- ELIZABETH TURLEY was born 30 September 1808 in Montgomery County, Kentucky, and died there 24 November 1895. On 15 December 1826 she married William W. Payne. He was born 16 March 1807 in Buckingham County, Virginia, the son of William Payne and his first wife whose maiden name was Whitehead. William W. Payne died 3 December 1886.
William W. Payne was listed in the 1850 census as living in Bath County, Kentucky. In i860, 1870 and 1880 he was listed in Montgomery County, Kentucky.
William W. Payne wrote his will on 11 July 1884 and it was proved in Montgomery County, Kentucky, on 20 December 1886. The following heirs were listed: his wife, Elizabeth Payne; the children (unnamed) of his deceased son, A. J. Payne; his ten living children, Elizabeth F. Thompson, wife of James H. Thompson; Amos Payne; Moses Payne; George W. Payne; Wm. T. Payne; Willis F. Payne; Lucy J. Thompson, wife of John A. Thompson; Martha C. White, wife of J. W. White; Ruth Payne; Louisa A. Buckles, wife of Samuel M. Buckles.
After his wife's legal dower was allowed, William W. Payne's will was that his estate be divided into eleven equal parts, to include the children of his deceased son, A. J. Payne. In addition a cash settlement of $500.00 was to be given to his daughter, Ruth Payne, "because of her afflicted condition."
In 1880 John Payne, age eleven, born Kentucky was listed in the census for William W. Payne as a step-son. His identity is not known. At the end of the list of births on William W. Payne's Bible record is the name Isaac A. Payne with no dates. He has not been identified. Under deaths on the Bible record are Eura Pavne, died 17 August 1855 and Marbel (?) Payne, died 4 April 1877. It has been suggested that these were sisters of William W. Payne, but this cannot be substantiated.
