    • Escapes From County Jail By Picking Locks On Window
Leland Carpenter last night proved himself to be a very ingenious gentleman.
Using nothing but a piece of teaspoon and a short piece of wire, he picked two locks, securing the barred widow of his cell in the county jail, lowered himself to the roof of the small porch on the east side, and dropped 15 feet to the ground. This happened some time last night and thus far there is no trace of the fugitive. He left the instruments used in making his escape, but carried the locks away with him.
Carpenter, who is charged with bigamy, was confined in the debtors cell, which is a room by itself on the eat side of the upper corridor. He was thus isolated because of being afflicted with a loathsome blood disease. It was the same cell in which John Christmus, colored wife murderer, spent his last days before being executed in October, 1921.
Sheriff Gray this morning, mailed out a description of the fugitive to police of all neighboring cities. Here it is: Age, 19; height, five feet 6 1/2 inches; complexion, fair; hair, dark brown; tip of middle finger on left hand missing; occupation, automobile mechanic; wore gray carp, ligh shirt, dark gray trousers and black Oxfords.
