| 440 | Death Comes To Charles Cessna Prominent Farmer Succumbed to Pneumonia Christmas Night Charles Milton Cessna, 59 years old, prominent farmer residing on the Williams road eight miles southwest of Bedford, died Christmas night at 10:55 o'clock at his home following an illness since Saturday from pneumonia. The deceased was a native of Illinois having been born at Homer on January 20, 1869. He was a son of William and Lucinda Martin Cessna. He is survived by the widow, two sons, Charles Russell Cessna, of South Charleston, Ohio and William H. Cessna of this county; two daughters, Mrs. Howard Morrison, of Homer, Ill., and Mrs. Harry J. Finch, of Metz, Mo., two sisters, Mrs. martin Current, of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. H.H. Price of Danville, Ill.; three half sisters and one half brother. He belonged to the Methodist Episcopal church and was a member of the masonic and Modern Woodmen lodges. Hall, Civil war veteran, father of Mrs. Fred Hardin of this city died at 5:15 yesterday evening at his home in Danville, after an illness of kidney trouble and a complication of diseases. At the time of his death he was 83 years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Hardin are now in charge of the Jefferson café, Urbana. They spent Sunday in Decatur and did not learn of Mr. Hall's death until 10 o'clock last night. Funeral arrangements have not been made. Interment will be made in G. A. | 442 | Death Comes To Mrs. F.D. Royce Beloved Danville Church Woman Died At 2;15 o'Clock This Morning. Many Danville People were grieved today when it became known that Mrs. Bertha Gritton Royce had died at 1:15 o'clock this morning at her home on the Shakertown pike about three miles from Danville. Mrs. Royce, one of Danville's best known women, had been in failing health for several months. Although her death was not unexpected, it was received as a distinct shock to this community. Mrs. Royce was one of the finest women in Danville's church and home life. A member of the Christian church here, she took an active part in the missionary society and other church affairs. She lived in Boyle county from the past five years, having come here in 1934. She was born May 17, 1888, in Mercer county, Ky. Her marriage to Dr. F.D. Royce, prominently known farmer of Boyle county, took place June 15, 1909. Mrs. Royce, besides her husband, is survived by three daughters, Mrs. W.E. Chadderdon, of Baton Rouge, La., Mrs. John R. Stock, of Louisville, and Mrs. D.C. Murphy, of Danville; one son, F. David Royce; and three sisters, Mrs. Holman Hogue, of Mercer county; Mrs. H.D. Ransdell, of Lincoln county, and Mrs. Hugh Ison, of Mercer county. Funeral services for Mrs. Royce have been set for 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Christian Church. Dr. M.A. hart, the pastor, will have charge of the rites. Burial will be in the Harrodsburg cemetery. The Advocate-Messenger, Danville, Kentucky. | 443 | Death Occurs At The County Home Mrs. Mary Gritton, an aged inmate of the county home, passed away about 9 o'clock last night after a lingering illness. Senility is assigned as the cause of her death. Mrs. Mary Gritton was born in Ohio about seventy-five years ago. She had made her home in and near this city during the greater part of her life, residing a part of the time with a daughter in this city and at other times with a daughter in Illinois. She is survived by three children, Mrs. Clara Lambert, residing near Eliza, Ill, and Tomas and Norman Gritton, both of Cedar county. | 444 | Death of an old citizen. Correspondence Danville News. We are sad to state the fact of the death of David Cosat, familiarly known as "Uncle Davey", which occurred last Friday at 2 o'clock p.m. The funeral was preached at Union Church last Sunday, to a large and attentive audience, by Rev. Oscar B. Gravat, from the 19th Psalm and 11th verse "Morever is thy servant warned, and in keeping of them there is great reward." To attempt to give even an outline of the sermon would seem to be a utter failure on my part, so that I will only say that he dwelled on the w9th Psalm some time and then turned to the precious promises contained in the 21st chapter of Revelations. After the funeral sermon the Rev Hubbard spoke a few words to the afflicted family, and the casket was opened for the friends to take a last look at the remains, then it was conveyed to the wagon by the pall bearers, and was taken to the Fairchild Graveyard for interment. Owing to some misunderstanding not as many followed as intended. The community joins in sympathy for the friends of the deceased, who have gone on before them. David Cosat was born in Mercer county, Kentucky, October 10, A.D. 1812; came to Illinois in the spring of 1834, where, on January 14, 1836, he was married to Nancy Truax, by whom he became the father of 13 children, 4 sons and 9 daughters, of whom 7 preceded him to the spirit world. Was married again January 15, 1880, to Mrs. Sarah A. Cox, who still survives him. He obeyed the Gospel and became a christian in 1836 in which faith he lived till February 26, 1886 , when he gently and joyfully passed away, aged 73 years, 4 months and 16 day. March 2, 1886. | 447 | Death of James Yeazel Died near Homer, January 13, about 10 o'clock p.m., James Yeazel, aged 70 years, 10 months and 12 days. "Uncle Jim,' as he was familiarly known, was born near Springfield, Ohio. He was married to Mary Maria Spencer, Sept. 7, 1837. They lived happy together until March 9, 1867, when she was called to meet her Savior. In their 30 years to wedded life, twelve children came to bless their union, seven of whom survive, viz: John and William, who live near East Lynn; Abraham and Inez, who reside in Nebraska; and Abigal, Alice and Mathew, who reside in and near Home, all of whom are married. "Uncle Jim" was one of the oldest pioneers. He came to Illinois 48 years ago, locating one and a quarter miles west of Homer, on the family on which he lived until his death. He was quite successful in the accumulation of this world's goods, and has long been considered one of Homer's wealthiest farmers and stock raisers. His residence, a substantial two-story brick, is one of the best in the county. Two brothers, Jacob and David Yeazel, and two sisters, Sidney Crabell and Sally Smith, survive him, the first named sister having reached the advanced age of 90 years and the second 73 years. The two brothers have also reached a ripe age. James Yeazel was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Babb, in May, 1871; two children was the result of this union. He was not a member of any church. His funeral was preached at the family residence by Rev. J.H. Colwell, at 10 o'clock Saturday, and his remains were laid to rest in the Old Homer cemetery. | 448 | Death of Mrs. Peckham Mrs. William Peckham died last evening at 6:00 o'clock at the home of her sister (brother), Mrs. (Mr.) George Ellis, three miles south of Centerville. Mr. and Mrs. Peckham, we understand, formerly resided near Exline but had been in the West and only recently returned. Funeral services were held at 11:30 o'clock today and the remains were taken to the Haines cemetery north of the city, for burial. Peckham occurred Wednesday evening at the home of her brother, George Ellis, south of town. She was born Sept. 10, 1839, her maiden name being Amanda Ellis. She was born in Harrison Co., Ind. She was married to Lewis Miller Jan. 10, 1856, and after his death was married to Wm. Peckham, Sept. 3 (Aug. 27), 1894. She was the mother of eight children, two of whom are living, Mrs. Bever, of Oklahoma, and Elliott Miller of Jamestown, Kan. Both of them were present for the funeral. She was a member of the Baptist church since 17 years old. The funeral was at the Ellis home and burial was north of Dennis. | 449 | Death Summons Mrs. M. L. Yeazel Sunday Morning The Homer Enterprise Friday, March 6, 1925, page 2 Death summoned Mrs. M. L. Yeazel about 9 o’clock Sunday morning. Mrs. Yeazel had been in poor health since 1920 and shortly after she and Mr. Yeazel left the farm west of town, she suffered a stroke of paralysis. She has been bedfast since last Christmas. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 from the home F. E. Birkett, pastor of the Presbyterian church being in charge. Interment was in G.A.R. cemetery. C. A. Morehouse, accompanied by Mrs. Morehouse sang “Shadows” that number being the only music to be rendered. Those carrying flowers were Mrs. J. W. Tudor; Mrs. N. G. Foreman; Mrs. F. M. Conkey; Mrs. Nelle Huff; Mrs. Ralph O’Neil’ Mrs. C. E. Johnson; Mrs. Ray Salladay and Mrs. Fred Hall. Pall bearers were nephews of the deceased, namely: Eugene and Robert Hall; Ralph O’Neil; Howard, William and Kenneth Smith. The following obituary was read at the service: “Mrs. Matthew L. Yeazel, formerly Miss Julia Elizabeth Smith was born at Danville, Illinois, May 3 1859 and died at Homer, Illinois, Sunday, March 1, 1925, at the age of 66 years, 10 months and 28 days. The deceased had been in ill health for several years following a stroke of paralysis and during the past few weeks she had been in a critical condition. She suffered much but bore her afflictions with great courage and patience. She fought a tremendous battle for life itself and only as the end drew near was she willing to admit that she was engaged in a losing battle. All that mortal hands could do was done to ease her sufferings but now she is at rest where there is no more pain. The thoughtfulness of her kindred and friends was very consoling to her and she was indeed grateful for their continued expressions of love and affection. She died as she had lived with a strong, triumphant faith in her Lord and Savior. She joined the Presbyterian church of Homer when a child and continued in active cooperation with its varied activities until incapacitated because of sickness. For years she served as organist in the Sunday school and church. Her memory will be precious to all who knew her and her loss will be keenly felt, not only by the immediate kin but by a large number of friends who knew her only to love her. On October 9, 1879 the deceased was married to Matthew L. Yeazel at Homer, Illinois. Her husband still survives. Four children were born to this union, all of whom are still living except one, Jennie A., who died in infancy. Mrs. Estella J. Havard lives in Homer; Mrs. Nellie M. Davis in Sheridan, Wyoming and Mrs. Lelia I. Johnston near Homer. The deceased leaves also eight grandchildren, namely: Mrs. Ruth Elliott of Homer, Illinois; Helen Havard of Homer, Illinois; Lawrence Havard of Huntington Park, California; Julia Davis and Catherine Davis of Sheridan, Wyoming; Julia Nell Johnston, Mary and Francis Anne of Homer, Illinois. There is too, one great grandchild, Phyllis G. Elliott of Homer. Besides these the deceased leaves to mourn her loss, two sisters, and three brothers, namely, Mrs. Mary S. Poisell, of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Jennie Wamsley of Eagle Rock, California; William H. Smith of Homer; Charles M. Smith of Danville and Harry J. Smith of Taft, California.
