      "Waveland Independent, July 2, 1898

Mrs. Mary Smith Jarvis daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Smith was born Feb 13, 1825 in Green County, Tennessee and was brought to Montgomery County, Indiana when 3 years old and has lived in this county with but little exception ever since.

For 32 years she has lived in Waveland. She was one of our pioneers and endured pioneer hardships.

Of a family of 13 she has 3 surviving sisters and two brothers.

She early felt the need of a Savior and was baptized by Rev. John Harris before she was 20.

On Dec 4, 1845 she married John Jarvis.

She was the mother of 9 children, 8 living; 32 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren.

She has known reverses in life, and in a struggle of 33 years for the maintenance of her family has proven herself a heroine. When adversity came she magnified her lord by faith in His name.

Although her portion in life seems to have been an especially hard one, yet she always looked forward to a brighter time.

She has now entered into that rest that remaineth for the people of God.

Let us tell the story of her unwavering faith, her patience and devotion to family to our children, for the name of such an one needs to be perpetuated.

She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sturgeon after one hour's illness, June 16, 1898."
