Uncle Aunt dies One Hour Apart

Rensselaer --- Word was received here today a niece Mrs Chester Meadows , 560 , Factory Street of the double deaths of her Uncle and Aunt Mr and Mrs William Obenchain of North Judson in the Rensselaer Hospital Monday Morning. According to Mrs Meadows, the couple ill at the hospital about one week died within one hour of each other. The husband died first. Surviving are three daughters Mrs Jennie Cavinder of Valpariso; Mrs Austa Walker and Mrs Otie Walker both of Rensselaer; and son Leslie of Rensselaer. Double Funeral services will be held at the Jackson Funeral Home in Rensselaer Thursday at 2pm with Burial in the Rensselaer Cemetery. Friends may call at 7 pm until time of services Thursday.

WEDNESDAY IN MALLARD
Mallard - Funeral services for Mrs. Lottie Stokes of Mallard will be held Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Mallard. The Rev. Robert Lee Smith will officiate.
Burial will be in Rush Lake Cemetery, Mallard. The Schellhammer-Harris Funeral Home in Mallard is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Stokes died Saturday, Aug. (sic) 30, 1988, at St. Mary's hospital, Rochester, Minn. She was 85.
Survivors include four daughters, Margaret Weller of Mallard, Mrs. Gerald (Dorothy) Johnson of Havelock, Mrs. Leland (Leveta) Conway of Calodina, Minn., and Mrs. Raymond (Beverly) Williams of Webster City; two sons, Roy Stokes, Jr., and Donald Stokes, both of Curlew; 23 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.

Mrs. Neva Pearl Horner, 81, 1265 Huntly Road, Niles, died at 6:15 pm Friday in St. Joseph's Medical Center, South Bend, following a five-year illness.

Born July 5, 1902, in Aix, Ind., the homemaker lived in Niles since 1924, coming from Buchanan. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. On Aug. 23, 1924, in St. Joseph, she married Clarence Horner, who preceded her in death on Jan. 22, 1983.

Surviving are three daughters, Patricia A. Horner, Mrs. Barbara Houghteling and Mrs. Marjorie Reed, all of Niles; one brother, Ernest Price of New Buffalo; two sisters, Mrs. Stella Kleine of New Carlisle, Ind. and Mrs. Laura Dohlman of Kalamazoo; two grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.

Services are 1:30 pm today at the Pifer-Smith Funeral Home, Niles, with the Rev. William Fuerstenau of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation, St. Joseph's Medical Center.

Mildred L. McCay, 91, died Sunday, March 23, 2003, in the Hospice of South Bend. She was a resident of Mishawaka.

She was born Jan. 26, 1912, in Laurel. Her parents were Owen N. and Christine (Nuss) Barker. She was raised by her aunt and uncle, the Rev. and Mrs. W.N. Sherrill. She married Mervin R. McCay on Nov. 19, 1933, in Frankfort. He preceded her in death Sept. 7, 1997. Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Ann McCay of Mishawaka; a son, James O. McCay of Franklin; a half brother, Albert Barker of Rensselaer; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a brother, Lester L. Barker; a sister, Edna Mae Barker; two half brothers, Ora Barker and Donald Barker; and a half sister, Ruth Buettner.

A service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bubb Funeral Chapel in Mishawaka. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mishawaka City Cemetery.

Audrey Eileen Merriman, 84, a lifelong resident of , died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Jasper County Hospital, Rensselaer, Indiana.

She was born in Gifford, Indiana, to the late Ernest and Mabel Scott Nuss. On April 20, 1946, she married Blaine Eldon Merriman in Rensselaer, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are her children, Roger Merriman, Margo Roberts (Steve), Michael Merriman, and Kelly Feltzer (Jim), a sister, Doris Bahler, twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

She served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

SOUTH BEND - Doris J. Bahler, 82, of South Bend, passed away at 8:03 a.m. on Sunday, August 2nd, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Mrs. Bahler was born on July 10, 1927, in Rensselaer, IN, to the late Ernest and Mabel (Scott) Nuss. She had lived in South Bend since 1950. On September 7, 1946, in Rensselaer, she married James W. Bahler, who preceded her in death on May 15, 1991. Her daughter-in-law, Marcia Bahler, passed away on February 17, 2009, and her grandson, Ryan Bahler, passed in March 1995. Three sisters and one brother also preceded her in death. Mrs. Bahler was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of South Bend and was very active with the Senior Bowling League at Chippewa Lanes. She enjoyed her volunteer work with Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary, was past president of the Ladies of the Elks, and was also past president of Speech and Hearing. Mrs. Bahler also enjoyed trying her luck at the casinos and gambling boats. Loveta Luella (Stokes) Conway passed away at the Caledonia Care and Rehab Center, March 3, 2014. She was surrounded with love by her family.
Veta was born June 16, 1924 to Roy and Charlotte "Lottie" (Nuss) Stokes of Mallard, IA. She married Leland Conway, December 11, 1942 in Mallard, IA. She attended Iowa Teacher's College in Cedar Rapids, IA. Veta taught one year in a 1 room schoolhouse, south of Pocahontas, IA. Later, Lee and Veta moved to Texas while he served in the Army Air Corps. After returning to Iowa, they farmed for years there, before moving to Caledonia, MN in 1960. Veta worked many jobs in the area. She will especially be remembered by the students and staff of Caledonia as a very spunky librarian/teacher's aide in the Resource Center at the Loretto Building for Caledonia Junior High School, and as a substitute teacher at St. Mary's School in Caledonia. Veta helped initiate and coach girls basketball in Caledonia in the mid 1970's. She was inducted into the Iowa Girls Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978 as an All State Guard, for her outstanding defensive efforts in 1941. She played for the Mallard Iowa "Ducks".
She loved football, college basketball, and baseball, especially the Minnesota Twins, Chicago Cubs, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. She loved dancing with Lee, traveling, spending time with family, and playing cards. Veta especially enjoyed watching her kids' and grandchildren's sporting events and activities. She was always a very loyal, vocal and proud fan in the stands! She had a sweet tooth and a heart of gold. Veta was a jokester, but also an amazing, strong, woman...a true champion. She instilled the importance of 'family' in her childrens' lives and they loved her dearly. She will be missed by many.
Veta was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, Roy Jr.(Wire) and Don Stokes of Mallard, IA, 2 sisters, Dorothy (Stokes) Johnson of Havelock, IA and Margaret (Stokes) Weller of Mallard, IA and her husband, Leland Conway of Caledonia, MN.
Veta is survived by 1 sister, Beverly (Stokes) Williams of Rockwell City, IA, 2 daughters of Houston, MN, Nancy (Conrad) Tschumper and Carla (Wayne) Fitting, 3 sons, Gary (Linda) Conway and Bob (Laurie) Conway of Caledonia, MN, and John (Sheri) Conway of Hokah, MN. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Tom and Todd Tschumper, Tracy (Tschumper) VanGundy, Sean Conway, Kelly (Conway) Schwartzhoff, Seth Conway, Josh, Justin and Mariah Conway, and Brooke and Mackenzie Fitting. She is further survived by 15 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.
The Conway family wishes to thank the incredible staff and friends at the Buckley Assisted Living and Caledonia Care and Rehab Center.

OBITUARIES
Funeral Services For Donald L. Stokes

Mallard - Donald L. Stokes of Curlew died Thursday, Oct. 27, 1994, at Palo Alto County Hospital, Emmetsburg. He was 62.
Funeral services for Mr. Stokes were held Monday, Oct. 31, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mallard. The Rev. Peter Fransco officiated.
Burial was in Rush Lake Cemetery, Mallard. Military rites were conducted at the grave site by members of the Mallard American Legion Post.
Casket bearers were Mark Schuller, Harlan Sonksen, Arnold Sonksen, Delwin Rettenmaier, Donald Mankle, William Pauk, Marshall Compson and Joseph Hood.
Rosary services and vigil services were held Sunday, Oct. 30, at the Schellhammer-Harris Funeral Home in Mallard.
Donald L. Stokes was born Oct. 19, 1932, the son of Roy and Charlotte (Nuss) Stokes. He attended school in Mallard and graduated from Mallard High School in 1950.
On Feb. 14, 1953, Annette Conway and Donald Stokes were married in Mallard. The couple made their home in Emmetsburg before Mr. Stokes entered the U.S. Army in May, 1953. In August, 1954, he was given a medical discharge from the military and returned to Palo Alto County to resume farming.
The Stokes lived in Curlew all of their married lives. In addition to farming, Mr. Stokes worked as a hail adjustor. Mr. Stokes was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mallard. He formerly served as a member of the Northwest Iowa Telephone Board and he belonged to the Mallard American Legion Post and had served as commander. He was a 4-H leader and a great sports fan, enjoying watching his children and grandchildren play.
Survivors include his wife, Annette, of Curlew; a daughter, Chris Trushceff of Watertown, Minn.; four sons, Dan of Mallard, Ed of Gilbert, Ariz., Mark of Sioux City and Kirk of Glendale, Ariz.; and 12 grandchildren.
Also surviving are four sisters, Margaret Weller of Mallard, Dorothy Johnson of Havelock, Veta Conway of Caledonia, Minn., and Beverly Williams of Webster City.
Mr. Stokes was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; and twin grandsons.

As a young girl she enjoyed ice skating, going to the movies and dancing at the Cobble Stone. It was there that she met her future husband Lee Simon. They were married June 9, 1946, and lived in Odebolt, Iowa. The couple were blessed with two children Sharon Lee and Douglas James.

Barbara graduated from Rensselaer High School with the Class of 1949. Her marriage was to the late Orval W. "Bill" Hudson. Barbara and her husband owned and operated Hudson's Grocery Store and Country Corner Restaurant for almost 50 years. She retired in 1995.
Barbara was active with the Business and Professional Womens Club, and Rensselaer Bowling League for many years. She also enjoyed gardening. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church of Rensselaer. She loved her family dearly, especially her precious grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Barbara is survived by three daughters, Pam (Mrs. Dave) Lakin of Rensselaer, Theresa "Terry" Tatlock of Rensselaer, Kim Nagel of Lafayette; and one son, Mike Hudson of Rensselaer. Ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two granddaughters, one great-granddaughter, one brother and one sister.

She was born on July 13, 1926, in New Carlisle and lived there most of her life. On Aug. 18,1945 in New Carlisle, she married Duane F. Switzer, who survives. William Donald Ferrell, Jr., age 73, of Valparaiso, passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 in Burbank, IL.
He was born in Wheatfield, IN on May 20, 1939 to the late William, Sr. and Della (Snow) Ferrell. William was a former employee of Porter County Highway Department. He also worked on the family farm. William was a lifelong member of the Wheatfield and Chesterton Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, James Ferrell; along with many aunts and uncles.
William is survived by his loving family, consisting of his children: Nancy, Susan, Donald, and Robert Ferrell: twin sister, Beverly Wiegand (Robert) of Valparaiso; brothers: Lester Ferrell (Janet) of Chesterton and Chester Ferrell (Ellen) of Valparaiso; sister, Mary Wiegand of Valparaiso; three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to time of services, Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Graceland Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel, 1505 Morthland Drive, Valparaiso, IN. James Ralph "Jim" Campbell, 85, passed away at 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3, 2014 at the Indiana Veterans' Home, West Lafayette, Indiana where he had been a resident since July 9, 2008.
Jim was born in Gifford, Indiana June 7, 1929 to Ernest J. and Dorothy M. (Timmons) Campbell, both deceased. His sister, Bethel and her husband, James Huff are also deceased. Surviving are four brothers: Raymond (Maudelene), Forrest (Linda - deceased), Donald (Cathy) and Gerald (Doris).
Following Wheatfield High School in Jasper County, Indiana, Jim joined the United States Army, serving June 19, 1947 to Nov. 28, 1948, attaining the rank of Private First Class, until he was Honorably Discharged. His duties included military police (MP). Jim then enlisted and served in the United States Air Force from Feb. 1, 1951 to Feb. 2, 1955, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant, until he was Honorably Discharged. He served with the Northeast Air Command based in Newfoundland, Canada, including Iceland, Alaska and Greenland. He served as an Air Policeman (AP).
After his military service, Jim returned to Gifford where he farmed on the family farm and eventually on his own, until retirement.

Forrest E. "Fuzz" Campbell, age 82, of Rensselaer passed away October 28, 2017 at The Springs in Lafayette, Indiana.
Fuzz was born in Gifford, Indiana, on October 5, 1935, the son of Ernest J. and Dorothy (Timmons) Campbell. Fuzz was a 1955 graduate of Wheatfield High School in Wheatfield, Indiana. He was a carpenter by trade, retiring after 35 years at Ford Motor Company in Chicago Heights, Illinois. He enjoyed being able to work alongside his father helping out on the family farm. An outdoorsman, Fuzz enjoyed time spent hunting and fishing with his family and friends and especially liked fishing at Red Lake, Canada. He was a sports enthusiast, having had much success playing sports during high school and enjoyed playing softball for the Parr Elevator Men's Softball team. Fuzz liked to be active in local events and had worked as an election voting booth volunteer.
On July 28, 1956, in Gifford, Indiana, Fuzz and Linda Lou Green were married. Linda preceded him in death on September 18, 2011.
Fuzz and Linda were the proud parents of three children, Melanie (Klayton Kohley) Wright, Susan (Jim) Phillips, and Mark (Stacey) Campbell, all of Rensselaer; grandparents of Rhiannon Wright, Caylyn (Reilly) Murphy, Cameron Phillips, Ali Phillips, Halston Cempbell and McClain Campbell and great grandparents of six. Also surviving is his brother, Jerry (wife Doris) Campbell of Gifford, Indiana.
Friends may visit with the family at the Jackson Funeral Chapel of Rensselaer on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 from 2:00-6:00 p.m. CST. Services will be held at 6:00 p.m. CST on Wednesday at the Jackson Funeral Chapel of Rensselaer with Richard Stoll officiating. Memorials may be made to your favorite hospice provider or to the Rensselaer Central High School Football program.
