The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant First Class John Maddox (ASN: 2273686), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 316th Engineers, 91st Division, A.E.F., at Audenarde, Belgium, 1 November 1918. Sergeant Maddox volunteered to accompany an officer and three other soldiers on a reconnaissance patrol of the city of Audenarde. Entering under heavy shell fire, the party reconnoitered the city for seven hours, while it was still being patrolled by the enemy, and advanced two kilometers in front of our outposts and beyond those of the enemy. Funeral services for John W. Maddox, 63, of Ojai, will be conducted tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the Sawtelle Veterans Administration facility, West Los Angeles. Mr. Maddox, a life member of the Army & Navy Legion of Valor and a veteran of both World wars, died Friday in the Sawtelle Veterans Administration Hospital after a long illness. He won the Distinguished Service Cross in action with the 91st Division near Audenarde, Belgium, on Nov.1, 1918. He leaves his widow Gladys and two daughters, Mrs. John G. Kincade of Berkeley and Mrs. James Brady of Santa Barbara. Burial will be in the VA Cemetery.
