9001 | Mr. Pulliam Dies; Mother of Mrs. Smithers Mrs. Nora Gertrude Pulliam, 81, died Tuesday evening at the Chillicothe hospital. She had been a resident of Purdin until moving to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chester Smithers, Chillicothe, for the last six months. She had been in ill health for three years and in serious condition the last month. Mrs. Pulliam was born Oct. 30, 1890 as Nora Gertrude Buswell. On Feb. 20, 1916 she was married to Charles Pulliam who preceded her in death in 1957. Survivors include a son, Charles Pulliam, Purdin, a daughter, Mrs. Smith, Chillicothe; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Tipton, Holt Summit; and Mrs. Lillian Evans, St. James; three brothers, Thomas Buswell, Purdin; William Buswell, Sumner; and Harry Buswell, Bucklin; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Baptist church in Purdin. Burial will be in the Purdin cemetery. The body is now at the Wade Funeral Home in Browning. 9002 | Mr. Robert Roscoe Planck, 48, of Charlotte died Sept. 30, 1993, at home. Funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Flemingsburg, Ky. Hankins & Whittington Funeral Home is in charge. Mr. Planck, a native of Mayfield, Ky., was a retired IBM Corp. engineer and owner of Planck Landscaping Service. 9003 | Mr. Ronald Alan Merriott, 76, of Lebanon, died Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon. Mr. Merriott was born a twin and one of eleven children to the late Jasper Cleo and Frances Lillian (Frost) Merriott on Jan. 25, 1937, in Lebanon. A lifelong resident of Lebanon, he graduated from Lebanon High School in 1953. Following high school, he joined the U.S. Army. In the army, Ron worked as a medic and served his country honorably. On Feb. 13, 1971, he married Donna Lea Yeazel, in Catlin, Ill. Mrs. Merriott survives. Mr. Merriott was a firefighter, first volunteering for Center Township Fire Department for four years, and then working full time for the Lebanon Fire Department for 22 years. He retired from LPD as a lieutenant. He also worked part time for Russell & Hitch Funeral Home in Lebanon. He was a dedicated family man, and he enjoyed collecting coins and fire department memorabilia. Mr. Merriott was a charter member of the Lebanon Christian Church in Lebanon, and a member of Boone Masonic Lodge No. 9 F. & A. M. in Lebanon, O.E.S. No. 23 in Lebanon, Scottish Rite in Indianapolis and Knights of Pythias in Thorntown. Survivors include his wife, Donna Merriott of Lebanon; two children, Thomas H. (Christina) Merriott and Ronna Lea (Chris) Gordon, all of Lebanon; one grandson, Christopher A. Gordon; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, John Merriott, Ora "Ding" Merriott, Alfred "Beanie" Merriott, Charles "Turtle" Merriott and Donald "Donnie" Merriott; and five sisters, Dorothy Davis, Marthena Red, Charlotte Merriott, Laura "Betty" Hughes and Clara "Shorty" Russell. Visitation is 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 12, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. 9004 | Mr. Sparks. Flemingsburg - Elwood Sparks, 71, 1131 US 68 in Maysville, died unexpectedly at 7 a.m. Tuesday at his home as the result of an apparent heart attack. He formerly owned and operated an automobile business in Flemingsburg. Born in Fleming County on Oct. 11, 1916, he was the son of rev. W.T.S parks, of Flemingsburg, and the late Mrs. Clarice Million Sparks. Surviving besides his father are his wife, Mrs. Mitchell Seithers Sparks; one daughter, Mrs. Carol Spencer of Flemingsburg; a son, Morris Sparks, of Atlanta, Ga.; one step son, Darrell Seithers, of Carlisle; one brothers, Clyde Sparks, of Lexington, and four sisters, Mrs. Edith Mineer and Mrs. Bernice Porter, of Flemingsburg; Mrs. Virginia Schwartz, of Maysville, and Mrs. Christine Harmon, of Tilton; four grandchildren, two step grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Cassity Passed Away in Brookfield, Sept. 20th Mr. Victor Murray Cassity, son of Armstrong and Josephine Cassity, was born January 17, 1875, in Linn County, Missouri, and departed this life, September 20, 1957, at Brookfield, Missouri. He spent the greater part of his life in and near Purdin, Mo. June 6, 1900, he was united in married to Vida Johnson, of Jackson, Ohio, and to this union one daughter, Thelma, was born. His wife preceded him in death in 1903. June 5, 1907, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Bumgarner, who preceded him in death in 1940. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Thelma Molloy, of Purdin, Mo; one brother, Fred Cassity and three nephews; Robert Bowles, Harry Bowles, and Leland Cassity. He has been a member of the Church of Christ since early manhood. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, Sept. 22, 1957, at 1:30 p.m. at the Wade Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Yaden of Blockton, Iowa. Jim Burgess was the soloist. Casket bearers were Manley Buckman, Brooks, Buckman, Loren Owens, Ronald McDonnald, Ray Pulliam, and Roy J. Haley. 9006 | Mr. William H. Reed Retired Engineer Entered into rest on Thursday, July 3, 2008, Mr. William H. Reed, beloved husband of 57 years to Mrs. Lorena Cottle Reed, of Willow Spring Drive, North Augusta, S.C. Surviving with his wife are two sister-in-laws, Gladys Copen, North Augusta, S.C. and Jane Wallace (Charles), Chester, Virginia and several nephews and nieces. Mr. Reed was born in Richmond, West Virginia and he moved from Orlando, Fla. to North Augusta three years ago. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a retired engineer with Martin Marietta with over thirty years of service. He was a member of Midland Valley First Church of the Nazarene and while living in Orlando, Mr. Reed served in various church offices and on many committees. He was a small craft pilot and he enjoyed traveling, golf, boating and fishing. Funeral services will be on Monday at 11 a.m. in the Hatcher Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Brent Van Hook and Rev. Charles Wallace officiating. Interment will be on Tuesday in the Chapel Hill Cemetery, Orlando, Florida. 9012 | MRH note: David R. Hedges wrote from Mason County, Kentucky , 24 October 1859, that Addison W. Hedges Jr. had married a wealthy widow. MHR note: in letter from Ida Cronkhite dated 13 February 1951. Addison W. Hedges died while the Civil War was on. He was living in Texas, and was drafted into the Confederate Army, and died in hospital. After the war, the widow and her two small sons and the 2 older by a former marriage, visited Kentucky. Early in 1880 Father got a postal card saying what had become of the boy. We learned later that Robert, age 18, rode away telling some of his mates that he was going to Illinois. He never arrived, but met with a band of bandits and was murdered in Colorado. Will's wife wrote to my father, 1923, of her husband's death. No children. She was Susie Terrell, and I think they cared for some of her nieces. A.W.'s widow was twice more married, and twice widowed but she died before Will did. She formerly lived on Homer rural route and in Danville. She was born at Farmerburg, Ky., Aug. 15, 1875, the daughter of James and Philora Hitchcock Hedges. She was married to Tom Smith on Aug. 7, 1892 at Homer. He died in 1933. Surviving are two sons, Lester of Metcalf and Leonard of Homer rural route; a daughter, Mrs. Grace Brazelton of Hume; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Danville and the Perseverence Band. 9023 | Mrs. Alda Alice Tattershall Alda Alice Garrett, daughter of J.J. and M.H. Garrett, was born June 27, 1884, and departed this life April 16, 1945, at the age of 60 years, 9 months and 11 days. She was married to C.C. Tattershall, December 14, 1904. To this union two sons were born, Harley Irven of Kansas City, and Herbert Orvyan, now serving his country overseas. She united with the Church of Christ at the age of 17 years and continued in that faith. Those who preceded her in death were her father, J.J. Garrett; her husband, Clarence Tattershall; a sister, Mrs. Lillie McGhee; one brother, Erby Garrett. She leaves to mourn her departure, her aged mother, Mrs. J.J. Garrett of Browning; two brothers, Oca A. and J.W. Garrett, of Browning; three sisters, Mrs. John Hedges of Purdin; Mrs. Ben Peery, of Linneus, Missouri, and Mrs. Homer Bivens, of Denver, Colorado, two grandchildren, Donald Ray and Jo Ann Tattershall; a host of relatives and friends, for to know her was to love her. She was born in this county a daughter of the late Uriah and Catherine Erb and lived her entire life in the Glade Valley section. She was a member of the Glade Reformed church, Walkersville. Survivors include three sons, Charles Wade Hedges, Pasadena; D. Ford Hedges, near this city; Glenn Hedges, Flushing, N.Y.; three daughters, Mrs. David Hoke, this city; Mrs. Bruce Harbaugh, near Walkersville and Mrs. Hanh; a brother, Thomas W. Erb, Peru, Ind.; a half sister, Mrs. Ora Linthicum, Madison Heights, Va. Fourteen grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive. 9029 | Mrs. Alice Kathleen Zimmerman, 89, formerly of Walkersville, died Sunday, Feb. 15 at her residence at Northampton Manor Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Ralph B. Zimmerman. Born Dec. 11, 1914, in Walkersville, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Ford and Violet Sweadner Hedges. A homemaker, Alice was a member of Glade United Church of Christ and a member of the Zwingli Sunday School class. She is survived by a daughter, Doris Flanigan and husband Arthur of Rocky Ridge; five grandchildren, Dwayne Flanigan and wife Carol of Rocky Ridge, Mark Flanigan and wife Lori of Fairfield, Pa., Brenda Miller of Rocky Ridge, Michele Martin and husband Dave of Littlestown, Pa., and Bob Zimmerman of York, Pa.; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Daniel Zimmerman. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Ave., Walkersville, where funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. ALMA AMICK DIES IN HOSPITAL Published: The Charleston Daily Mail, Saturday, June 7, 1958 Mrs. Alma Amick, 60, of 1133 Edgewood Drive, died last night in a Charleston hospital after a long illness. She was secretary of Amick and Miller Inc., a refrigeration supply concern of which her husband, R. H., is vice president and treasurer. She was a member of the Central Methodist Church. Mrs. Amick was born November 24, 1897 at Rupert, Greenbrier County, a daughter of Stonewall Jackson Zopp of East Rainelle and the late Lula Tinsley Zopp. Surviving in addition to the husband and father are three sisters, Mrs. D. B. Hayes and Mrs. Jack Goolsby, both of East Rainelle, and Mrs. W. D. Hobbs of Rupert; two brothers, James P. of Rainelle and Raymond J. of Marietta, Ohio; and a grandchild. Walker Passed Away Sept. 28 Amota Janes Hawkins, daughter of William and Minerva (Cassity) Hawkins, was born October 13, 1876, near Browning, Missouri and passed away at the Sullivan County Memorial Hospital at Milan, Missouri, September 27, 1958, at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 14 days. She had been a patient there for the past two years. September 13, 1900, she was united in marriage to George Walker, who passed away March 19, 1951. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, two brothers, Walter and Albert, and a twin sister, America. In passing she leaves two nieces, Mrs. Alta DeVore, of Browning, Mo. and Mrs. Wilma DeVore of Seymour, Iowa, and a host of relatives and friends. Early in life she united with the Christian Church at Mt. Zion and later when they moved to Browning, transferred her membership to the Christian Church in Browning. 9033 | Mrs. Andrew Erlcson died October 15, at 6:30 a. m. at her home in Everly, her death being caused by dropsy, from which she had suffered for nearly seven years. During this time she bore her affliction with courage and Christian patience. Mrs. Ericson was born at Nora, Sweden, Sept. 11, 1854. She attended school In her homeland and was baptized and confirmed In the Evangelical Lutheran church. She came to America October 7. 1880 and lived at Galva, Illinois She was married Sept. 1, 1881 to Andrew Ericson, who at that tune was employed In a coal mine. They lived In Illinois for seven years, and then moved to a farm nine miles northwest of Everly; later they moved six miles north of Everly and In 1920 they retired and moved to Everly, where they have since resided. Mrs. Erlcson was the mother of nine children, eight sons and one daughter. Three of the sons died In Infancy. One son, Emll, died nine years ago, a victim of the flu. She leaves to mourn their loss, her husband, four sons, Julius, Melvin, William and Elmer, and one daughter, Selma, now Mrs. Klarstrom. twelve grand children and one great grandchild. She was 75 years. 1 month and 4 days old at the time of her death. Mrs. Erlcson was honest and hard working, a faithful wife and a loving mother. Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home and at 2:30 at the Lutheran church. Rev. J. L. Seitzinger, the pastor of the church will officiate. Funeral services for Mrs. Frankie Lee Ballard, 90, mother of Mrs. Vivian Sylvester, chief operator of the Southwest Bell Telephone company office here, was given last rites at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Osterhout fyneral home chapel. 9040 | MRS. BARNWELL WIDELY KNOWN RESIDENT, DIES Highly Respected Woman Passes Away At Home---Funeral Tuesday. Mrs. Ellen Barnwell, resident of this city for the past 42 years, died at her home, 811 South Vermillion street, at 10:50 o'clock, Saturday evening. Suffering from heart trouble for many years, Mrs. Barnwell had apparently been in good health until a few days before her death when her condition became serous. Her husband and children were at her bedside when she passed away. In this city where she had spent her life, she was widely known for her charitable nature and unselfish interests. As a mother, she lived the lives of her children and gave them every care and kindness humanly possible. Her innumerable friends will join in their bereavement. Born In Flanagan. As the daughter of John and Katherine Godfrey, she was born May 20, 1849 in Flanagan, Ill. It was in Streator, March 22, 1889 that she was united in marriage with William Barnwell. They were the parents of six children, one, Mrs. Agnes Durham, of Streator, who preceded her mother in death 10 months ago. Besides her husband she leaves five children, Mrs. Mary Neblock, Mrs. Francis Stewart, and Mrs. Catherine Bryant of Streator, Mrs. Henrietta Russ, and Edward Barnwell of Ottawa. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Mary Ann Barnwell, and Mrs. Catherine Wright of Streator. 9042 | Mrs. Belle Alexander Ann Isabel Northcott, daughter of B.F. and Elizabeth Northcott born June 25, 1848, in Menard County, Ill., and died Monday, January 6, 1936 after an illness of only 24 hours, at her home in Browning. She was educated in the public schools then in Quincy College. She came with her parents to Missouri and was married march 1, 1866 to George G. Alexander. To this union were born nine children, five of whom have passed to the beyond: Lydia, David, Mattie Trowbridge, Fred and Herman Alexander. The husband also precedeed her in death. Those of the family left to mourn her departure are Ben W. Alexander, Purdin, Mo., Mrs. Lizzie Nickell, Sumner, Mo., Henry Alexander, Alva, Okla.; Mrs. Irene Garrett, Browning, and a sister, Mrs. Nellie Ormiston, Linneus. The funeral was Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the Southern Methodist church. The grandson acted as pall bearers. Burial was in the Jenkins Cemetery beside her late husband. The deceased joined the Methodist church early in life, but transferred her membership to the Presbyterian church. She was a woman of strong mentality, loyal to all fine ideals of Christian womanhood. She was a loyal wife, a devoted mother and true friend. She retained her mental faculties until she died. There are left eighteen grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. The pallbearers were grandsons, Wayne and Harvey Alexander, of Linneus, Kenneth and Carl Nickell of Sumner, Earl Trowbridge of Carrollton, George Alexander of Kirksville. The granddaughters carried the flowers. The music was furnished by a quartette, Ray Calhoun, Mrs. Lorene Whaley, Miss Loraine Glaze and James Williams, with Mrs. Glaze at the piano. She and her husband had left here Saturday morning on a vacation trip, had visited in San Antonio, and were en route to Mexico City, when she was stricken.
