Notes - Former Woodford County Sheriff Herbert Guy Gilkison died in his home on Clifton Pike Sunday. He was 79. Mr. Gilkison served as Woodford County Chief Deputy Sheriff from 1974 to 1977 under Sheriff Arthur "Bear" Gregory. In 1977 he ran and was elected as the sheriff of the county. He served until 1981. Mr. Gilkison was a member of the National Sheriff's Association and the Kentucky Sheriff's Association. He was the widower of Margaret Gormley "Pogy" Gilkison. Before going into public service, Mr. Gilkison farmed in Woodford County for 32 years. He also helped organize the Blue Grass Horse Pulling Association in 1953, and was its first president. Mr. Gilkison owned pulling horses, and won more than 300 competitions with them - including three world championships. Services for Mr. Gilkison are 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Leo Catholic Church. Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass.
