This Hamilton Church Cemetery is located adjacent to the "historic" Hamilton Church at the intersection of Chicago Trail and Walnut Road in Olive Township, in Hamilton, St. Joseph County Indiana (just South of the Michigan-Indiana state line, and the 80-90 Indiana Toll Road). It is located South-West of Buchanan, Michigan and North-East of New Carlisle, Indiana.
Hamilton, Indiana was "formerly" known as "Terre Coupee Pairie," and as Terre Coupe, Indiana.
Note: It is said that there are numerous old "unmarked" graves in this cemetery, so they have to be extra careful, when they dig new graves. The oldest record of a burial in this cemetery was in 1830.
The Hamilton Church building was started in 1838. When it was nearing completion, it burned to the ground, and the work had to be started all over again. The new church was dedicated (along with the cemetery), in 1843, entirely free from debt. This church is said to be the oldest Methodist Church building North of the Wabash River.
The story of the history of "The Hamilton Methodist Church" can be found in the Genealogy department of the Indiana State Library (and in the libraries in South Bend and New Carlisle, IN). It states in part:
There is a special American flag which hangs on the wall of the entry of this church. This flag dates prior to 1864, however, due to the fading of the blue field, there is evidence that it had thirteen stars in the beginning which would mean that it is a Revolutionary War flag. The flag was presented to the Hamilton community by George Hotchkiss, an influential citizen. According to the record, the flag was restored by the Hamilton Church Ladies Aid in July 1864. It was carried in Lincoln's second presidential campain. The number of stars embossed on it total 36, which denotes the number of states in the union at that time.
Still on the exterior of the church is a belfry which houses a solid iron bell imported from New York and donated to the church by the Reynolds family (prior to 1866).
Note: This is probably one (or all) of three brothers: James Reynolds (1824-1906), and his wife Nancy S. (Howe) Reynolds, "OR" his brother John Reynolds (1814-1890), and his wife Clarissa (Egbert) Reynolds, "OR" their brother Stewart L. Reynolds (1811-1890), and his wife Cynthia (Winkler) Reynolds. All three brothers are buried here.
