| 4503 | Laban Gritton Is Dead At Collison Had Long Been Resident of Vermilion County. Collison, Ill., March 29. - Laban Gritton, who has been a continuous resident of this county since 1856, died at the home of his son, William Gritton, near Collison, yesterday, after a short illness of pneumonia. The deceased was 80 years of age and removed to his county with his parents in the year 1840, settling on a farm six miles north of Danville. The old Gritton farm near Buck's Grove was purchased by the deceased from the government in 1856, the price being 25 cents per acre. Mr. Gritton is survived by seven children as follows: Charles Gritton, Covington, Ind.; Mrs. David Elder, 729 South street, Danville; William, near Collison; George at Buck's Grove; Romilla Grimes, Sullivan, Ind.; Mrs. Dora Dingler, Rossville, and Labon Gritton, Jr. The funeral will be held at the William Gritton residence, Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock and the burial will be in the Knight's Branch cemetery. | 4504 | Laban J. Gritten is consigned to grave Funeral for well known farmer held at country home Wednesday Laban J. Gritten died at the home of his son, William Gritten, three miles northwest of Collison, Monday, March 28, at 6 o'clock a.m. Mr. Gritten was born in the state of Kentucky, January 19, 1831. He lived 75 years, 2 months, and 9 days. He came to Illinois with his parents, who settled in Blount township, Vermilion county, and he has been a resident of this county ever since. Mr. Gritten, when but a young man, moved to Pilot township and located in the northwest corner of the township, near No. 5 school house, where he entered a tract of land at 25 cents per acre from the government, and resided there until 1907. Since that time he has made his home with his children. Mr. Gritten has been married three times and has lost three wives by death. He is the father of 19 children, all of whom are dead but eight. Those who survive him are: Charles Gritten, Covington, Ind., Mrs. Dora Dingler, Rossville, Ill., Mrs. Dollie Elder, Danville, William Gritten, near Collison, Mrs. Remelia Grimes, Carlisle, Ind., George Gritten, Penfield, Laban Gritten, Penfield, Mrs. Clara Meyers, Chicago. There were born into these various families 40 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren of whom 38 grandchildren and all the great grandchildren survive him. He is survived also by one sister, Mrs. Anna Watson, who is 76 years of age, and lives in Blount township. Up to the last moments of his life he was perfectly conscious and in talking to the children said he was prepared to go at any time. About 22 years ago last January he lost his left arm, which was buried on the home place. It was his request that it be taken up and buried with his body, which was accordingly done. The children were all present at his death except Mrs. Grimes, who was prevented by sickness from coming to his bedside. The funeral services were held at the home of William Gritten on Wednesday morning, and were conducted by the Rev. C.F. Gaumer of Alvin, assisted by the Rev. R.C. Lange, a retired farmer, died this morning in the Fremont hospital after a long illness. He was born May 15, 1892, in Danville, Ill., and farmed at Dodge most of his life. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Scribner. Lange married the former Nellie Queen Feb. 9, 1917. She died April 9, 1972. Survivors include daughters, Mrs. John V. (Marguerite) Pruitt of Fremont, Mrs. Evelyn Reimer of Omaha, Mrs. Thelma McCoy of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Louis F. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Meador and Son Chapel in Centralia with the Rev. Glenn Mitchell of Parkview Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in City of Centralia Cemetery. Visitation is after 2 p.m. today until time for services at Meador's, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 this evening. Mr. McBride, a retired farmer, was born Sept. 2, 1900, in Linton, Ind., to John Franklin and Sudie Gertha Howell McBride. He married Gladys Gritton Feb. 11, 1927, and she survives at the home. Mr. McBride worked on the A.S.C. committee and Farm and Home Administration and served on the FHA advisory board for many years. A member of Tulip Christian Church, he served on the church board. He was also a member of the Fox Hunters Association and received many trophies. Surviving with his wife are a son, Bobby Dale McBride of Centralia; two brothers, Frank McBride of Madison and Freddie McBride of Centralia; two sisters, Mrs. Jim Tom (Audra) Young of Hallsville and Mrs. Frank (Thelma) Luttrell of Centralia; and four grandchildren. | 4511 | Last Rites Saturday For Charles F. Gritton Charles Franklin Gritton, 65, died about 6:30 o'clock Thursday morning, September 29, at his home in the Tulip vicinity, north of Centralia. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charley (Bud) Gritton, he died on the farm where he was born. He had suffered from a heart ailment for some time. Mr. Gritton was a member of the executive board of the Monroe Association of Baptist churches and had served as moderator for 11 years. He was prominent in work at the Mt. Airy Baptist Church and as officer in the church at the time of his death. A past president of the Monroe County farm Bureau, he was an extensive and progressive farmer, breading Angus cattle for many years. Survivors include his wife, the former Miss Minnie Bondurant; two brothers, Earl Gritton of Centralia and T.F. Gritton of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three sisters, Mrs. Ernest Ball and Mrs. Larry McBride of Centralia and Mrs. Essie Alexander of Mexico. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lux Memorial Chapel, 1551 E. Grove Ave., Rantoul. The Rev. Deborah Owen and the Rev. Roger Jenks will officiate. Burial will be in Glenn Cemetery, Paxton. Mrs. Greet was born June 12, 1916, at Penfield, a daughter of Shelby and Maudie Ann Gritton. She married Euelle Edward Greer. He died in 1972. Survivors include a son, Lylburn "Lyle" A. Greet of Rantoul; and a sister, Violet Driscoll of Del Rio, Texas. Mrs. Greer graduated in 1937 from the University of Illinois, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree and did graduate work in music and music education. She had been an elementary, junior and senior high school teacher of music, English and languages. She taught school in Woodbine, Kan., Minnesota and Illinois public schools. She was a band director in Kansas and Minnesota. Mrs. Greer was a member of University Place Christian Church, Champaign, National Guild of Piano Teachers, International Society of Music Educators, Keyboard Teachers Association, Retired Teachers Association, International Platform Association, Rantoul Women's Club and American Association of University Women, Rantoul branch, since 1979 and president of the Rantoul branch twice. She was a life member of American Choral Directors Association. He leaves his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Frederick (Patricia) Zeisler of Livonia, Mich.; a son, Matthew Lawrence of Rochester; 8 grandchildren and 2 sisters, Mrs. Floyd (Ruth) Elliott and Mrs. Ronald (Helen) Anderson, both of Danville. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. Mr. Havard was a member and elder of the Presbyterian Church and served as Sunday School superintendent for many years. He was the organizer of the homer Alumni Association, charter member and past president of Homer Lions Club, former member of the Homer school board, member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and an honorary member of homer Volunteer Fire Department. He formerly served as a volunteer fireman. A veteran of World War II, he was a member of Homer Post 290, American Legion. She married Louis Wendell Cox Sr. on August 11, 1949 in Covington, IN, and he preceded her in death on October 9. 2003. Mrs. Cox was a longtime member of Pioneer Point Campers Club. She enjoyed puzzles and embroidering, and she loved her St. Louis Cardinals and her cat, Smokey. Lena was a mother to many. Lena was survived by one son; three daughters; seven grandchildren; one brother; and three sisters. | 4520 | LEXINGTON CLIPPER HERALD Posted: Friday, April 13, 2012 James Edmond Burt, 88, died April 9, 2012 at the Autumn House in Lincoln. A gathering of family and friends for James will be held at St. John's Catholic Church in Lincoln at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 23, 2012 followed by a private family burial service at 2:30 p.m. at St. Ann's cemetery in Lexington. He was born in Creighton, Jan. 4, 1924, to William and Martha Burt. After graduating from Creighton High School, he enlisted in the Marine Corps League in September 1942 during World War II. He was in the Third Marines stationed in Guadalcanal and Bougainville. Returning to the states, he was assigned to the 5th Marine Division and went to the Big Island of Hawaii. From there he went to Iwo Jima, he was wounded, lying on the beach, when he saw the first flag raised on Mount Suribachi. He went back to Hawaii and the States and was discharged, December 1945. His service awards include the Purple Heart, Asiatic Pacific Medal with three battle stars, American Campaign Medals and a National Defense Medal. He was active in the Veteran's of Foreign Wars, joining in 1944. Jim served as VFW Commander Post 1151, Commander District 3 and Nebraska State VFW Commander 1969-70. He married Norma Soucek of Verdigre and to this union three children were born: Thomas, Mary and Janelle. Jim worked as a salesman for Mormon Feed and many years as a rural mail carrier in Creighton. Jim married Betty Fagot of Lexington in 1978. He retired from the Rural Letter Carriers and went on to be the Dawson County Veteran's Service Officer in Lexington. After retiring in 1986, Jim and Betty traveled for a couple years before settling in Alamo, Texas. Jim enjoyed the outdoors; fishing, froggin, playing golf and playing cards. He loved his life in Texas and the happiness that his over 33 years of marriage to Betty brought. Nothing brightened his days more than spending time with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include daughters Mary (Tom) Upshaw of Norfolk and Janelle (Tim) Cox of Louisville; seven granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; stepdaughter, Diane Bockmann of Grand Island; stepson, Ron (Susan) Fagot of Lexington; stepdaughter, Janet (Jim) Martin of Lincoln; eight step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Norma Hope Burt of Wisconsin and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Jim in death were his spouse, Betty; his parents; son, Tom; brothers Bill, Robert and George; sister, Dorrine Johnson; half-sister. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln. His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dan Wissman officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in Atlanta Cemetery. Mr. Foster was a retired iron worker with Springfield Local 46. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947. He was born June 3, 1927, at Waynesville to Cecil and Fern Cole Foster. He married Doris Dengler on Jan. 31, 1948, in Atlanta. He is survived by his wife, of Lincoln; two sons, Jack (and Debbie) Foster of Elkhart and Jeff Foster of Lincoln; one daughter, Jill (and Rodney) Alberts of Lincoln; four grandchildren, Amy, Jody, Heather and Jerad; two great-grandchildren; Aislynn and Jordy; and one great-great-grandchild, Niya. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 263 and Eagles Lodge 2708. Linda was born in Rensselaer, Indiana, October 7, 1937, the daughter of the late Vaughn and Irene (Gifford) Green. On July 28, 1956, in Gifford, Linda married Forrest E. Campbell, who survives. Linda attended the Wheatfield Schools, St. Joseph College and Purdue University. She was retired from the Rensselaer School Corporation where she had been a teacher for 23 years. Linda was a member of the Gifford Church of God. Among her joys were reading good books, playing bridge, watching movies, being among children, traveling and social activities. Linda is survived by her husband, Forrest; three children, Melanie (Klayton), Susan (Jim) and Mark (Stacey); grandchildren, Rhiannon, Caylyn, Cameron, Ali, Halston and McClain; great grandchildren, Makennah, Makayh, Makoi; brother, Gary (Bev), sister, Emily (Charles).
