| 11051 | Samantha Jane Vawter was born February 6, 1841, in Jefferson County, Indiana, and died August 29, 1844, at Fithian, Illinois. On November 10, 1857, she married Levi Marion Hedges at Pine Grove, Rowan County, Kentucky, and died January 28, 1907, at Topeka, Kansas. Levi Marion Hedges was the fifth of eleven children of William Riblan Hedges and Malinda Russell (Cassity) Hedges. During the Civil War, Levi was a sergeant in the Tenth Kentucky Cavalry. In 1862, while Levi and his brother Peter Thompson, were away at war, Confederate guerillas came and asked Pascal Vawter whether he did not have two sons-i-law and a son in the Union Army. He admitted he had. The guerillas then asked Pascal to take the oath of allegiance to the Southern Confederacy, and when he refused, they threatened him with drawn swords, but did not actually harm him. Pascal’s daughter, Samantha Jane and Mary Ann, were living with their father while their husbands were away at war, and it was now thought best that they all move away from Kentucky. Rascal and his wife and daughter Samantha Jane moved to Manchester, Ohio, and Mary An moved to a second cousin’s at Rexford, Indiana, with her small son Thaddeus. William Riblan Hedges may have gone there also, as Samantha Jane added a postscript to a letter he wrote to Mary Ann in 1863. Levi M. Hedges moved his family from Kentucky, settling in Vermilion County, Illinois, in October 1879. Levi was married a second time in 1893 to Hattie Lascher, a widow, but they were later divorced. Samantha Jane is buried at Emberry Cemetery near Muncie, Illinois. Some time after her death her brother-in-law, P.T. Hedges, had a head stone erected at her grave for her and her daughter, Lora or Etta, as she was sometimes called. Levi Marion Hedges is buried at Topeka, Kansas, in the Topeka Cemetery. | 11058 | SAMUEL TURLEY, youngest child of William and Elizabeth (Ribelin) Turley, was probably born in Napoleon, Gallatin County, Kentucky. The 1850 census lists his age as twelve, indicating that he was born about 1838. In 1837 his father had purchased 170 acres in Gallatin, which became the site of the family home. Samuel died in 1883 and, according to family tradition, is buried in the family graveyard on the homestead. An article in the Glencoe News in 1875 said that "Mrs. Grundy" announced the forthcoming marriage of Kate Wilson of Lexington to Samuel Turley, but tradition is that he never married. - After the death of his mother in 1851, Samuel Turley's brothers, Joseph Addison and Thomas Jefferson Turley, were appointed his guardian. They gave an inventory of his share of the estate in 1853. Samuel made his home with his brother Joseph Turley and his family and was known in later years as Samuel Turley, Sr. In 1859, when he was twenty-one, he sold his share in his father's estate, as well as the portion he inherited upon the death of his sister, Lucy A., to Joseph Turley. Samuel Turley was clerk of the Ten Mile Church some years before 1869 and was listed as a school teacher on the 1870 census. He became Common School Commissioner for Gallatin County in 1875, continuing until 1879, and in that year also served as Commissioner of Colored Schools. He taught school in 1875 and 1876. In 1879 the Glencoe News reported that Mr. Samuel Turley, school superintendent and surveyor was registered at the Glencoe Hotel. On 18 August 1879 he was appointed Postmaster at Napoleon and continued in that position until his death. He was enumerator for the 1880 Federal Census, Gallatin County, Supervisor District #4. He also owned a general store in Napoleon. In 1879 he sold forty-six acres to William N. Henderson. From that year through 1882, when times were difficult for many farmers in the area, he was one of the principal lenders, accepting mortgages against personal property in fifteen transactions, sometimes in conjunction with his brother, William Turley. Interestingly, in 1882 William was the lender to Samuel. At the November, 1883, term of the Gallatin County Court, M. H. Lillard and W. 0. Thomas were appointed appraisers of the estate of Samuel Turley, deceased. William Turley was administrator. A sale was held 9 December 1883 of items from Samuel Turley's store. Included were items such as caps, gloves, boots and bolts, which brought a total of $46.21 from over a hundred purchases. The appraisal of remaining items and the balance of the estate, including numerous accounts outstanding and notes, was presented to the court 18 February 1884 for a value of $30,154.34. A list of heirs of Samuel Turley who were named as defendants in a suit over the sale of property, September, 1885, included the following: Wm. Turley, J. H. Turley, Jos. A. Turley, H. C. Turley, Emma Peace, G. E. Peace her husband, Chas. E. Turley, Eulilia E. Broatman, James Broatman, her husband, V/m. H. Turley, Joseph S. Turley, James Leonard Turley, Robert Leslie Turley. Mrs. Mattix remained a widow, rearing her small children to manhood and womanhood on the farm. After her children were all married she moved to Benedict where she lived until her death, which occurred after a long period of patient suffering. All her children were at her bedside except one, who lives in El Dorado. She was a loving mother and was always ready to assist her children in any way possible for her to do. | 11085 | Section Man Meets Death Tolono, Illinois, Aug. 20. – John Kelso, one of the section hands here, died this morning an hour after being run over by train No.51 when it pulled in on the Wabash tracks, where he was working at 9:30. Both limbs and one hip were broken, and a large gash cut in his forehead. Kelso came here with his father from near Homer only a short time ago. No arrangements have been made for the funeral. A large number of the section men were busy on the tracks a quarter of a mile west of the depot. Not hearing the approaching cars, Kelso stepped in front of the engine just as it was within a few feet of him. He was given surgical attention at once by Drs. Martin and Mallory, and it was planned to take him on the local freight to the Decatur hospital, but he died before the trip was begun. The coroner was notified and will hold an inquest. The funeral arrangements have not been completed. The Champaign Daily Gazette, Champaign, Illinois. Monday, 20 August 1917. | Kelso, John Alvin Smith (I2090)

| 11095 | Self-Confessed Slayer Returned to the Macon Jail Three Missouri Counties Today Sought Custody of Ernest P. Pletch May Face 3 Charges Macon, Linn and Shelby Counties Interested in Prosecuting him. (by the Associated Press) Macon, Mo., Oct. 30 – Three Missouri counties sought custody today of Earnest P. Pletch, 29-year-old barnstorming aviator and confessed slayer of his companion in a dramatic mid-air struggle. Pletch, who told Indiana authorities he fatally shot Carl Bivens, 38-year-old Brookfield, Mo., flying instructor after they quarreled while in a plane over northeast Missouri, face possible charges of first degree murder, kidnapping and airplane theft by Macon, Linn and Shelby counties. Prosecuting attorney Fred C. Bollow of Shelby county said a conference was planned by prosecuting attorneys of the three counties to decide which would prefer charges against the youth. Bollow expressed his belief Bivens was killed while in the air over Macon county, although his body was found in a thicket near Cherry Box in Shelby county. Pletch is held in the Macon county jail where he was lodged after a hurried trip from Indianapolis. A coroner’s jury at Cherry Box returned an open verdict today, finding Bivens came to his death by “shots in the head with a pistol by some person to the jurors unknown.” The Chillicothe Constitution-Tribune, Chillicothe, Missouri, Monday, 30 October 1939, page 1. | Bivens, Carl (I2449)
