| 8495 | LKH note; Obituary for Edwin J. Hauser Jr’s father who died when Edwin two years old. * * * * Ed J. Hauser, of Fontana Is Killed In Explosion Ed J. Hauser, 35 years old, of Fontana, died Sunday at the Ramona hospital, from the effects of burns sustained in a gas explosion that occurred Saturday at his new hatchery in Fontana. Mr. Hauser had built one of the most modern poultry plants in the state, and the explosion that caused his death occurred when he entered this plant Saturday evening and struck a match which ignited escaping gas. He was accompanied at the time by his 8-year old daughter, who escaped any serious injury. The cause of the escaping gas was not ascertained. Mr. Hauser was one of the best known poultrymen in the state and considered an authority on the subject, which had been made his life study from early youth. Born in Milwaukee, in 1892, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1915 with honors in a course of poultry husbandry. He graduated the following year from Cornell University, and then came to California. He conducted the first poultry extension courses from the University of California and was associated in the development of the idea of demonstration farms. In 1919 he became associated with the Fontana Farms, where he was the originator of the “Fontana” strain of white leghorns. His work with this company is credited with being responsible for the development of the poultry industry, which has reached large portions, at Fontana. He recently resigned from the Fontana Farms Co., to enter business for himself. Yucaipa News-Mirror, Yucaipa, California. They had four children who appear in census records: Susan born about 1858; son Thomas born about 1851; William born about 1853 and Margaret born about 1854.
