born April 4, 1887, married Harry Nicklen, and they live at Springfield. James L., born October 17, 1889, is a student in the High School at Plattsburg, class of 1908.
    Mrs. Gower is a member, on the maternal side, of the prominent Tuttle family. Her father, Jacob McClellan, was born May 4, 1830, and died in 1892. He married Rachel Tuttle, who still survives. She was born September 29, 1832. Mr. and Mrs. McClellan had five children, namely: Isabel, Mary E., Emma, Alice and William L.
    Mr. Gower and family belong to the Universalist Church at Springfield.

    Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Jeanes’ Funeral Home for Mrs. Elizabeth Umbanhowar, 89, and burial was made in G.A.R. Cemetery. Mrs. Umbanhowar passed away at 4:15 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23rd, in Burnham Hospital, Champaign, where she had been taken on Tuesday. Born Feb. 25, 1868 near Homer, she was the daughter of Edward and Sarah Yeazel Hall. She was married Feb. 16, 1888 to James H. Umbanhowar, who preceded her in death in 1926. The couple farmed near Homer until her husband’s death, after which Mrs. Umbanhowar moved to Homer. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ray Tate of Homer; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sons, Charles, Fred and Audrey. Mrs. Umbanhowar was a member of the Homer Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.     Mrs. Belle Helton Dies in Ogden.
    Ogden, Jan. 24 - Mrs. Belle Helton, the widow of the late Douglas Helton, an Ogden jeweler, died at her home at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon following an illness of several months duration. Her death was though to have been caused by cancer.
    Mrs. Helton was born in Champaign county. At the time of her death she was 57 years of age. Her husband died on Jan. 31, 1920. One son, Elvin, who had lived at home with his mother; three brothers, T.W., of Ogden; J.R. of near St. Joseph; and Otis, also of near St. Joseph; and one sister Mrs. E. Y. Yeats of Champaign county survive.
    The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Methodist church in Ogden. The Rev. B. L. Rudd, pastor of the church, will speak at the funeral. The interment will be made in the G.A.R. cemetery at Homer.

    Sigel M. Yeazel, 63, retired Homer farmer and trucker, died Saturday afternoon in Illinois Research hospital, Chicago, where he had been a patient for two weeks. He underwent a major operation a week before his death and appeared to be recovering. Mrs. Yeazel and son, Glen, had visited with him Wednesday and Mrs. Yeazel planned to return Sunday. Funeral services were conducted at 3 p. m. Tuesday in Homer Methodist church with Rev. R. E. Buford officiating. Burial was in GAR cemetery. Mr. Yeazel was born Aug. 10, 1884, son of Wallace and Sarah Cessna Yeazel, on a farm north of Homer. He was married to Edith Waggoner, who died in November, 1918. He later married Hattie Blacker. They moved to town about 15 years ago from a farm southeast of Homer, and he had been a trucker since then. Surviving are his wife, Hattie; three children by his first marriage, Mrs. Nellie Anderson, Homer, and Mrs. Helen Bryant and Glen Yeazel, both of St. Joseph; his mother, Mrs. Sarah Yeazel, 92, Homer; 13 grandchildren; three step-children, Mrs. Violet Yeazel, St. Joseph; Mrs. Dorothy Atkinson, Indianola, and Floyd Blacker, Champaign. He also leaves two brothers, Troy, Rockwell City, Iowa, and Rolla, Fairmount; and five sisters, Mrs. Nellie Johnson, Homer; Mrs. Ada Hillard, Homer; Mrs. Mabel Stayton, Ogden; Mrs. Bertha Hartley, Decatur, and Mrs. Mertie Clester, Fairmount.

    OGDEN – Mable Ellen Stayton, 95, of Ogden died Sunday evening (Dec. 19, 1982) at Americana Health Care Center, Normal.
    Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Freese Funeral Home, St. Joseph, the Rev. Dennis Divan officiating. Burial will be in G.A.R. cemetery, Homer.
    There will be no visitation.
    Mrs. Stayton was born Feb. 11, 1887, near Homer, a daughter of Adam Wallace and Sarah Cessna Yeazel. She married James Stayton of Ogden, Oct. 18, 1905. He died Jan. 29, 1954.
    She is survived by a son, Ralph Stayton of Ogden; a daughter Pauline Esworth, of Normal; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; and a sister Bertha Hartley of Decatur. One son, three sisters and three brothers preceded her in death.
    Mrs. Stayton was a member of the Ogden First United Methodist Church.
    Memorials can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

    Chester "Rollie" Yeazel was born to Adam and Sarah Yeazel in Homer. In 1915, he married Sophia Cordella Hedges in Fairmount, and they had two sons: Howard and Harold Yeazel. Rollie and Sophia lived in the Center Point area for 27 years, starting in 1918 and were members of the Center Point Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School superintendent. They moved to Fairmount on March 6, 1945 and he entered public office in 1949, serving as Fairmount Mayor until 1968, including a short time in the early 1960s when he initially didn't seek re-election, but was asked to return after the winning candidate stepped down shortly after election. Improvements under Rollie Yeazel to the town of Fairmount included the installation of the water system and water treatment plant in 1951 at a cost of $135,000 that was raised through municipal and revenue bonds, new signals and gates for the railroad crossing and natural gas that was pumped in from the Sidell area. After he stepped out of public office, he took up the hobby of caning furniture.

    She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
    The family has suggested memorial contributions to Homer United Methodist Church, where she had been church organist for several years.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Anne Sweeney, 80, a resident of San Benito for 50 years, are set for 10 a.m. today in San Benito All Saints Episcopal Church with the Rev. Charles Robinson officiating.
    Mrs. Sweeney died Sunday in a Harlingen nursing home. She was the widow of James W. Sweeney, who died in 1969. She was for many years active in civic work in San Benito.
    She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Robert R. Rumbo of Harlingen, who asks that those wishing to give memorial donations send them to Dolly Vinsant Hospital, where Mrs. Sweeney had been a “Grey Lady” for many years.
    Pallbearers will be R.A. O’Neal, E.W. Franke, Frank McCowan, W.W. Reed, John Rugaart, Barney Majeskey.
    Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park in Brownsville under direction of Thomae Funeral Directors.

    "Perhaps one of the best known and most successful business men of Alvin is Frank E. Yeazel, who is president of the Village Board. He was born at Alvin, October 29, 1887, the son of William A. and Ellen (Green) Yeazel.

    William A. Yeazel was born near Homer, Illinois. He lived in Ohio for a number of years and later came to Illinois, where he engaged in general farming near Rossville. Subsequently, he settled on land near Alvin, where he lived for more than half a century. He died in 1923 at the age of seventy-three years and is buried at Manns Chapel, Rossville. His widow resides at Alvin. The following children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Yeazel: Clark, lives at Danville; May, married Clarence Teagarden, lives at Newport, Kentucky; George, who died in 1918; Earl, who died at the age of twenty years; Fannie, married E. A. Peterson, lives at Alvin; Ethel, married Charles Mathews, lives near Alvin; Frank E., the subject of this sketch; Abbie, died in March, 1929, was the wife of Harold Crayton, who died in 1920; and Ralph A., lives in Danville.

    Frank E. Yeazel was reared on a farm just west of Alvin and obtained his education in the district schools. For a few years he was interested in farming and later entered the railway mail service. In 1914 he became manager of the Farmers Grain Company and two years later organized the Alvin Grain & Electric Company, Inc. He had complete charge of the installation of electric service in Alvin and in 1918 the service was extended to Bismark, Illinois, and State Line, Indiana. Two years later Mr. Yeazel sold his interst in the grain business which he had established and deboted his entire time to the Alvin Light & Power Company. The business has expanded during the past few years and now has lines to Hendrick, West Newell, Illinois, and Rence, Indiana. Service was extended to Armstrong and Henning 1925 when the R.C. Wilson Light Company was purchased. Mr. Yeazel, however, sold these properties, and is now intered in the coal, tile and cement business.

    On October 15, 1910, Mr. Yeazel married Miss Grace Swisher, of Rossville, Illinois, the daughter of Chester and Ella (Maury) Swisher, natives of Pennsylvania. Mr. Swisher died in 1914 and his widow lives at Rossville. Mr. and Mrs. Yeazel have no children.

    Mr. Yeazel is a Republican and served as a president of the Alvin School Board in 1928. He was elected president of the Village Board on April 16, 1929. He and his wife hold membership in the Christian Church, and he also belongs to the Isaac Walton League.

    In 1926 Mr. Yeazel built one of the finest homes in this section of the county. It is of brick structure and is attractively ocated on ten acres of land in the west end of the town.
