Catherine Shumate Cline's letter to her granddaughter, Sarah Catherine Cline Gritton.
April the 11 1869
Dear Grand Daughter,
I take the present opportunity to inform you that I am only in moderate health at this time but sincerely hope that these few lines will find you well. I wish you would come down and see me the time seems very long indeed since I last saw you. I have heard that you was a bout to get married. If so be careful and try and make a wise choice for if you do not you had better stay single and if you are not agoing to get married I would rather you would come down and make your home at Clem’s where you will be closer to me and where I can see you oftener. If you will come down sure they will wait a week or two for you. If you cannot come send them word to day so that they may look elsewhere for a girl. But do come down and see me as soon as possible for I am very anxious to see you indeed. So with these broken sentences I will close by asking you to excuse this hurried scrawl and allow me to subscribe myself you affectionate Grand Mother until we are separated by Death
