- Mike Leslie Clayton, 58, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, passed away of Pancreatic Cancer on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 in Fayetteville.
He was born October 29, 1950 in Chadron, Nebraska, the son of Lyle Marion and Betty (Hedges).
He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving from 1969 to 1973, on the USS Kitty Hawk CV63, he had two tours in Viet Nam, received two Viet Nam Campaign Medals in 1970 & 1972, Presidents Unit Citation in 1970, 7th Fleet Unit Citation in 1972, VF-114 USS Kitty Hawk.
Mike married Lea Anne (Clinesmith) Sander in Chester, Oklahoma, on June 26, 1977 at his parent's home. He soon began his own businesses, first hay hauling, and then opened, Mikes Shamrock Service Station in Seiling, Oklahoma. Mike and his oldest brother Marc became business partners in 1980 – 81 and opened Woodward Tire and Auto in Woodward, Oklahoma, later they built an additional store in Seiling, Oklahoma called M&M Tire and Auto. In 1989 Mike and family settled in Fayetteville where he started and is still in operation today, the Fayetteville Tire and Auto. In 2005 they opened Clayton Tire and Auto in Springdale, where his son David is the store manager, son Brad is manager of the Fayetteville Store and his son Chad is the active part-owner of the business.
Mike was the most lovable man, he especially came to life around his grandchildren. He was a compassionate man. When he was aware of a need he felt compelled to do what he could. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and he will be missed by so many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister; Cathy Cline and his mother-in-law June (Perry) Clinesmith.
He is survived by his wife; Lea Anne (Clinesmith) Clayton of the home, three sons; Chad Michael Clayton and wife Jennifer of Greenland, Arkansas, Brad Marc Clayton and wife Johnna of Wesley, Arkansas, David Lee Sander and wife Teshia of Lowell, Arkansas, five grandchildren; Madison Sander, Taylor, Landry and Ty Clayton and Jaxson Nolen. Two brothers; Marc Clayton and wife Schatze of Chester, Oklahoma, Max Clayton and wife Ann of Frederick, Oklahoma and one sister; Connie Miller and husband Mack of Chester, Oklahoma. He is also survived my his in laws; father and mother-in-law; Leonard and Ru Ann Clinesmith of Checotah, Oklahoma, Mike Clinesmith and wife Debbie of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Ron Clinesmith and wife Bonnie of Chester, Oklahoma, Jo Lynn (Clinesmith) Wilson and husband Dale of Seiling Oklahoma, Arlan Clinesmith of Elk City, Oklahoma, and Lisa Clinesmith of Stillwater, Oklahoma, a honorary brother and wife, Ron and Pam Pitcher of Barstow, California, as well as many more family members and friends.
A funeral service will be 2:00 PM on Friday, February 27, 2009 at The First Church of the Nazarene in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with Pastor Larry Woodward officiating. Pallbearers will be Logan Slavens, Zack Williams, Levon Ogden, Mark Nuuja, Michael Jarboe and Phillip Sparks. Burial will be in Cedardale cemetery in Seiling, Oklahoma.
Visitation will be 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, February 24, 2009 in the chapel of Nelson-Berna Funeral Home, with the family present during visitation.
In lieu of flowers memorials maybe made to the Arkansas Children's Hospital, #1 Children's Way, Little Rock, Arkansas, 72202.
