Laban Gritten is classed among the leading farmers and stock raisers of Pilot Township, he having contributed much towards making it a great agricultural center. His farm on section 22 is comparable with the finest and best in this section of Vermilion County, is so cultivated as to produce large harvests, and its buildings and all other appointments are first-class. Mr. Gritten has evolved this desirable farm from the wild prairies of Illinois, as they were many years ago, before they had been changed by cultivation, it having been government land when he purchased it more than thirty years ago, and situated in the midst of a sparsely populated, scarcely civilized country.
Mr. Gritten is a Kentuckian by birth, born in Mercer County, Jan. 19, 1832. His father, John R. Gritten, was born in the same county in 1807. He married Nancy Atkinson, who was born there in 1806, and they came to this county with their family in 1842, and located on a farm of 120 acres, pleasantly situated in Blount Township, where they have built up a comfortable home, and now, in life's decline are enjoying the hard-earned fruits of their united labor. Three of the children that have blessed their union are still living: Ann, residing in Danville Township, is the widow of Frank Watson, of Ohio, and has five children - William John, Nancy J., Margaret and Martha; Lloyd married Sarah Gritten, daughter of one of the first settles of the county, and they have four children - Wesley, Annie, Ella and Elisha; Laban is the subject of this sketch, and we write further on him.
We have seen that his parents brought him there in pioneer times, when he was a mere lad, and here they bred him to a life of usefulness, and fitted him for an honorable career, and to their careful training he doubtless owes much of his prosperity. He became many, self-reliant and a good worker, and in early manhood prudently invested his money in government land, proposing to make farming his life work, and purchased 320 acres of land at twenty-five cents an acre. He now has the land all under excellent cultivation, and has greatly increased its value by the many fine improvements that he has made, including substantial buildings, etc. He does a general farming business, has his farm well stocked with stock of high grades, from the sale of which he makes good profits, and he raises a good deal of grain and other farm produce, from which he derives an income amply sufficing to carry on his agricultural operations in good shape, and for all his personal wants.
Mr. Gritten has been twice married. His first wife was a Miss Sarah Potter, who was a English descent, and her father, an early settle of this part of Illinois, took part in the black Hawk War under General Taylor. Five children were born to our subject in that union, of whom one died; the others are Orsmus, Charles, Edward and Thomas. Orsmus, a carpenter in Danville, married Miss May Gritten; Charles, living with his father on the homestead, married Matilda Gritten, and they have seven children - Clarence, Arthur, Orsmus, Elzora, Oliver, Ross and Rock. Edward, a farmer in this, married Miss Bell Davis, of Ohio, and they have one child, Jesse B.; Thomas, a blacksmith at Bixby, married Martha Schank, and they have three children - Earl, Maude and Olive.
For his second wife Mr. Gritten married Miss Lydia Pile, a native o Breckenridge County, Ky., and of their eleven children the following five are living: Oracena, Alvina, Jacob, Eli and William.
William and Elizabeth Pile were the parents of Mrs. Gritten, the father a native of Virginia, the mother a native of Kentucky, and both are deceased.
Mr. Gritten may well be proud of his farm, whose increased value is due to his hard labor and excellent business capacity and management. He possesses sober judgment, keen discernment and a resolute nature that has overcome all obstacles in the path to success. In his political views he sides with the Democrats, and give his hearty approval to party measures.

Has Arm Buried With Him
Unusual Request of Laban Gritten Who Recently Died
Collison, Ill., April 2. - Perhaps one of the most novel requests ever made by a citizen of this part of the county was that made by Laben Gritten, an aged resident of Blount township, who passed away at the home of his son, William Gritten. The decedent had the misfortune to lose an arm 22 years ago last January and the dismembered part of the body was buried on the on the home place, where it remained since the accident happened. Realizing that he was going to pass away, Mr. Gritten made the request that the arm be disinterred and that it be buried with his body in the Knight's Branch cemetery. While, of course, the arm had long ago returned to dust, the children of the decedent sough to carry out the dying wish of their father and the ashes of the arm he had lost more than two decades were taken up just preceding the burial of the body and were interred with the later, Wednesday morning.
Mr. Gritten was born in the state of Kentucky, January 19, 1931, and came to Illinois when but twelve years of age. His parents located in Blount township and he had been a resident of this county ever since. When but a young man he moved to Pilot township and located in the northwest corner of the township, near No.5 school house, where he entered a tract of land at 25 cents per are from the government, and resided there until 1907. Watson funeral is held Monday.
Services for aged Newell Township woman took place from chapel.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ann Watson, aged resident of Newell township, who died at noon Saturday at the home of her daughter, nine miles north of Danville, was held at noon Monday from the Union chapel near her old home. Rev. Clay F. Gaumer, pastor of the Christian church at Alvin, was in charge and the interment was at the Johnson cemetery.
Mrs. Watson had been ill for several months, due to old age and its infirmities and passed away in the same house that she had called her home for more than fifty years. Mrs. Watson was apparently in her usual state of health when she arose Saturday, until a few minutes before noon, when a sudden attack of heart trouble caused her to fall over, death resulting in a few minutes.
"Grandma" Watson, as she was known all over that community, was a native of Kentucky. She was born in Hardin county, Sept. 9, 1833, the daughter of John R. and Nancy Atkinson Gritton, and came with them to this county in 1841. They settled in the locality north of the city where she had always lived. Sixty years ago she became the wife of Francis Watson, a pioneer's son. The husband died thirty-one years ago and since that time, with the assistance of two of her sons, Mrs. Watson personally managed the farm. She was the mother of seven children, two of them dying in infancy. The surviving children are: Mrs. Nancy DeMoss, Mrs. Sarah Ann Smith, Mrs. Mattie I. Moss and William and John F. Watson.

Pioneer resident died yesterday.
Mrs. Ann Watson, resident of Vermilion county since 1841, passed away at her home.
Mrs. Ann Watson, known to many of her friends and acquaintances as "Grandma" Watson, passed away yesterday morning, April 6, 1918, at 11:10 o'clock. The death of Mrs. Watson who was one of the oldest pioneer residents of Vermilion county, occurred at her home, nine miles north and one-half mile west, of Danville. She passed away in the house in which she had lived for more than a half century.
While Mrs. Watson had been in ill health for some time, due to the infirmities of old age, her death was unexpected and came with startling suddenness to her relatives and wide circle of friends. She was apparently in her usual health when she arose yesterday morning but was stricken with an attack of heart trouble shortly before 11 o'clock and died within a few minutes.
Born in Kentucky
Ann Gritton was a native of Kentucky, and was born in that state on Sept. 9, 1833, the daughter of the later John R. and Nancy Atkinson Gritton, pioneer residents of that state. When only eight years old the deceased came to Vermilion county with her parents, and settled on a farm in the vicinity in which her death occurred. That was in 1841, when Indians roamed the prairies of this state, and Danville was a village of less than 100 inhabitants.
Ann Gritton was united in Marriage to Francis Watson, a member of a pioneer family, more than sixty years ago, and they went to housekeeping on the farm where the aged woman died yesterday. Seven children were born to Mrs. Watson. Two died in infancy. The surviving children are: Mrs. Nancy DeMoss, Mrs. Sarah Ann Smith, Mrs. Mattie I. Moss, William and John F. Watson.
The husband died thirty -one years ago, and since his death the widow with the assistance of the sons, had conducted the farm. Mrs. Watson was an estimable woman and was greatly beloved by her neighbors and friends. She had always been active in church work and in sickness or death was among the firs to visit the afflicted home and offer her services.
Funeral Monday.
The funeral of the aged woman will be conducted Monday morning at 11 o'clock, old time, the residents of the neighborhood in which she lived having failed to adopt the new time. Rev. Clay F. Gaumer, pastor of the Alvin M.E. church, will have charge of the services, which will be held from the Union Chapel, and the body will be laid to rest in the Johnson cemetery.

An old feud, growing out of the renting of a farm in Vermillion County, terminated at Danville, on the 19th, between David Clem and Milo Gritton, by the former cutting the latter's throat, he dying instantly, Clem receiving a gash in his bowels which is liable to prove fatal. Clem has resided in that county for a great many years, and was at one time a candidate for Sheriff, though of late years his influence has been on the wane.

About 7 o'clock, on the morning of the 15th, a fight took place near Danville, in which David Clem cut Miles Gritton's throat from ear to ear, from which he died immediately. Clem was also stabbed in the bowels, whether by himself or Gritton is not known. He will probably die from the effects of his wounds. It seems Clem had rented a farm to Gritton and they had a difficulty in dividing the fruit, and the rencontre was occasioned by a lawsuit regarding this division.

News paper article. Family is unfortunate. John Gritton, living west of town has numerous afflictions. John Gritton, who resides west of Danville, is certainly having his full share of troubles. His wife died a little over a year ago and a few months afterward he suffered heavy loss by fire. Last week his eldest daughter, age 13, who was so much help in keeping house and caring for smaller children in the family died from the effects of typhoid fever. Although quite young, Bessie succeeded in keeping the family together and at the same time attended school. Besides the father, she leaves a little sister and three younger brothers, Homer friends extend the family profound sympathy.

Obituary.
(Contributer)
Bessie May Gritten was born March 24, 1890, near Danville and died at 9 o'clock, Oct. 5, 1903, aged 13 years, 6 months and 11 days. She was the eldest daughter of John Gritten. Three weeks ago she became ill of typhoid fever and all that loving hands could do was done and her recovery seemed possible until Friday when the disease took a serious turn. Throughout her entire sickness she was an example of Christian patience and fortitude, although her suffering at last was intense until peaceful sleep came to her relief. Her mother died a year ago and Bessie was left to keep house and though so young, kept the family together and attended school, where she was greatly loved by teacher and schoolmates. Always kind and loving, she early evinced a desire to become a Christian and was baptized in 1902 by J.J. Cosatt and has since been a member of Union church.
Besides loving friends and schoolmates she leaves three brothers, Elvin, Earnest and Ross, the latter just recovering from typhoid fever, Grace and her grief stricken father who have the heart felt sympathy of the entire community. But in this sad hour of grief and sadness let us not forget that their has been a happy meeting between mother and child in out beautiful home beyond. We wouldn't call her away, although how much we all miss her. Her noble and sweet young life has been spent and hers is the victory.

Gritton Family Afflicted
Typhoid Fever Victims Taken to Danville.
Danville, Ill., Jan. 27. - Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gritton of Penfield, both suffering from typhoid fever, were brought to this city and were taken to St. Elizabeth's hospital where they will receive treatment. Mrs. Gritton was taken ill nearly two months ago and is very weak and much worn by the disease. Her husband succumbed to the fever and both have been in the care of two nurses, one from this city and one from Chicago. Two children in the family had typhoid fever just before their mother was taken ill, but have fully recovered.
Members of the Knights of Pythias lodge and the Modern Woodmen have rendered very substantial aid during the affliction of the family, but it was thought best to bring Mr. and Mrs. Gritton to the hospital. They were accompanied to this city by Charles Gritton of Covington, father of Mr. Gritton, and A.F. Chambers, Frank Oberlin and G.W. Putnam of Penfield, members of the Knights of Pythias lodge.

Orsmus Vandorn Gritton and his wife, Mary Josephine Underwood, abandoned their three boys when the couple separated. At the time the youngest, Joseph Vandorn Gritton, was age five. The boys grew up in Brightside Orphanage in Plymouth, Indiana. The orphanage put them out one by one as they reached the age of sixteen. Their mother kept their sister, Millie.
Mrs. Josephine Gritton has filed a petition in the superior court asking a divorce from Orsmus Gritton. They were married June 22, 1903, and separated March 24, 1920. She alleges cruel and inhuman treatment and failure to provide. They have three children and she asks their custody. Russell K. Bedgood and L.J. Ledman are attorneys for the plaintiff.

Members of the Anthony Gritton family were victims when two tornadoes struck Indiana on 17 April 1922. Their tragic loss was highlighted in several newspaper articles which covered not only the event but also followed through with articles about the family's recovery and return to Indiana.
Abridged from the Journal and Courier, Lafayette, Indiana. Tuesday, 18 April 1922.
Nine persons lost their lives, many other were seriously injured and much property was destroyed in a cyclone that visited Warren county late Monday afternoon, the terrific storm wiping out the village of Hedrick, six miles northwest of West Lebanon, where four of the storm victims met death, then swooping down on a settlement known as Soul Sweep Corner, two and a half miles east of Hedrick, where three were killed; and finally striking the Ulrich Hunter farm south of Judyville, where two lost their lives.
House Plows Furrow
At Soul Sweeper corner, the Gritton home in which two children lost their lives, was carried 50 feet from its foundation, and left completely shattered in a field. It plowed a deep furrow in the ground as it was swept along by the force of the storm. The body of Mrs. High, whose home was completely destroyed was found in the wreckage. The body of taken to the home of her father, Charles Wakely, in West Lebanon. The bodies of the Gritton children were taken to the Byers home west of the corner.

VILLAGE ALMOST DESTROYED.
TEN DEAD IN AND NEAR HEDRICK -- SOME TRICKS OF THE WIND.
Danville, Ill., April 18. -- Ten persons are known to have been killed and 41 injured, several probably fatally, in a cyclone which swept across Champaign and Vermillion counties, Illinois, and Warren county, Indiana, late yesterday afternoon, doing damage estimated at a quarter of a million dollars.
The little village of Hedrick, Ind., was almost wiped out. Four houses and two churches, comprising a group known as Pleasant View Corner, were razed, and on the ULRICH HUNTER farm, five miles north of West Lebanon, Ind., three houses and many farm buildings were destroyed.
The following list of dead was compiled here:
MRS. ALBERT G. ANDERSON, Ogden, Ill.
GROVER JACKSON, Hedrick, Ind.
WILLIAM GRADY, Hedrick, Ind.
GRACE GRADY, Hedrick, Ind.
MRS. PHILIP HIGH, east of Hedrick, Ind.
MRS. JOHN MARSIE, on the HUNTER farm.
FLORENCE KUNTZ, 14, on the HUNTER farm.
PAUL GRITTON, six, east of Hedrick.
RUTH GRITTON, aged three months, east of Hedrick.
GOLDIE SMITH, 17, Hedrick.
Many of the seriously injured and others not so badly hurt were brought to Danville hospitals for treatment. Danville doctors were called to the storm center after it was reported and worked through the night.
MRS. ETTA HURLEY, who with her 16 year old daughter was alone in her home at Hedrick, was stripped of her dress, but only slightly injured.
The ten months old child of JAMES DOWNEY was blown from the house into a garden and deposited in the soft mud unhurt.
A garage was demolished by the storm at Fithian, Ill., and an automobile carried nearly a quarter of a mile and dropped in a pasture. A barn on the SCOTT PAGE farm was lifted and carried away, but the horses were left standing uninjured.
The barn at the home of THORNTON BAGLER was turned around on its foundation, but remains standing and is little damaged.

At the Gritton home.
Passing to the northeast, the storm exacted its next toll of human life at the home of Anthony Gritton. Paul, aged 6 years and Ruth E., aged three months, were killed. The children, with their mother, and two other brothers, Ivan and Harlan and a sister Helen, were all in the house. Baby Ruth was asleep in her mother's lap and little Paul was playing in the room. The children were carried from the house was was Mrs. Gritton. Baby Ruth was found wedged in a hedge fence and Paul was found dead near the hedge a hundred yards away. The clothes were blown from his tiny body and part of the underwear were buried in his flesh, together with mud and small rocks. The babe was still wrapped in the little blanket, but was lifeless when found by the family of Arnett Byers. The other three children were found in a field. Mrs. Gritton was also blown to the fields, and all of her clothes were blown away. Mr. Gritton and George Hurst, a farm hand, were near the barn and were caught in the storm. Mr. Gritton's foot was broken and he was hurt internally. Hurst suffered a fractured shoulder. They were all taken to the Lake View hospital at Danville.
abridged from the Journal and Courier, Lafayette, Indiana. 20 April 1922.
Many funerals
Funeral services were scheduled throughout the day. The first service was held at 8:30 o'clock this morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arnet Byers, near Pleasant View and "Soul Sleeper's" corner, two and a half miles east of here. Side by side in one coffin lay the bodies of the three children of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Gritton. The bodies of baby Ruth, 3 months, and Paul E., 6 years, were taken to the Byers home following the storm, and when little Ivan, 3 years old, died Tuesday night his body also was taken to the Byers home. Scores of relatives and friends attended the services which were very impressive.
Abridged from the Journal and Courier, Lafayette, Indiana. Wednesday, 19 April 1922.
Hedrick, Ind., April 19. - The survivors in the storm country around Hedrick and Pleasant View or "Soul Sleeper" corner, where eight lives were snuffed out by the cyclone that passed over the western part of Warren county Monday evening, are today arranging for the funerals of the victims. The funerals of three will be held on Thursday, and perhaps more.
Ivan Gritton, another son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Gritton, residing in the Pleasant View neighborhood, succumbed to injuries last night at 8:30 o'clock at the Lake View hospital in Danville. Word from the hospital today was to the effect that Helen, the youngest surviving child, is also in a critical condition. Mr. and Mrs. Gritton and Harlan, another boy, are doing well and it believed, will recover.
Journal and Courier, Lafayette, Indiana. Friday, 5 May 1922.
Woman hurt in storm is dying. Mrs. Anthony Gritton, who lost three children at Hedrick, develops lockjaw.
Mrs. Anthony Gritton, of Hedrick, Ind., who was badly injured in the big cyclone Monday evening, April 17, when two of her children were killed and the third fatally injured, is at the point of death at Lakeview, Danville, Ill., with lockjaw. The anti-tetanus serum treatment seems to have little effect and physicians and nurses hold out little hope for her recovery.
Mrs. Gritton developed blood poisoning a few days after the accident, but the presence of tetanus was not noted until some time afterward. On account of her poor physical condition the disease made rapid progress.
Her six-year-old son, Paul Gritton, was instantly killed in the blow and three-months-old baby Ruth was also found dead among some debris in the field, and a four-year-old son, Ivan, died at Lakeview hospital the next day.

Note from Find a Grave
"The Fithian Hardware Company, of which Mr. Gritten is president and treasurer, has long been recognized as one of the substantial business houses of Vermilion County. Mr. Gritten has ranked among the highly successful business men of Fithian for a number of years and is a member of one of the oldest families of this section. He was born in Pilot Township, May 4, 1884, the son of Thomas L. and Martha (Shank) Gritten.
Thomas L. Gritten was born on a farm in Pilot Township, the son of Labon E. Gritten, who came to Vermilion County during the early days and settled on a farm southeast of Penfield. The Gritten homestead was government land and was purchased at twenty-five cents per acre. Thomas L. Gritten became a substantial citizen of Bixby, where he owned and operated a blacksmith shop for many years. In 1890 he began the operation of a sawmill and thresher at Collison, Illinois, which he owned unitl 1904. He then rented a farm near Hope, Illinois, where he remained until the time of his death in 1906. His widow later married John Watson, and now lives near Danville, Illinois. To Mr. and Mrs. Gritten the following children were born: Earl, the subject of this sketch; Maude, married Henry Baatz, lives at Bennington, Indiana; Ollie married William Pate, lives at Catlin, Illinois; Samuel, lives at Bismark, Illinois; Thomas A., lives at Danville; Myrtle, married Fay Wilson, lives in Chicago, Illinois; and Orville, lives at Fithian.
Earl Gritten received his educaiton in the public schools of Bixby and Collison. He worked in his father's sawmill and early in life became an expert in threshing work. He owned and operated threshers at Hope, Illinois, until 1922, at which time he removed to Fithian. He had served as justice of the peace at Hope from 1912 until 122 and as highway commissioner of Pilot Township for one term. On January 10, 1924, Mr. Gritten became associated with the Price-Plotner Hardware Company, Fithian, as manager. This business was later incorporated as the Fithian Hardware Company and Mr. Gritten became president and treasurer. His daughter, H. Lorraine Plotner, is vice president and bookkeeper.
The Fithian Hardware Company are dealers in hardware, furniture, radios, plumbing and heating fixtures, and are also widely known dealers in farm implements. During the seaon of 1929, the firm sold twenty-one McCormick-Deering threshers, which represented a total of eleven carloads. Mr. Gritten was secretary and treasurer of the Illinois Brotherhood of Threshermen for five years. One of his responsiblities was the publication of "The Illinois Thresherman", a fine monthly paper devoted to their interests. The son of a thresherman, Mr. Gritten has operated engines and threshers for years; consequently his trade appreciates the sound, practical help, advice and service he is able to render through the Fithian Hardware Company, under which name he conducts a constantly growing business.
In 1904 Mr. Gritten was united in marriage with Miss Minnie Vinson, of Newtown, Illinois, the daughter of William and Hulda (McHenry) Vinson. Mr. Vinson died May 27, 1925, and his wife died July 7, 1909. Both are buried at Emberry, Illinois. To Mr. and Mrs. Gritten three children were born: (1) H. Lorraine, a graduate of Joliet Township High School, married in 1926 to Cleo Keith Plotner, lives at Fithian; (2) Vinson, a graduate of Oakwood Township High School, married to Wintress Douglas September 21, 1929, associated in business with his father; and (3) Mervin, a student at Oakwood Township High School.
Mr. Gritten is a Republican and held the office of mayor of Fithian during 1925 and 1926. He is a member of the Methodist Church and is affiliated with Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Collison Lodge No. 713, Danville Consistory, and Modern Woodmen of America.
"Gritten's Grit", a monthly publication, sponsored by Mr. Gritten, is a further example of his unceasing interest in the local merchant and farmer." - History of Vermilion County, Illinois, Volume 2, 1930, Pages 963-965
