943 | Stella Mae Lucas, 91, of rural Sperry, died at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1992, at Burlington Medical Center. Born June 29, 1901, at Davenport, she was the daughter of Frank and Martha Sommerfeld Ruschill. She married Harry C. Lucas on Feb. 12, 1921, in Dodgeville. He died June 26, 1990. She was a homemaker and a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ and its Ladies Guild and a 50-year member of Bell Rebekah Lodge in Sperry. Survivors include five sons, Allan Lucas of Crawfordsville, Wilbur Lucas of Montrose, Lloyd Lucas of Burlington, Russell Lucas of West Burlington and mMrvin Lucas of Thomas, Ill.; three daughters, Marcille Walker of Burlington and Erma Baker and Shirley Granaman, both of Sperry; two sisters, Beatrice Mehmken of Sperry and Hattie Nelson of Galesburg, Ill; 23 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 14 step great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a step great-great-grandchild. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, two brothers and a sister. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Lunning Chapel. 944 | Suicide suspected in man’s death The Hawk Eye Authorities found the body of an apparent suicide victim early today in his Burlington home. Ralph H. Wunnenberg, 91, 2624 Florence Ave., was found in his basement around 1 a.m. according to the Des Moines County Sheriffs Department. He died of a gunshot wound to the head. It appeared to be self-inflicted, according to the department, which is investigating the death along with Des Moines County Medical Examiner Dr. Eugenio Torres. The department didn’t release any other information on the suicide, including who reported it. Torres couldn’t be reached for comment today. An ambulance was dispatched to Wunnenberg’s resident at 12:48 a.m., but didn’t make transport to Burlington Medical Ceneter. Hawk Eye, Burlington, Iowa. Friday, 5 February 1993. 945 | The Burlington Hawkeye - February 26, 2003 Ella Ping Ella V. Ping, 92, of Mediapolis, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at the Prairie Ridge Care and Rehab Center in Mediapolis. Born March 24, 1910, at Northfield, she was the daughter of Peter and Ida Wunnenburg Schmidt. She married Joe Merle Ping Sept. 14, 1940, in Mediapolis. He died Feb. 9, 1966. She attended Pegtown Country School and worked at various jobs in Mediapolis as well as did housecleaning work. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and WELCA. Survivors include three nieces, Arvilla Kelley and Clarice Sullivan, both of Mediapolis, and Betty Jarman of Schaumburg, Ill.; and one nephew, Keith Niehaus of Iowa City. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, her twin sister, and another sister. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis. There will be no family visitation. 946 | The Burlington Hawkeye 10/29/2003 Adrian Mellinger Adrian Joseph Mellinger, 84, of Sperry, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Prairie Ridge Care Center in Mediapolis. Born June 7, 1919, in Mediapolis, he was the son of Crieger and Freida Casper Mellinger. On Nov. 21, 1946, he married Genevieve Thomes in Mediapolis. She died Jan. 21, 1999. Mr. Mellinger farmed in Des Moines County his entire lifetime. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of the Mediapolis American Legion and Kingston United Methodist Church. He enjoyed horses and going to horse shows and pulls. Survivors include one son, Steve Mellinger of Sperry; two daughters, Connie Ralston of Burlington and Debbie Kennedy of Yarmouth; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Howard Mellinger of Sperry. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Mellinger will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home, with the Rev. 947 | The Burlington Hawkeye, 29 January 1996 Edna Crocker Edna Crocker, 94, of Mount Union, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 1996, at Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield. Born on June 12, 1901, near Winfield, she was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Schenk. On March 18, 1920, she married Lloyd Crocker in Mount Union. He died Jan. 30, 1975. Mrs. Crocker graduated from the first graduating class of Mount Union High School. She taught for one year at Hickory Grove. She and her husband farmed north of Mount Union until their retirement. She was a 50-year member of O.E.S. No. 440 at New London, a former member of the White Shrine in Mount Pleasant and an active member of Mount Union United Methodist Church. Survivors include one son, Ronald Crocker of Mount Union; one daughter, Wanda Helphrey of Mount Pleasant, six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph Schenk of Mount Union and Carl Schenk of Winfield; and one sister, Myrtle Hazen of Mount Pleasant. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. 948 | The Burlington Hawkeye, February 22, 2002 Ralph Schenk Ralph Everett Schenk, 84, of Mediapolis, formerly of Mount Union, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born March 10, 1917, in Mount Union, he was the son of William and Elizabeth Gilleart Schenk. He married Ruth Maxine Johnson on Nov. 30, 1938, in Davenport. She died March 3, 1962. He married Fern Baker on Dec. 30, 1982, in Mount Union. Mr. Schenk was a graduate of Mount Union High School and a lifelong farmer. He loved animals. He raised registered collies and Australian shepherds and also raised and sold horses. He owned a race horse named Mount Union Doll. He enjoyed calling the KBUR Trading Post, gardening, traveling and dancing. He traveled to the Coliseum in Davenport to dance to big bands. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Randy Schenk of Burlington, Dennis Schenk of West Burlington and Roger Schenk of Honolulu; one daughter, Roberta Berdo of Iowa City; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl Schenk of Winfield; one sister, Myrtle Jones Hazen of Mount Pleasant; nieces and nephews. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters. Visitation will begin at noon Sunday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Schenk will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Mount Union Methodist Church, with Pastor Bob Hary officiating. She was born Dec. 10, 1872, in Des Moines County, the daughter of Cyrus and Arminda Latta Green. In 1893 she married David H. McCahan. He died in 1929. On May 8, 1953, she married Charles B. Cornic. The couple lived in Mt. Union until his death on Oct. 10, 1957. She made her home in Morning Sun since that time. Surviving is one son, Walter McCahan, Kingston; one grandson, Mrs. Goldine Dravis, Wever, and three great-grandchildren.
