Web Trial To Be Friday At Richmond
Murder Warrant Issued For Prisoner: Rites Are Held For Marcum
    Special to The Leader
Richmond, Ky., June 6 – Willie Webb, 45, who Friday shot and killed Earl Marcum, 28, at the home of Dewey Lakes in the Red Lick neighborhood, today was charged with willful murder in a warrant issued by Judge Vernon Leer and his examining trail set for next Friday in Madison county court.
Webb was arrested late Friday afternoon at his home on Red Lick several hours after he had called the office of Sheriff John McWilliams here and reported the killing.
He explained his failure to come here to surrender to the feat of relatives of Marcum. He had told Sheriff McWilliams that he would be in to surrender.
The shooting of Marcum is believed by officers to have been an indirect result of a fight which Marcum is said to have had with Arthur Webb, a brother of Willie, several years ago.
At the Madison county jail Willie Webb said that Marcum struck him and knocked him down and that “I shot him off of me.”
Funeral services for Marcum were held today at the family burial ground on Red Lick. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Willie Marcum, his wife and one child.

Berea, Ky., June 5 – Earl Marcum, 28, highway construction worker, was shot and killed today while he was at a home in the Jackson Hollow section two and one-half miles west of Big Hill.
A short time after the shooting, Madison County Sheriff John McWilliams at Richmond received a phone call from a man who said he was Willie Webb of the Big Hill section. The caller told the sheriff that he had killed a man and that he would be in Richmond in a “couple of hours” to surrender.
Webb had been employed as night watchman on the highway project now under way near Big Hill. His home is in the Red Lick section.
Marcum, who was a son of James Will Marcum, Big Hill, is survived by his wife, one child and his parents. His body was brought to Berea.
The cause of the fatal shooting had not been learned by Berea or Madison county officers early this afternoon. Contact with residents of the neighborhood where the shooting occurred failed to bring forth any definite information.

Frank and Edith had a cabin at Lake Chatcolet, and spent many of their retirement years there fishing and visiting with friends who also had places on the lake. She was a member of the Orchards Christian Church and was active in their guild.

She spent her last two years at the Royal Plaza Retirement Center, and was very happy with her apartment and all the new friends she had acquired.

    Notes:

    OBITUARY:
Tanner Edward Mahaffey, "Edd," to most, "Little Grandpa," to the lucky, was called home to our Lord October 1, 2007. He was 83 years old.

Dad was born on August 3, 1924, in Saint Paul, Arkansas, to George Almond and Mary (Childers) Mahaffey.

Edd's early childhood was spent in and around Combs, Arkansas, during the years of the depression.

Dad and his family overcame and survived the many hardships of these years. He joined the CCC in 1940, at the age of 16. Dad served at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, as well as three different camps based in Hills City, South Dakota.

Shortly after, in August of 1943, Dad joined the Navy. He served honorably in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. My Dad participated at Tarawa, Saipan, Leyte, Tinian, Kwajalein Islands, Bougainville, Guam, Baker Island, and Nagasaki as well as other campaigns.

Dad received many medals for his service above and beyond the call of duty, and was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1953.

It was during the time between World War II and the Korean Conflict, while in Lewiston, Idaho, on his uncle's farm that Dad met his soul mate, Faye Marie Chambers.

Ed and Marie were married on July 29, 1947, in Portland, Oregon. This union lasted 57 years until Mom's passing in 2004.

Soon after being discharged from the Navy, while rehabilitating from a terrible accident Dad became a barber. He practiced this profession for more than 50 years, retiring at the age of 80, in 2004.

Dad loved interacting with his customers and the atmosphere of his "hometown" style business. Even after retirement dad "set up shop" at his home in order to remain close to some of his loyal friends and customers.

My dad's greatest gift to his family was his sobriety of more than 38 years. These years allowed for the most gentle, loving, caring aspects of his being to flourish and to be shared with those who knew and loved him. It also was during these years that my father gave his soul to Jesus and was baptized. He grew to be very strong in faith.

His generosity and compassion did not stop with the people in his life. He could not turn away the opportunity to help anyone of the four-legged variety either. Dad spoiled his, critters, beyond belief.

Dad was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marie, sister, Margaret (Marie) Barkubean, brother, George Mahaffey Junior, and grandson, Marc David "Marco" Mahaffey.

My father is survived by two sisters, Sue Beardsley, Kennewick, WA, Laura Aunt Em Hurst, Inkster, MI., brother, Denver Mays of Ozark, AR, daughter, Anna Johnson of Everett, WA, son, Michael Edward, (Teddie) Mahaffey, Pasco, WA, brother-in-law, Pat (Shirley) Chambers, Moses Lake, WA, four grandchildren, Michelle Mahaffey Coffman, Spokane, WA, Nikole Lamb-Gerds, (Tim), Pasco, WA, Julie Johnson Potier, Everett, WA, and Danny Johnson, Everett, WA, 11 great-grandchildren, Mikey, Ellie, Anthony, Marco, Davina, Morgan, Carlee, Brock, Karli P., A.J., and Tanner Allen Gerds, his namesake, whom he awaited the arrival of with remarkable enthusiasm. Dad also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins, here and in Arkansas.

Dad also leaves behind a very close and dear friend, Katherine "Dolly" Kultgen, Othello, WA.

Dad's kindness, generosity, enthusiasm for life and contagious smile will be sorely missed.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, October 4, 2007, at Mueller's Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union St., in Kennewick, WA.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 5th, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Faith Assembly Church, 1800 N. Road 72 Pasco, Washington, with graveside services to follow at Mueller's Desert Lawn Memorial Park on the corner of 10th Avenue and Union Street in Kennewick, WA.

Poisons Four Others and Slashes Throat
Clinton, May 30 (AP) – Six-year-old Jerry Watson died of poisoning in a hospital here today and Sheriff Everett Stambaugh declared the boy’s mother, Mrs. Ida Watson, 34, had given him and her four other children poison capsules and then slashed her throat with a butcher knife.
Jerry Watson died shortly after he was carried to the hospital. The other four, Marie, 16; Bobbie, 14; David, 12, and Joe, 9, were reported improving after emergency treatment.
The mother was reported recovering from a deep wound in her throat.
Stambaugh said the eldest, Marie, told him she became suspicious when her mother called them into the house and made them take two capsules apiece, saying it was “quinine for malaria.”
Jerry was stricken ill quickly and Marie picked him up and ran for the hospital seven blocks away, the other children following here. They all collapsed as Marie was pouring out her story to a staff physician.
“Mrs. Watson was found bleeding and incoherent in the tourist cabin where the family was living,” Stambaugh continued. “She was persuaded to lay down her knife and be taken to a hospital.”
The sheriff said he found an unsigned, unaddressed not in the cabin which said, “you have your good time. I will take the children with me.”
Police Chief J.R. Greer quoted the father of the family, Duke Watson, unemployed oil worker, as saying he knew of no reason for his wife’s act.
Watson left the family shortly after noon to attend a baseball game with an old friend.
Stambaugh said he would turn the case over to the county attorney tomorrow.
