    Fred C. Wunnenberg, Sperry, Ia., retired farmer, died at Burlington hospital at 2 o’clock this afternoon following an illness of five years. He was admitted to the hospital only a few minutes before he died.
    He was a life resident of Des Moines county. He was born in this county 79 years ago, Feb. 17, 1962. He was a member of Zion Evangelical church of Latty.
    Surviving are his widow; three sons, Ralph of Sperry, Alfred of Burlington and Vernon of Florida; four daughters, Mrs. Roy Anderson and Mrs. Clarence Thomes, Sperry, Mrs. Elmer Ruschill, Burlington, and Mrs. Chester McKeown of Mediapolis; one brother, Otto, of Sperry; two sisters, Mrs. Louis Malchow of Kingston and Mrs. Herbert Edmonds, Sperry; and seven grandchildren. Two sons preceded him in death.
    The body is at Progh’s chapel. Rites will be set later.

    He was a pioneer aviator, a retired aircraft mechanic and pilot and an Army veteran of World War I. He was a Protestant, a member of Veterans of World War I, OX-5 Club, and Antique Airplane Assn.
    Surviving: Two brothers, Alfred, Burlington, with whom he made his home, Ralph, Burlington; one sister, Mrs. Roy (Alice) Anderson, Sperry; a number of nieces and nephews.

    Bring Home Body of H. Wunnenberg. Young Hero Who Was Shot Through Lung In France Will Be Buried Here. Fred C. Wunnenberg of Sperry, Ia., received a telegram announcing the arrival of his son's body in Hoboken and the remains will be brought to Burlington and laid to rest. Private Herbert O. Wunnenberg was killed in France. It was the drive when the Yanks were pushing forward close on the heels of the retreating Hun. Private Wunnenberg was among the first. A bullet pierced his lung and he fell to the ground. When the ambulance drove up Private Wunnenberg stood on his feet despite the fact that he was fatally wounded, according to letters received by his father from the soldiers who were on the battlefield at the time. The young man was taken back to the hospital where he passed away, after battling for life for six days. He made the supreme sacrifice and died a hero. Private Wunnenberg was a member of Company C, 139th Infantry. When the body arrives here a military funeral will be arranged, and he will be laid to rest with full military honors.

    Send soldier’s body. Remains of Hugo [typo] Wunnenberg on way to Burlington. A telegram was received by B.A. Prugh [funeral director], Wednesday night, stating that the body of Private Herbert O. Wunnenberg, Burlington soldier who died in France, would leave Jersey City this morning at 9 o’clock under military escort, and would be sent to Burlington via Chicago.
    Private Wunnenberg was wounded in battle and died later in a hospital. The arrangements for the funeral will be made after the body reaches Burlington.

    Soldier buried at Latty. 600 attend services for Private H. O. Wunnenberg. Six hundred people attended the funeral of Private Herbert O. Wunnenberg, held at the Lutheran church at Latty Sunday morning at 10.30 o’clock, to do honor to the memory of the Latty soldier who was killed in France.
    Thirty troopers from the Burlington cavalry, Mediapolis American Legion men and others filled the church. The cavalry men left Burlington at 9 o’clock in the morning for the services.

    Cavalry goes to Latty on Sunday. Military funeral for Private Herbert O. Wunnenberg. Cavalrymen of Burlington will go to Latty, Ia., on Sunday morning, and will have charge of the military funeral at that place for Private Herbert O. Wunnenberg, World war soldier, who met death in France.
    The remains arrived in Burlington last night.
    Captain George B. Little, of the troop, issued orders today that the members of the troop, mentioned below, shall report at the armory on Sunday morning at 8 o’clock for the purpose of getting their equipment which will be used on the trip. Men without cars will be taken to the stables in machines which will be available and promptly at nine o’clock, the cavalrymen, mounted, will leave the Fair grounds and make a start for Latty. The funeral is at 10:30 o’clock Sunday morning.

    She was a homemaker and confirmed into Latty Lutheran Church.
    Survivors include a son, Orville Anderson of Sperry; a grandson, Garry Anderson of Mediapolis; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alfred Wunnenberg and Ralph Wunnenberg, both of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.
    Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a son, three sisters and two brothers.
    Visitation will be Sunday, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home, Mediapolis.
    The funeral for Mrs. Anderson will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hagele and Honts, with the Reverend Lexie Kirkpatrick officiating. Burial will be in Kossuth Cemetery.
    A memorial has been established for the Des Moines Health Center.

    The former Minnie Wunnenberg was born Oct. 14, 1989, at Sperry, Iowa, and was married there in 1920 to Chester A. McKeown. They lived in Mediapolis, Iowa, and in New Mexico, and Mrs. McKoewn came to Darien after the death of her husband in New Mexico in 1952.

    Ralph Wunnenberg, 91, 2674 Florence Ave., died at 12:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 1993, at home.
    He was born Feb. 6, 1901, in Sperry, the son of Fred and Anna Reiman Wunnenberg. He was a farmer and an electric assembler at the Burlington Instrument Co.
    He belonged to the Zion United Church of Christ and the Moose Lodge. On Nov. 30, 1932, he married Daisy Irene Pforts in Burlington.
    Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Shirley m. Dorsey of Burlington; a son, Darwin Wunnenberg of Phoenix, Ariz.; three granddaughters; a grandson; two great-granddaughters; three great-grandsons, and a brother, Alfred Wunnenberg of Burlington. He was preceded in death by a son.
    The funeral for Mr. Wunnenberg will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Prugh’s Chapel with the Rev. Gary Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Prugh’s Funeral Home from 2:30 to 4 p.m. today.
    A memorial has been established for the Zion United Church of Christ.

    Suicide suspected in man’s death
    The Hawk Eye
    Authorities found the body of an apparent suicide victim early today in his Burlington home. Ralph H. Wunnenberg, 91, 2624 Florence Ave., was found in his basement around 1 a.m. according to the Des Moines County Sheriffs Department. He died of a gunshot wound to the head. It appeared to be self-inflicted, according to the department, which is investigating the death along with Des Moines County Medical Examiner Dr. Eugenio Torres. The department didn’t release any other information on the suicide, including who reported it.
    Torres couldn’t be reached for comment today.
    An ambulance was dispatched to Wunnenberg’s resident at 12:48 a.m., but didn’t make transport to Burlington Medical Ceneter.

    Alfred Frederick Wunnenberg, 88, of Burlington, died at 5:15 a.m. Friday, March 19, 1999, at his home.
    Born March 10, 1911, in Sperry, he was the son of Fred Chris and Anna Mary Reimann Wunnenberg. On June 30, 1932, he married Wilma Marie Schuler in Burlington.
    Mr. Wunnenberg was a retired truck driver for Dohrn Transfer.
    He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Burlington.
    Survivors include his wife; two granddaughters, Karen Hogberg of Galesburg, Illinois, and Cheryl Scott of Rockford, Illinois; and three great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, four sisters and one daughter.
    Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday in Prugh's Chapel.
    The funeral for Mr. Wunnenberg will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Zion United Church of Christ, with the Reverend Gary Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

    Evelyn Grace Thompson, 93, of Burlington died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014 at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born Dec. 1, 1920, at home near Newport, she was the daughter of Chester Alan and Minnie Clara Wunnenberg McKeown. On Jan. 1, 1941, she married Kenneth "Ken" Thompson in Northfield, and he died Sept. 30, 2003.
    Mrs. Thompson and her husband farmed and raised their family in Northfield. They sold the farm and traveled and volunteered with group homes for youth in Iowa and Texas.
    She graduated in Mediapolis High School and Burlington Business College, was a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis and attended Heritage Baptist Church in Burlington. She was a member of several Bible study groups.
    Survivors include one son, Lee Thompson of Burlington; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and two nieces.
    Besides her husband, she was precede in death by one son and one sister.
    The funeral for Mrs. Thompson will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, with the Rev. Deb Kinney officiating, and family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. before the service. Burial will be in Kossuth Cemetery, rural Medapolis, and a lunch gathering will follow at Apron Strings in Medapolis.
    A memorial has been established for Mediapolis Public Library.

    Warren “Spook” H. Wunnenberg, 47, of Fort Myers, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1992, in Burlington.
    Born Oct. 21, 1944, in Burlington, he was the son of Ralph and Daisy Pforts Wunnenberg. On Jan. 20, 1970, he married Linda Spencer in Miami, Fla. Mr. Wunnenberg was a professional musician for 20 years. He was the Midwest Champion Rudimental Drummer for nine years. He played in the marching band at Burlington High School and, at the request of President Nixon, represented the United States in a rudimental drum championship. For the last 10 years he has owned and operated a lawn care business. He served in the war in Vietnam.
    Survivors include his wife, Linda; two daughters, Rayna D. and Krista L. Wunnenberg, at home; his parents, of Burlington; one sisters, Shirley Dorsey of Burlington; and one brother, Darwin Wunnenberg of Phoenix, Ariz.
    Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Prugh’s Chapel. The funeral for Mr. Wunnenberg will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Prugh’s Chapel. The Rev. Gary Chapman will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
