    Lander – Services for longtime Fremont County resident, Rebecca “Jennie” Hedges, 96, who died June 30 at Fremont Manor Nursing Home in Riverton, will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the Chapel of Mount Hope, Hudson’s Funeral Home.
    Rev. Dan Mitchell will officiate with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery.
    Born April 18, 1889 in Waverly, Neb., she was the daughter of Charles and Mary Etta Tosh Dimick. She married Jasper Hedges, April 12, 1907 in Bloomington, Ind. They moved to the Riverton area in 1919 and to Lander in 1934 where she had lived since that time. She was a member of the First Christian Church.
    Survivors include three daughters, Geraldene Dalton and Lorene Rouse of Idaho, and Vivian Harris of Lander; three sons, Roy of Rhode Island, Russell of Lander and Donald of Casper; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her husband and five children.
    Memorials to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.

    LKH Note: From a letter written by George F. Hedges on 11 February 1948 we know that in 1881 William R. and Sarah L. Hedges moved their family from Fleming County, Kentucky to a small farm southwest of Fairmount, Vermilion County, Illinois. In three years they moved to Champaign County, Illinois and then in 1891 they and most of their children moved to Linn County, Missouri.

    Information matches for this to be about William R. Hedges, but I have never read about his being referred to as Uncle Billie or as Billie at all.

    Obituary
    William R. Hedges was born in Fleming County, Kentucky, March 10th, 1841, died October 25, 1925, age 84 years, 7 months and 15 days. At the age of 16 he obeyed the gospel and became Elder in the Church of Christ and remained faithful to the end of his life.
    He enlisted in the Civil War while a young man and served 2 1/2 years.
    He was married to Sarah Lavina Allen Nov. 28th, 1863. To this union were born 9 children all of whom are living, 5 boys and 4 girls. The boys are James A. and John W. of Purdin, Mo., Geo F. o Fairmount, Ill, P.T. Hedges of Natchitoches, La. And Jasper N. of Sidney, Mont. The girls are Emma A. Gardner of Riverton, Wyo., Lucy M. Jenkins and Anna M. Bagley of Purdin, Mo. And Mary D. Wood of Seagoville, Texas. His wife died June, 1916.
    He leaves beside the above mentioned relatives to mourn their loss 39 grand children and 32 great grand children.
    Dearest Father thou hast left us,
    You no more on earth we see,
    But in Heaven we hope to meet thee<
    There to dwell eternally.
    The funeral services were conducted by Elder Potter at the Church of Christ on Monday where a large concourse of friends and neighbors gathered to pay him a last farewell, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Purdin cemetery by the side of his companion, who crossed over some years ago.

    We have a copy of William R. Hedges Soldier's Certificate No.690641 file. In his general affidavit, he writes that in Dec 1861 I received an injury to my left side by being kicked by a mule, while helping to break mules at Crab Orchard Ky the mules back joint struck me three or four times on the lower ribs of the left side causing a rupture of the left kidney so that I urinated blood for six weeks and about the 10th of April 1862 while still suffering from the effects of said injury I was poisoned by eating cheese purchased from the suttler of the region and my whole left side seemed to be affected by said poison and my belief is that my left side being was when I was poisoned the effects of the poison naturally settled in that side and the poison aggravated the results from the injury. An any rate I have continued to suffer from that time to the present with pain in the left side of my head and face like neuralgia and with pain in my left side and hip and spine like rheumatism.

    "This regiment was one of the three which President Lincoln authorized Lieut. William Nelson of the navy, a native of Mason county, Ky., to raise in Kentucky in the early summer of 1861. The day after the August election, Col. Fry with a detachment from Danville, the nucleus of what became Co. A, opened Camp Dick Robinson and three other regiments began to pour in and with a few weeks enough men to fill the four regiments had assembled. The first active service performed by any portion of the regiment was when a detachment of several companies, with a similar detachment from the 3d, was sent to Nicholasville to escort a wagon train loaded with muskets and ammunition from Nicholasville to the camp. In the latter part of October the regiment moved to Crab Orchard and became a part of the 2nd brigade, 1st division, Army of the Ohio. Its first participation in actual hostilities was at the battle of Mill Springs, Ky., in which action the regiment lost 1 officer (Lieut. J. M. Hall, Co.B) and 8 men killed and 52 wounded, which was a pretty heavy percentage in a regiment depleted by sickness and detachments to less than 400 for duty. From Mill Springs the regiment marched by Coffey's mill, Danville, Lebanon, and Bardstown to Louisville and there embarked on boats for Nashville, where it arrived March 4, 1862. It took part in the advance on Corinth, frequently skirmishing and sometimes sustaining loss. After the evacuation of Corinth it pursued the enemy as far as Booneville, Miss. and then returned to Corinth marched via Iuka to Tuscumbia. After a stay of some weeks at the latter place, it moved with the command on July 24, via Florence, Lawrenceburg, Pulaski, Fayetteville, Lynchburg and Winchester to Decherd. Leaving the latter place for Nashville, it marched from there with Buell's army to Louisville. After the battle of Perryville, where the regiment was present though not engaged, it moved with the command via Danville to Crab Orchard, whence via Greensburg and Glasgow to Gallatin, Tenn., Then to Casalian Springs, half way between Gallatin and Hartsville, and there to Elizabethtown. It was joined at Munfordville by the 12th Ky. Cavalry and 13th Ky. Infantry and had a fight with Morgan's rear at Rolling fork; moved thence to Lebanon Junction and thence to Nashville. The Regiment took part in the Tullahoma campaign and was in action at Hoover's gap, Concord church and near Tullahoma, but with slight loss. It went into action at the battle of Chichamauga with 19 officers and 360 men and lost 13 officers wounded, and 160 enlisted men killed and wounded."
    The text goes on with more information, but William R. Hedges was discharged by this time.


    Note: His death certificate states he was born in Rowan County, Kentucky (information provided by his brother J. A. Hedges). His obituary states he was born in Fleming County, Kentucky.

    Mrs. Charles Dimick died at her home, 307 East Tremont street at 4:15 a.m. today, after an illness covering a period of nearly five years. Mrs. Dimick was 42 years old. She leaves her husband and four children, Arthur, Gertie, Jennie and Daniel, all of whom reside at home.
    The family removed here from Fairmount about six moths ago and Mr. Dimich, speaking of the sad affliction today, said that although strangers here, his family had been treated most kindly by the people of the neighborhood.

    Mary Etta Tosh was born Feb. 9, 1864 in the county of Pittsylvania, state of Virginia. She was married to Chas. Dimick Dec. 25, 1884, united with the Christian church about twenty-five years ago and has since lived a devoted Christian life. She departed from this life July 28, 1905 at 4:15 at 307 E. Tremont St. Champaign, Ill. aged 41 years, 5 months 19 days.
    The remains were taken over the Wabash Saturday evening on the 3:15 train to Fairmount where she was taken to the home of Mr. George Hedges and on Sunday morning the funeral was held at Center Point church at 10 o'clock conducted by Rev. Fisher, pastor of the Christian church at Champaign. Interment at Fairmount cemetery.

    MHR note: Ida Cronkhite said (in pink letter of 28 December 1949) she thought that “Aunt Betty” Hopper (Eliz. B.1820) who was found with the William Ribelin Hedges family in the 1870 census, was a distant cousin through the Armstrongs. She cared for her mother who died when Betty was about 25 years old. Malinda Hedges needed help, so Betty made her home with them. She got board and room and one third of the wool. Betty was so shy she put on her sunbonnet before coming downstairs and few ever saw her face. Lonely widowers found her not only unresponsive, but unwilling to talk to them. When 81 and nearly blind, she fell downstairs and died shortly thereafter. She helped rear the second generation and “Uncle Will” said she'd been a second mother.

This letter was in the possession of Anna (Hedges) Bagley, Purdin, Missouri when Mary (Hedges) Reiner visited her in 1940. The heading “at home” refers to the home of William R. and Malinda R. Hedges on the bank of the Licking River at the mouth of the Bluebank, Fleming County, Kentucky, in the part of Fleming County.

    Dear Brothers and Sisters:

    It is with a sad heart I take up my pen to write the sad news of our dear father’s death. He departed this life Saturday, Nov. 28, at 25 minutes after six o’clock in the morning. After a serious illness of 12 day. He suffered more than tongue can tell. He lay in an unconscious state for several hours. He suffered greatly from the time he was taken. The doctor had to draw his water from him. Oh it was so hard to see him suffer so, but it had to be. Rose came to see him; staid several days then went home; came back after he was down. Ike got here after he was dead. Uncle Jesse staid with him all the time. We laid him in the old graveyard where sister Mary was laid, there to slumber till Gabriel’s trump and the voice of the Lord shall awaken the dead from the old churchyard.

    I sent postals to you all when I found he was so bad, but I suppose it was not so any of you could come. He never talked about any of his children, but thought he could not live from the start. We done all we could for him but nothing done any good. He has done paid the debt we all have to pay and we can go to him; he cannot come to us; Oh how we miss him. Mother sits around and looks so sad. I can hardly bear it. She is not well. She send her love to you all.

    My love to you all. Write soon as you all are very close together. I want this letter to be read by all. I would love to see you and talk to you face to face but we are far apart. Yes we are scattered – we are scattered, though a joyous band were we. Now this letter is for one and all of you. Write as often as you can.

    MHR note: Stories told by Ida M. (Hedges) Cronkite to Miriam Hickman. Malinda, daughter of Peter and Mary (Armstrong) Cassity married William Ribelin Hedges. "They used to say 'she lifted the limb of a tree it took two men to lift.' This is the true story. She and a small boy with his mother were hurrying to get home from a storm. Part of a tree blew down and caught the boy and pinned him down. Malinda lifted till the mother could drag him out. Next day two men went to clear the road and it took two men to lift it from the ground. This was my father's mother and he told me he had seen her lift an anvil off the block with one hand. She could weave four yards of jeans then walk four miles up hill to spend the night with a neighbor. When she was seventy, she was still spinning and weaving. The year she was eighty-two, 1887, your grandmother came with her to Illinois. They were two days on the train. There were four sons, two grandsons, and one granddaughter to visit, all in Vermilion County, but hard trips between in horse and buggy days. Then a train to Montezuma, Indiana to visit two nieces. Then to Louisville, Kentucky, where the youngest son met her with a lumber wagon to take her over a corduroy road sixteen miles to his home. Back again to Louisville and then the train on home at the mouth of Blue Bank on the Licking River near Farmers, Kentucky.

    "About a week later she heard there was to be preaching at Slaty Point. This was about three miles away. There she had gone to church all her life. They had no conveyance but hadn't they always walked? So she went. At the church she got sick and they took her to the nearest neighbor and a day or two later she died. She was eighty-two years old. At the age of seventeen she went from her father's home to her husband. She moved from the old house to the new and lived sixty-five years on the same farm."
