    Butch, as he was known to all family and friends, died unexpectedly in his sleep in the early morning hours of March 1, 2013. He leaves behind the love of his life, Kristen Ruiz; his brother, Edwin Kratzer and his wife Teresa; his sister, Colleen Steckel and her husband David; niece, Jenn Malvaez and her husband Christian; nephew, Andrew Burnett and his wife Amy; niece, Sara Kratzer; nephew, Kyle Kratzer; niece, Kayla Steckel; grand-nephew, Kohner Kratzer; and grand-niece, Sara Rocio Malvaez. Butch is predeceased by his parents, George and Edwina Meitzen.

    He will be missed, especially by those he spoiled the most – his cats, his fish and Homer.

    Butch was well known for the exquisite wood clocks he made and for his love of music – composing and producing a number of pieces from his self-built electronic music system. He proudly served eight years in the Army, mostly overseas, where he reached the rank of E5. He also obtained a master's degree in electrical engineering and taught at Heald College in Portland for several years. Butch loved Cubs baseball, bowling and golf. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, holding several positions, including Leading Knight and Exalted Ruler.
