    Hoag Terry Smith Hoag, 70, died January 10, 2013. He was born in Purdin, MO to the late Clifford C. Hoag and Lucille Smith Hoag (surviving). His gifts and love for laughter, camaraderie and nicknames with friends and family were legendary. Terry married his high school sweetheart, Norma Kay Wax, over 49 years ago on July 28, 1963. He is survived by wife, Norma; children, Christopher Hoag of McKinney, TX with grandchildren, Hayley, Hayden, Hannah, Harrison Hoag and Paula (Andy) Pellegrino of Pittsburgh, PA with grandchildren, Samuel, Charles, Alexandra Pellegrino; siblings, Clint (Sharon) Hoag and Pamela Kay Hoag (Tim) Tighe. More than anything he loved time with his family and was so very proud of them. Terry graduated from Jamaica High School in Illinois and continued on to graduate from Bradley University earning a BS and Masters Degrees in business. While at Bradley, he received an Air Force ROTC award as the...OUTSTANDING AIR FORCE CADET IN THE NATION and was elected as the Bradley University Student Body President. Bradley became a life-long friend to him and he served as the Bradley Alumni President in later years. After graduation, he served four years in the United States Air Force. His business career was spent with Peat Marwick Mitchell, (now KPMG), Grange Mutual Insurance, Insurance Ohio, and he retired as President and CEO of Miami Insurance in Troy, Ohio in 2005. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church, Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program, the American Legion and helped with the Boy Scout Program. He loved sports, particularly watching his children and grandchildren participate. Golfing and his dogs were close to his heart but closest was the love of his life, Norma. Family and friends will be received at a visitation at The Linworth United Methodist Church, 7070 Bendtree Road, Columbus, OH 43235 at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2013 with a Memorial Service following at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Linworth United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society, (Relay For Life Pittsburgh, PA) attention team Biggy-Big T.

    Clifford Hoag died of cancer at age 69. He served as superintendent of Fairmount schools for 26 years, retiring in 1973. He often helped provide transportation for students for extracurricular activities and invited them to his home. His accomplishments at Fairmount Grade School include increase in teaching staff, establishment of a hot lunch program, the addition of vocal and instrumental music studies, expansion of the athletic program to include membership in the Little Vermilion and County conferences and membership in the elementary film library. He had been a Fairmount resident since 1947. He and wife Lucille had three children: Clint (Sharon) Hoag, Terry (Norma) Hoag and Pamela (Tim) Tighe. Both Terry and Sharon are deceased. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairmount and the Fairmount Lions club.

    Violet Lucille Hoag, 96, of Fairmount passed away at North Logan Health Care center on October 26, 2016.

    Violet was born on March 31st, 1920 in Purdin Missouri, the daughter of Ora and Maude Smith. She married the love of her life Clifford Hoag on July 6, 1937.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her son, Terry Hoag,

    She is survived by her children Clint (Sharon) Hoag and Pamela K (Tim) Tighe; six grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

    Violet loved her family very much and spending time with family out in Missouri and attending her grandchildren’s events meant the world to her. She was a past member of the Fairmount Women’s club, DanGees, and Fairmount Baptist Church. She would go by the nick names Flower or Glou. Violet loved cardinals and had quite a collection of cardinal decorations at home with her.

    Monday a deal was completed making Orra Smith owner of James Hedges 200 acre farm near Brookfield, Mr. Hedges taking Mr. Smith’s farm laying west of town in on the deal. Mr. Hedges sold his forty acres where he now lives to Atheas Creason and will move to his old farm vacated by Mr. Smith. They will make the change during the next few weeks the weather remaining favorable.

    Obituary. Anna Maude Hedges Smith, the daughter of James Alva and Lucy Cox Hedges, was born June 3, 1889 and passed away in Pershing Memorial Hospital, Brookfield, Mo., Feb. 7, 1976. Preceding that,she had been a patient in White Haven Nursing home and then in Ellis Fischel Cancer Hospital in Columbia. Maudie, as she was called, was born in Jamaica, Ill. and at the age of 5 moved with her parents to Missouri. She married Orra Norman Smith, Sept. 11, 1906. They were the parents of 10 children, 30 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren. Orrie died in 1968 after they had been married 62 years. She is survived by 8 children, 2 deceased, James William Smith, Purdin; Herman Glenn Smith, Meadville, Orra Norman Simth Jr., Chillicothe; Ruth Anna McKenzie, Purdin, Violet Lucille Hoag, Fairmount, Ill.; Frances Lorene Duncan, Purdin, Mo.; Essie Maye Love, Gladstone, Mo.; John Robert Smith, Granit City, Ill. George Alvin Smith was killed in Korea July 20, 1950 and Travis Edward Smith died Feb. 5, 1973. Maudie, a free spirit as one sone called her. Mother was a lover of all people and saw the good tht was in her fellow man. Each person who has come in contact with her came away with a special feeling after an insight into her special nature. She had a great interest in what was going on around her until she became so ill, though in a wheelchair for 20 years, she still could not be called an invalid, she used it like a young boy on abicycle. Her family was at her bedside constantly and such a comfort to her the last few months of her pain and illness. She became a christian as a young girl and was a member of the Purdin Church of Christ. She was dedicated and attended all her life until she was no longer able. Her children remember their childhood as that being as much a part of her life as eating and sleeping. Her sister Essie Creason of Purdin and broth W. M. Hedges of Forsythe preceded her in death, also 3 young brothers and sisters. Funeral service was Monday, Feb. 9, 1976, 2 p.m. at the Purdin Church of Christ. Bro. Bill Hance conducted the service. Music was by Mrs. Shirley Campbell, Kenneth Guyer and Quenton and Emily Smith. Casketbearers were her grandsons. Interment was made in the Purdin Cemetery directed by the Wade Funeral Home.

    From Reflections of yester-years, page 117.: Between 1911 and 1914 William Smith operated the saw and grist mill at Burdin, not only sawing logs, but grinding glour, meal and chop from grain. The family lived for a period of time in the house just north of the mill. It was here in 1913 that his grand-daughter, Corothy (Thorne) Turner was born. William's daughters, Lola, Sophia and Maude were operators in the telephone exchange. Lola recalls that she was on duty when the Purdin School burned. Every drop on the board fell, so she could not answer all the calls. Lola was also a seamstress in the upstrains shop in the Purdin Mercantile. Later she went to people's homes, sometimes a week or more at a time, fashioning new clothes and getting their wardrobes in shape for the new season.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Flora May Smith, 91, were conducted at 2 p.m. yesterday at Brothers Funeral Home in Linneus by the Rev. D.D. Reynolds, Jr. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Mrs. Smith died Saturday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Sam Thorne, northeast of Linneus.
    Flora May Neely, daughter of Samuel and Margaret Mexwell Neely, was born June 23, 1863 in Lewis County, W.Va. She moved to Missouri with her family in 1869. On March 2, 1882 she was married to William Richard Smith who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were four children, the eldest dying at birth ad three daughters, Mrs. Ella Fishback, Mrs. Corda Long and Miss Maude Smith.
    Surviving are four children, Mrs. Lola Brown and Mrs. Sopha Thorne, Linneus, Orra Smith, Purdin and Alvin Smith, Brookfield; 16 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
    Mrs. Smith was a member of the Linneus First Baptist Church.

    James' uncle James Alva Hedges was one of the first five elders. He was also a cousin of Lee Cronkhite (husband of Ida May Hedges) and Edward Ellis (husband of Serona Hedges), two of the other first seven deacons.
