      Joseph Wiley Stanford was the son of Father Stanford (1778-1835) and Mary W. "Polly" MNU Stanford (1785-1854) from Ashe County, North Carolina. Father Stanford (first name unknown, but it is believed to have been Wiley), was born in about 1778 possibly in Isle of Man (Ireland). Please note that Joseph had the middle name of Wiley, Joseph named one of his sons Wiley and Joseph's brother Hiram used the middle initial of W. This was Irish tradition to name the middle name of the sons after the father's first name. Joseph Wiley Stanford married Mary Nancy Phipps in Grayson County, Virginia in about 1830. Joseph Wiley Stanford had only one known sibling, Hiram W. Stanford (1812-1892), who died in Campbell County, Tennessee.

      Joseph Wiley Stanford's only known sibling was:

      i. Joseph Wiley Stanford (born 1806 in Grayson County, Virginia; died 1885 in Mouth of Wilson, Grayson, Virginia). FAG #88440209.

      ii. Hiram W. Stanford (born 1812 in Grayson County, Virginia; died 1892 in La Follette, Campbell, Tennessee). FAG #25852148.

      In the 1840 and 1850 Censuses, Joseph was found living near his brother, Hiram W. Stanford in District 19, Grayson County, Virginia. Please note that in the 1840 Census, Hiram W. Stanford was living with their mother, widowed in Grayson County, Virginia. Their Father died about 1835. In the 1850 Census, Hiram W. Stanford was living with his wife, Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Howell Stanford and their youngest son, William Calvin "Cal" Stanford, age 5. They were also living with Charles G. Taft, age 55.

      In about 1857, his brother Hiram W. Stanford later moved away with his wife and their first child to Stecoah, Cherokee, North Carolina (1860 Census) and later he moved to La Follette, Campbell, Tennessee (in 1870 and 1880 Censuses) in about 1863. Joseph remained in Grayson County, Virginia until his death in 1885.
