    • Runyan, Walter Scott
      Walter Scott Runyan was born April 12, 1925. He passed away July 26, 2015. He was born in Texhoma, Oklahoma and lived in the “Dust Bowl” area. He moved to Iowa. On June 26, 1948 he married Rosemary and was married 67 years. He graduated in 1951 from Iowa State University majoring in Industrial Education. In 1966 he received a Master’s Degree at Northern Colorado University. In 1969 he was given a summer Fellowship at Eastern Michigan University. He taught 15 years in Iowa and then 19 years for U-46 Elgin, IL. He retired in 1985 and worked 16 years at Ace Hardware in Elgin.
      He was active in First United Presbyterian Church in Elgin, serving as elder, deacon and usher. He and his wife served nine times at the church’s national conference center in New Mexico. He and son Kenneth served together once on a mission in Nicaragua. He and his wife were in 50 states and 14 countries. His favorite things were his family, reading, traveling, gardening and woodworking.
      He is survived by wife Rosemary, brother Donald (Bessie), sister Thelma (Steve) Young, son Kenneth (Luann), daughter Cynthia (Tom) Helgerson, son Mark *Leann Runyanwood), grandchildren James (Carrie) Helgerson, Lisa Helgerson, Andra Runyan, Kimbra Runyan and two great grandchildren Alison McVey and Ryan Holgerson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
      He served in the U.S. Army in Japan during the Occupation of Japan. He will receive a military honors service at a future date. Per his wishes, his body was given to science. A memorial service at First United Presbyterian Church in Elgin on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at 3:00 P.M. Visitation will be on Saturday from 1:00 P.M. until the time of the services.
