Joseph B. Thorne was born in Kentucky, October 30, 1846. When he was four years of age he came with his parents to Linn County. He has always lived on a farm and now owns a splendid farm of three hundred and eighty acres. He was married in Linn County, Missouri, November 13, 1873, to Miss Lucy B. Sutherland, a native of Missouri. They have a family of three children: Mary, born September 13, 1874; Joseph T., born August 22, 1977; William W. born March 6, 1860.

From Reflections of yester-years, page 117.: Between 1911 and 1914 William Smith operated the saw and grist mill at Burdin, not only sawing logs, but grinding glour, meal and chop from grain. The family lived for a period of time in the house just north of the mill. It was here in 1913 that his grand-daughter, Corothy (Thorne) Turner was born. William's daughters, Lola, Sophia and Maude were operators in the telephone exchange. Lola recalls that she was on duty when the Purdin School burned. Every drop on the board fell, so she could not answer all the calls. Lola was also a seamstress in the upstrains shop in the Purdin Mercantile. Later she went to people's homes, sometimes a week or more at a time, fashioning new clothes and getting their wardrobes in shape for the new season.

Funeral services for Mrs. Flora May Smith, 91, were conducted at 2 p.m. yesterday at Brothers Funeral Home in Linneus by the Rev. D.D. Reynolds, Jr. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Mrs. Smith died Saturday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Sam Thorne, northeast of Linneus.
Flora May Neely, daughter of Samuel and Margaret Mexwell Neely, was born June 23, 1863 in Lewis County, W.Va. She moved to Missouri with her family in 1869. On March 2, 1882 she was married to William Richard Smith who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were four children, the eldest dying at birth ad three daughters, Mrs. Ella Fishback, Mrs. Corda Long and Miss Maude Smith.
Surviving are four children, Mrs. Lola Brown and Mrs. Sopha Thorne, Linneus, Orra Smith, Purdin and Alvin Smith, Brookfield; 16 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Linneus First Baptist Church.

Samuel Neely, who died at the home of his son, N.B. Neely, on rural route No.3, January 12, 1916, would have been 86 years old February 10. He was a native of West Virginia, and came to Missouri in 1869, settling in Sullivan county. For the last five years he and his wife had been living with their children, having been at the home of N.B. Neely for about a month.
Other children are Mrs. W.R. Smith, Brookfield; John Neely of Jackson township; Mrs. A.R. Wattenbarger, Wintersville, Mo.; and E.M. Neely, Browning.
Burial is to be made this afternoon in the New Garden cemetery under the direction of M.Y. Rusk.

They were married in West Virginia where all their children were born. Came to Linneus MO area 1869, settling on a farm. 1872 to a farm near Scottsville, Sullivan Co., MO living there 9 years. Aging, broke up housekeeping and lived with children. Mr. Neely died a year ago. She was at son's home, E.M. Neely, in Browning. Services at home, burial beside husband in New Garden Cemetery. Margaret Maxwell, born in Harrison county, Ohio, February 16, 1832 departed this life February 19, 1917, aged 85 years and 3 days. In 1843 she was married to Samuel Neely and to this union eight children were born, five of whom are living, viz: N.B. of Brookfield, E.M. of Browning, Mrs. W.R. Smith of Brookfield, J.W. of Browning, Mrs. A.R. Wattenbarger of Milan. They were married in West Virginia where the children were all born. Turning their faces westward landed in Linneus in 1869. Locating on a farm near there and remained on that farm until 1872, when they moved to Sullivan county on a farm near Scottsville, where they remained until 9 years ago, getting old and unable to attend the affairs, they broke up housekeeping and spent the rest of their days with the children. The husband and father passed away about a year ago. Grandmother was at the home of her son, E.M. Neely in Browning when she took sick, and gradually grew worse until death released her from her suffering. She prayed for deliverance, her agony was so great. Finally she was not, for God took her.
On bread of mirth, and bread of tears, The pilgrim fed these checkered tears; Now landlord world, shut to the door, They guest is gone forever more.
She was converted and united with the M.E. Church, S., while a class existed in old Scottsville, and never changed her membership. She was loyal to her church and loved God, home and family. She was a grand, good woman. She leaves to mourn her departure, those children named above, a goodly number of grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services at the home Tuesday, and remains laid to rest by side of her husband, in New Garden cemetery.
