Rices of Montgomery County
James Rice was born Nov. 30, 1750 in Virginia and his son, David, was also born in Virginia. Jan. 4, 1782. David's wife, Susannah, was born in North Carolina, June 7, 1782. James Rice bought his first piece of property in Montgomery County April 2, 1805, from John Moore of Madison County. It adjoined the Ben Davis property and consisted by 17 1/2/ acres. In September, 1811, David and Susannah bought 10 acres from James Lawridge and March, 1820, James bought 40 acres from James Fench on the waters of Spencer Creek.
James was an elderly man, sold his land to his son, David, in December 1828. They in turn sold it in November 1833, and moved to new Ghent, Ky. James died Sept. 4, 1854. Children were Mary Magdalene (married O'Neal), Elizabeth (married John Ringo), James Henry, Polly Ann (married Kern0, John Bunyan (Married Amelia Ann Hoggins), and Daivd Luther (married Elizabeth Johnston).

Will of David Rice
On the motion of John B. Rice and it appearing to the satisfaction of the court from the testimony of David Rice and John Rice of Gallatin county and D.G. Arvin, James Dinguid & W.B. Winslow of Carroll County that David Rice late of this county made and published his last will and testament in writing which was signed by him and published in the presence of said David Rice, John Rice, D.G. Owen, James Dinguid & W. B. Winslow who subscribed the same as attesting witnesses in the presence of said testor who was of sound mind which will bore date and was published between the ___ day of ___ and the ____ day of 1855, and that the substance of said last will and testament was that his land & estate should be sold, and the proceeds of sale equally divided between this three sons James Harvey Rice, John Bunyan Rice and David Luther Rice and the balance of his estate equally divided between his five living children towit Elizabeth Ringo, James Harvey Rice, Polly Ann Kern, John Bunyan Rice and David Luther Rice and that he wills to his grandson Davie Rice Oneal, son of his daughter Mary Magdaline Oneal decd, Five dollars amt of his estate and no more.
And that said last will and testament was placed by the testor in the hands of the witness David Rice for safe keeping and carelessly lost by him and never revoked by the testor, It is now ordered and adjudged by the Court that the same be admitted to probate as the last will and testament of said David Rice deceased.

This instrument in writing, purporting to be the substance of the last will and testament of David Rice decd was this day presented to the court for probate and being duly proven by the oaths of David Rice, John Rice, D.G. Owen, James Dinguid and W.B. Winslow subscribing witness to the original last will and testament of said David Rice decd the same was established by the court as and for the substance of the last will and testament of David David Rice decd and ordered to be recorded as such where upon the same and this certificate as duly recorded in my office.
